Jarrod Sammut Contract Situation

PENRITH have signed promising utility Jarrod Sammut to a new deal that will keep him at the NRL club until 2010.

Sammut, 21, extended his current contact by a further two years despite reported interest from rival NRL club New Zealand Warriors.

"It's a great signing for the club," Panthers general manager Michael Leary said today.
"We're always talking about a pathway to the NRL for local juniors - and this is yet another example of that.

"Jarrod will be a great utility player for us."

Sammut broke into the Panthers' first grade side late last year and impressed in place of injured fullback Rhys Wesser.

He is locked in a battle with new recruit Joe Williams for the Panthers' halfback spot made vacant by Craig Gower's departure, and said he saw his future at the club in the halves.

"I'd like to see myself playing somewhere in the halves, whether it be six or seven, but I think just anywhere at the moment - to be on the park is a good feeling," Sammut said.

Sammut was reportedly being targeted by the Warriors as a replacement for their fullback Wade McKinnon who suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.
But he said he always wanted to remain with his junior club.

"I did want to stay at Penrith - I just feel comfortable here with all the facilities and the people and just growing up in the local juniors," Sammut said.

"I couldn't really see myself going anywhere."

The contract means nothing. If we continue to treat him like sh*t, he will ask for a release. Given we don't care about him, we will grant his release.

Some other club will come out of the deal with a great little 5/8 and we're stuck with no real halves and a dickhead coach.

I heard on abc radio last week that he may be going to the tigers next year.

Tigers have Benji Marshall, they've also signed up Josh Lewis... and are still keen on Jarrod Sammut. Aside from Sammut, the Panthers have Wade Graham and no one else.

Yet our f*ckwit coach won't select him.

I hope that we lose the remainder of our games, and Matt Elliott gets fired.

I'd rather us finish in 12th or 13th, resulting in him getting fired then i would for us to scrape into the top 8.

Do you really think that Sammut would make that much of a different to our side?

I think that our team would look a lot better and be a lot more dangerous in attack with:
6. Jarrod Sammut
7. Wade Graham

Luke Lewis cripples our backline. He is a great player, and should be in the team for sure. But not at halfback. If we use a proper halves pairing, our backline will be much more effective. It also gives us someone to win those golden points games.

Luke Lewis to lock, and Nathan Smith to Windsor would make the team perfect. Although i've given up on Matt Elliott dropping Nathan Smith. He picks his favourite players, not the best 17 players.

I agree, scrape into the 8 and the apologists will tell us to look out for next season.

Miss it and the knives will rightfully come out.

I recently spoke to two people in the know at Penrith - re Jarrod Sammutt. (on different occasions)
They answered the same. "He is a know it all and won't listen".
One coached him in his junior days, the other is close to the Club NOW.
They both acknowledged that the kid is an amazing talent.
If he is not getting a run in first grade it is to do with HIS attitude and not his ability..
Shame because I love watching players of his skills and talents go around...

I agree.

If we scrape into the 8, top management will come out and say what a brilliant job Elliott did taking a side with so many injuries into the 8, and they'll reward the bastard with a 4 year extension.

I would rather miss out and get rid of Elliott and his bum boy Adamson.
.
And start afresh in 2009 with a new coach. Oh hell I can dream can't I ?

The fact is uness things completely fall apart we'll finish off better than last year and that'll keep him a job for 2009 and put him in the perfect position to have his contract renewed.

If it means another season without playing finals footy, it's a sacrifice I too am willing to sit through it means Elliott gets the punt at year's end.

The Panthers just simply can not keep going with him as coach.

Unfortunately, you are probably right. The only way is up after finishing wooden spooners, after all.
