Reggie bush > 49ers

Not the worst pick up after losing Gore.
Don't know if he would be cheaper though.

Percy harvin > bills

Very good pick up. Bills building a very nice squad. Only problem seems to be at QB.
Harvin has been a bit of a merkin for some clubs to deal with though. Wonder how the Bills will handle him.

Doesn't he play the same position as Hayne is trying out for?

Yes.
He was the one who came to Australia and befriended Hayne, and told him he would do well in the NFL. Hayne was originally going to go to his old team Detroit, but now it seems they are going to be in the same team anyway.

Yeh, the Tele are pushing that line. It really doesn't matter, Hayne is so far from being a starting running back that it really makes f**k all difference to what Hayne will do this year. e.g. not much or special teams + 3rd down back etc.

My opinion is that if Hayne EVER gets on the 53 man squad, his debut will be on special teams and he will be punt/kick return as that is where he would be best suited straight up and is most similar to what he could do on an NRL field.

My team have an exclusive punt/kick returner in Cribbs so it is not unheard of in carrying one exclusively on game day.

How many opportunities do these punt returners usually get in a game? IE I'd assume after every touchdown? So after he returns one Do they come off?

They get any kick off to start a half and after the opposition scores. They also get to return each time they hold the opposition to a punt.

So you could easily get 5 to 10 returns a game depending on the scoring/your defence.

They go straight off once their return is complete.

Absolutely, but the punt/kick returners all have a nominal position on the offense/defense (e.g. 6th corner back / WR etc) that they can actually play if injuries dictate. Carrying a specialist unproven returner ain't likely to happen.

I guess it depends on whether the coach has faith in him or not. You are 100% correct that is very unlikely but if he is going to get a chance, it has to be somewhere.

Special teams r extremely valuable as they have many times turned a match. Niners haven't recruited there yet so I think Hayne might find his place there. Looks the miners offence will be dramatically changing this year as bush is more a receiver nowadays. Until the bills get a qb, it's like Ron at an orgy, just making up the numbers

Thanks for the explanation guys. If he is a punt returner he basically then plays for 10 minutes a game. So he left the greatest visual sport on earth which he was the best at to play 10 minutes every week? I shake my head.

Playing in front of 60k+ each week, paid millions and in the biggest sport in North America. That's not a bad thing to chase imo.

What were you thinking he would be doing? Playing 80 mins a week?

Even most QB's are only on the field for 30 minutes of actual game time each week...

We still have Ellington and Hyde who we used in the returning role last season, but I would assume with Gore gone they won't put Hyde there again, and I don't think Ellington was all that great at it so hopefully we get someone better.

10 minutes!
If he was playing as a kick returner and nothing else, he'd be lucky to see 2 minutes of actual gameplay.

Two minutes?!? The ball is only in play for about 17 minutes of a four hour match.

If he does a really good kick return, swerves around some blockers and tacklers and runs the length of the field to the end zome that could take up 20 seconds.

Then he can do it again 5 more times. :D

Well say he gets all the punt returns, he would average 5-6 a game.
From the time he gets the ball and runs it would be around 7 seconds.
So your looking at about 35 seconds of game time.

Im not sure a team will carry a guy in squad that only does a punt return.Usually punt returners are shared between runnings backs-Wide receivers or someone on special teams. They might be a specialty punt returner who is also 2-3 choice for running back for example. So they still get more game time in other areas.
