On Norman ( or any one else for that matter ) and his supposed salary, if it is true that his contract is back ended, then it's a bit of a stretch to say he's on overs based upon his salary in the final year of his contract alone. One must really take into account the previous years salary on lesser amounts, not simply quote this years payment as if that is what he;s been paid for the length of his contract.
Comparing say paying Norman 900k this season to the likes of a Cronk or JT at 1.1m looks a no brainer, but when you take into account a three year contract at say 600, 750 and 900k, and compare to three years at 1.1 / year, on 2016 form it doesn't look nearly as bad.
Mennings is another, same story, fat and overpaid for 2019 ( based on 2018 form ) if what we are hearing is true, but good value in 2016/17 when performing and on a lesser amount. When Moses came across end of last year, I wouldn't have swapped Mennings for any other centre in the comp based upon his defence alone.
I'm not a great fan of the idea of back ending as it seems to me it's often a case of deferring an ever increasing risk, greater payments further into the future mean you are paying more for a less certain outcome, but in the end that seems to be how clubs create a premiership window within the current salary cap regime, knowing it's likely to f**k them over at some point, we just seem to have done it less effectively than others. Which given our recent(ish) management history, is no great surprise.
