I dont wanna blame the refs cos we have plenty of issues

What i dont get is how, in a season where teams are generally giving away about 10 penalties a game and even up to 19 penalties in one game, our opponents only give away 3 in a whole game (one of which i reckon was dodgy)... and were perfect for 50 minutes last week

The tigers gave away a f**kload of penalties against melbourne ... so they are not a team against pushing the limits to win ... yet only 3 today

I get every game is different, but it is quite extreme

This for mine comes back to our decade old achilles heel - our inability to win the play the ball area, which goes "nuclear" when possession runs against us.

Because we primarily play one out with our forwards, our opponents have plenty of opportunity to get numbers around our runner, wrestle them in the tackle, get them to the ground and slow our play the ball down. As a result, the rest of the defence gets time to get back onside and get set. Then when we play the ball slowly and do another one out run, the exact same thing occurs. As a result of the above, our opponents have no need to get offside before they move up and can still move up and control our forwards. We've hardly ever had a quick play the ball going in over a decade. Last year, we found a way to counteract this with some uncharacteristic quicker play the balls, by incorrectly playing the ball...something that is now completely outlawed in the game.

On the other side of the coin, again for over a decade, we've been hopeless at controlling our opponents in the play the ball area and they've gotten quick play the balls early in a set of six, meaning that our defence doesn't have time to get back and reset and go again. Our inability to slow the play the ball and giving away penalties goes nuclear when our opponents gets all the possession. We've come up with a tactic to counteract this, by playing a high intensity and aggressive defence moving up very quickly early in the tackle count. We used this tactic last year to bring us our great success...I'd suggest that we were probably offside in using this tactic by playing this way, but last year the refs probably didn't penalise this area as much.

I think this current interpretation of the defensive line has really f**ked us over the last couple of weeks and we have zero idea at present on how to adapt. If the refs stop policing this and we continue to use it, then we will go back to getting some success from it. If the refs continue to penalise this part of the game, then we need to adapt and find another way to get in the contest.

Bellamy claimed we were awesome at slowing the ruck last year

Did we lose a wrestling coach?

How this for a stat for our oppositions penalties
Panthers other 3 games penalties against: 9, 12, 13.Average 11.3. Against us:8
Manly other 3 games penalties against: 11, 4, 11. Average 8.7. Against us:10
Sharks other 3 games penalties against: 10, 12, 14. Average 12. Against us:6
Tigers other 3 games penalties against: 6, 18, 7. Average 10.3. Against us:3

So with the exception on Manly, which is surprising given we never had the ball to get any penalties, all other teams are magically well disciplined against us

look it's not just penalties

today there were other examples like the ref ruling that the Tigers didn't knock on near their goal line. they ended up scoring down the other end in the next set

the bullshit try that was awarded when it hit the in goal corner post and sideline

the Tigers getting a 7 tackle set despite the player leaving the field of play to catch it

the strip they weren't penalised for which ended up in a try being scored by them

they knock on near our goal line and get a penalty for it?

I do agree that we can't seem to buy a penalty this year, but I also think we don't put any pressure on the opposition with our attack, so the opposition is not forced to bend the rules to keep up with us.

and Arthur never says a word in the pressers so the crooks know they can get away with it and have a punt if they want

we had 4 games last year where we went a whole half without a penalty

pretty sure the only other game this happened in was Origin III when NSW went a half without a penalty

we're already up to 1 game this year

Last year, we found a way to counteract this with some uncharacteristic quicker play the balls, by incorrectly playing the ball...something that is now completely outlawed in the game.
Every team was playing the ball incorrectly last year FFS. We got our quick play-the-balls because we were able to wrong foot defenders with our footwork and passing. Not playing the ball with our foot didn't magically turn a slow play-the-ball into a quick one. It just reduced errors at dummy half.
On the other side of the coin, again for over a decade, we've been hopeless at controlling our opponents in the play the ball area and they've gotten quick play the balls early in a set of six, meaning that our defence doesn't have time to get back and reset and go again. I reckon this is correct, but at the same time, the opposition were also getting up quickly out wide to nullify our edge attack last year. This year the only teams penalised for that were Manly and the Sharks after they knew we wouldn't take the kick at goal.

As we saw today, there is space out wide. But we need to give the ball to our back rowers more often and build from there rather than always going out the back to our lightweight fullback(s) when nothing's on.

I think this current interpretation of the defensive line has really f**ked us over the last couple of weeks and we have zero idea at present on how to adapt. I think it's just players too keen to be aggressive in defence and taking shortcuts. Get all the way back with the ref, keep the line straight and slide. We have hard workers in the middle so help is on its way. I guess it's hard to break the aggressive mentality of the past two years.

I didnt say other teams werent playing the ball quickly as well. Every team bar us was playing the ball incorrectly all season. We only decided to do it after the Origin series. So in essence we only caught up to the other teams.

So if we got quick play the balls from wrong footing defenders with footwork and passing, why have we stopped doing it? Because we're now back to the slowest play the balls in the comp.

Why would we desist with a tactic that worked when we're continuing with other tactics that worked, even though that tactic is being penalised. Are they giving away penalties for footwork and passing?

Where do you get this bullshit from? No player ever played it with his foot except for the fortnight after a crackdown.

Because we've been fatigued from too much defending and thus had no support runners drawing defenders away.

Yeah we're tired and our ruck is slow. What a coincidence.
