Maybe they're all talking him up because Jarryd pledged to donate more cash to Hill$ong for every time he makes the papers here while he's overseas?

I know you are probably not being serious, but how many readers of the paper from the general public do you think make an immediate association between Jarryd Hayne and Hillsong?

Possibly none (yet), but that wasn't the real point.

The suggestion was a joking explanation for the plethora of articles about an absent Hayne quoting his nuffie congregation mates. It seems a very Hill$ong thing to do to pedge some fruits of your "success" back to the church, and what better way (before you even land a financial contract) than to agree your success be measured on the basis of your press coverage, and start your giving to the looooooord accordingly?

Do you honestly believe that the papers pay any athlete for an interview???

AND: Hayne will get paid less to play NFL than NRL

AND: did you ever consider, maybe he fled to stop Hillsong sneaking his ca$h?

I watched Draft Day last night. Did not realise how big that event is. I'm assuming Hayne will join that draft or is he too old?

The article in today's Telegraph regarding Hayne finally saying goodbye to his team mates. Interesting that he is wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers cap....

Maybe he's just one of those tools who supports the Cavs now that LeBron is back.
Didn't see too many Cleveland caps around last year. Plenty now though.

As I understand it, he has to enter a draft before he can play for anyone. He may be able to join a practice squad without going through the draft but the basic principle is that everyone who plays in the NFL should have nominated for a draft. If they don't get picked in the draft, then they are unrestricted free agent. Similarly, if they get picked, then the team cuts the player, they become an unrestricted free agent.

chances are he is a fan of, or trying to glom on to, one of the top athletes on the planet in lebron james. wouldn't be surprised if he had a miami heat cap before the last nba finals series started.

yeah my understanding is that you need to nominate for the draft before coming into the league to give all the crap teams a chance. from memory they have the main draft then a supplementary draft held later which hayne may go into because he may have special circumstances.

freaky that the nfl draft weekend has national interest like an actual sporting event decider. if you look at footage of nfl/nba drafts 30 years ago where they were held in little halls/conference rooms compared to now it's you realise and appreciate what a huge event it actually is.

i would very much like to see a draft brought back into league for the top tier competition. i get that terry hill challenged it and won around 25 years ago but it should be a condition of playing top level nrl. if people don't like it they can always go play in another lesser league. i'd also like to see the national body run and fund all comps below nrl level. it's stupid that some clubs pay more than otehrs to develop talent but other clubs benefit from that hard work.

So basketball is his go now?

LeBron dogged the Cavs after they built a team around him and took off to Miami to win a comp.... He returned "home" when the money was right.

Hayne was the closest thing to a LeBron in the NRL, he had a team built around him too. He "has achieved everything he can in the NRL"...... Maybe if the money is right he will come back as well.

In this case I think the cap might fit. Doesn't surprise me that he would be a LeBron fan....

I saw a discussion on the NFL subreddit (/r/nfl) regarding Hayne's free agency (or potentially lack thereof) and I think it was eventually agreed that because he had passed the ~3 year (?) post-graduation grace period from senior education he was not required to enter the draft.

Hmmm, well that's a new one on me (doesn't mean it's wrong). I know that there is a rule that says that someone who finishes senior high school, and does not go to college has to wait for 3 (or 4?) years until they are eligible to enter a draft (and thereby be eligible to play in the NFL).

Ahh, I see. What they're saying is that Jarryd (like about 200 million individuals) was technically eligible to be drafted in the NFL draft that occurred 4 years after he left High School in Australia, because apparently everyone in the world who is 4 years post-HS (and doesn't then attend a US College) is automatically eligible to be selected in that draft. Seems weird, but plausible.
