Don't be silly Avenger, we all know the NRL will only help the Bulldogs and Roosters sign marquee players.

This is a pretty cool story.
When I first started training down at the gym at the Parramatta Eels in 2005, out at Parra Stadium, the trainers there at the time asked me to take a young fella up on the top field after both of our training was over and test his mettle out!!!??
This young, new fella was none other than Jarryd Hayne, who had been signed to Parra. We were wrestling n I was smaller yet obvs more experienced and was slamming the champ around pretty hard, and was giving him a decent going over, although I had to work hard and it wasn't all one way traffic. To his credit, the lad never complained once, and never gave in, and did his best to tear my head off. It would've been pretty daunting for a young fella, although it was training and I was not trying to hurt him and pulled up at stages,he showed true mettle and mongrel. Hahahaha I won't be trying that again hyntrain, I may just get tied in a knot by you!!!
Massive congrats to my man Jarryd Hayne, aswell as the jet Johnathan Thurston for both winning the Dally M last night.
U da man Haynetrain, so stoked for you legend. I remember fondly that first night up on the top field n you have achieved sooooo much, lit the game up on so many occasions , left us all with brilliant memories, you are a legend of your game, your family must be so proud, and the whole time you have remained the humble champion I first met 9 years ago.
Biggups to JT aswell, your a superstar of the game aswell, you both will be remembered for your incredible mark you left on the great game of Rugby League.
Peace

News Ltd are running a story that Inglis has pipped Hayne for the FB Test gig.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...an-fullback-role/story-fni3gki8-1227075659312

It then goes on to say that Inglis should be FB, in the opinion of QLD selector Des Morris.

I'd pick hayne every day of the week at fullback but what it will come down to is which left and right centres are available. If there is a strong left centre available other than inglis they will pick inglis at fullback. And vice versa.

Will the selectors not be responsible for picking some sort of squad (with Sheens) and then Sheens will decide what positions they will all play? I'm guessing we will be giving a few of the fringe players a run against Samoa.

On NRL360 last night Jazz was asked about the 5 years of indifferent form (between Dally Ms). His response was that changing coaches throughout that period didn't help and it disrupted the club.

The sacking of DA, appointment of SK, then RS really was a dark period for our club IMHO. :(

He then spoke glowingly about BA and how he created a cohesive unit and with the players around him playing to their potential, he is allowed to do what he does best.

The Osborne and Spagnolo show was plain awful. Especially Osborne who was way over his head. At least Spags fixed up the Leagues Club.

Totally agree - however I would contend the dark days started with the axing of Smith a year before the end of his contract. I'm not suggesting Smith should have been retained, however it started a ridiculous cycle.
We appointed a 'win now or else' coach in Hagan, and he went about stuffing the junior pathways systems.
Finally flicked him, and brought in DA (a 'win now or else' coach), all looked rosy again. But a new board wanted a new man (fair enough) - sadly the new board had the anti-midas touch. Seems like everything they did turned to crap.

Here is hoping we are out of almost 10 years of turmoil. And here is also hoping that BA is a good coach - it doesn't take much to be better than Ricky and SK, but what will BA do for us defensively this off-season? That is the proving point for him for next year IMO. If we defend well, it reflects very favourably on him.

We didn't flick Smith early. We just didn't offer an extension so he walked mid season. Anderson's the one who demanded an extension or else he wouldn't be able to complete the final year of his contract. Kearney's the only one who conducted himself with any dignity.

On the 360 interview with hayne, he mentioned briefly our defensive issues and he and Arthur have recently spoken about our defensive stats.

Arthur also said on his last interview on the eels site recently that we were not physical enough this year and that would be the focus of our offseason. Arthur is clearly already working on how to fix our defence.

Taylor should have been appointed instead of hagan. Or a proper application process for the coaching position rather then just appointing Hagan ( I am assuming there was committee for the new coach which Denis was the only member)

I would go even further and say that the demise of the Parramatta Club actually commenced with the loss at the 2001 Grand Final against Newcastle. This one-off debacle set in trail a number of in some cases un-related events that culminated in where the Club got to at the end of last season.

From the unexpected loss in 2001, coupled with failures to reach the Grand Final in previous years to 2001, I think the coach (Brian Smith) began to possibly question and second guess himself that he could actually win the NRL premiership at Parramatta. This lead to a gradual and slow deterioration of his relationships between some players, coaching staff and club management, which included along the way the departure of Crusher Cleal as head of recruitment at the Club. It was this somewhat innocuous decision of Crusher returning to Manly around 2003 or 2004 that lead to the Club taking it's eye of the ball in regard to the identification, recruitment, development and retention of youth players from outside the Parramatta district league for probably the next 5 or so years.

With no grand final appearances and premierships in subsequent years to 2001, the board and Fitzy felt pressured to re-act and sacked Brian Smith. After this, what oldmancraigy has outlined above was the snowballing effect that resulted and essentially almost a wasted decade!

Hopefully the Club has learnt and we can now have stability once again. Peter Nolan certainly seemed to be a good find for the Club. Hopefully Peter Sharp and the others involved in recruitment can be even better.

Unstoppable force

Jarryd Hayne is like a hot knife through butter for NRL defences. Once the joint Dally M Medal winner gets going it seems there is no stopping him, topping eight of the lists for attacking play.

The Hayne Plane in full flight made the most line breaks (26), the most line breaks from inside his own half (11) the most 30+ metre runs (15), the most 50m+ runs and the most 180m+ running metres (9).

On top of all that, the slippery Eel tops the list for five or more tackle busts in a match (16), the most tackle busts in the opposition 20 (43).

And he liked to get involved in everything else, topping the list for the most involvements in line breaks with 52 — ahead of Johnathan Thurston (50) and Broncos fullback Ben Hunt (44).

The only list he didn’t top was most unassisted line breaks — with Hunt getting 18 to Hayne’s 11. Hunt also came second in total line breaks (23). That’s a big signal for what we can expect from the Brisbane man next season under Wayne Bennett.

180+ metre runs? So he runs 100 metres, runs back 40 then runs another 40 to the tryline?

it made me look twice too - and have a chuckle .... jarryd is so good, he just runs round in circles giving the opposition a chance to catch him
