Jarryd Hayne - Make him an Eel for Life

If Parramatta want to move up the ladder they should let Hayne go.

The trouble with having one absolute out and out megastar player (which he no doubt is) is that you must pay them half your salary cap, and thus surround them with deadbeats. This is exactly how Newcastle ran stone last in 2005, when the great Andrew Johns was injured for half the season.

I'm inclined to agree with this. It's no coincidence that the two years Hayne missed a combined 21 games we won two spoons.

yeah it is a coincidence we happened to have deadshit clueless coaches those years too

Stuart won a premiership at the Roosters and Origin with the Blues, and Kearney won a World Cup with the Kiwis.

So now you make the point about Gould and Bennett 'holding their hands' which just proves their assistants weren't good enough at Parra.

But more likely was our poor form was caused by Hayne's injury (plus other key leadership figures) as well as off-field distractions caused by constant boardroom backstabbing.

Great argument as usual. At least you're good for reporting the news.

I don't need to put up an argument, when the bullshit meter is going off.

Hayne may be able to make it on to an NFL roster, but there's no way he'd be a starter.
He'd probably end up a third-stringer and there's no way he'd be happy with that.

Fifty years ago you could have a team with five or six Jarryd Hayne's. It was called St George. While fondly remembered by that club's supporters, I am convinced this was a period of total stagnation for the game of Rugby League in this country.

It's also possible to win Premierships with a star player or two in the team.

Roosters 2013 had Williams and Jennings, not to mention Pearce who would be taking up a pretty big chunk of cap.

Storm 2012....Smith, Slater, Cronk.

Manly 2011, Jamie Lyon, Brett Stewart, Anthony Watmough, Glenn Stewart...there were lucky to have DCE on a small deal at the time though.

FMD, when given the choice of having Hayne or JT in my side taking up a chunk of cap OR a team like Newcastle with a motley crew of good but not great players - I know what I would choose.

Substitute Penrith for Newcastle above.

Having said that, the Panthers offered Thurston the lot, including the Leagues Club, the Nepean River and the Blue Mountains. I didn't agree with it though.

what the panthers are doing this year however is the exception not the norm
name the last club to win a premiership without a superstar or two? the dragons in '10 i guess...and before that?

The Panthers have the right team for winning minor premierships but finals footy is a different beast. Our finals chokes pre-2006 were due to lack of a superstar, even while our consistent regular season form was no doubt aided by lack of reliance on one player.

The Dragons in 2010 had a lucky run through the finals, playing Manly minus the Stewart brothers and Matai, a narrow win over the Tigers and then faced the defending wooden spooners in the grand final (and coached by Brian Smith of all people).

In the '09 and '11 finals they went out in straight sets both years. So during the three years Bennett was there they made the finals every time but only won three out of seven matches.

Is he really a superstar? He has only ever been at clubs with strong squads. He certainly deserves some credit for maintaining a consistently strong squad in Brisbane but at Newcastle he is on track to only make the finals once in three years. The Knights made the finals twice in the three years before he got there so he hasn't made any short term improvements.

That said, the Knights are finally doing well in the NYC which is certainly down to Bennett's influence. This will be their first finals appearance since Bennett got there (and only their second finals appearance since the competition's inception in 2008). With the best junior talent poached by the top clubs the minute these kids turn 18 it is impossible to rebuild an 'academy' overnight.
