Sounds like he handed himself in to avoid news crews seeing him arrested and led into a station, obviously got word from his lawyer he would be charged

Whatever is happening, I hope that Hayne's welfare is also taken into consideration.
Not giving him bail would be ludicrous, if indeed he has been charged.
He's hardly a threat to the community.

He does not have assist with their enquiry and it is up to them to decide if they have enough evidence to charge and make it stick.

If found guilty, cooperation (or lack their of) will be taken into account when sentencing.

If someone gets arrested I think the police have like 4 hours to charge them or release them.

EDIT: actually can be detained for 6 hours.

After arrest in NSW a person can be detained for a six-hour investigative period. This period can be lengthened by a warrant from the court for a further six hours.

After the investigative period is up, the person must either be:
