3 year deal ?

I thought it was a futures contract.

They must be confident he can make it as he'll be 30 when it expires.

I know that NFL contracts can be terminated at any time, but wow a three year deal. This is a link on the 49ers own site confirming the deal

http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2...th-49ers/fe2ff155-d3a5-4468-a4d6-fe6c76ac4ce9

The San Francisco 49ers announced Tuesday they have signed undrafted free agent Jarryd Hayne to a three-year deal.
Hayne (6-2, 220) has spent the past nine years (2006-14) in the National Rugby League (NRL) with the Parramatta Eels. In 2014, Hayne won numerous Dally M Awards, which are given to the best and fairest player over the entire National Rugby League regular season, as he was named the Player of the Year, Best Fullback, Top Tryscorer and Representative Player. Hayne previously won the Dally M Player of the Year and Best Fullback Awards in 2009, the Best Winger Award in 2007, and the Best Rookie Award in 2006. He also represented Fiji in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup and Australia in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
A 27-year-old native of Minto, a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales Australia, Hayne comes from an athletic family as his father, Manoa Thompson, is a former professional rugby league player who represented Fiji on the national rugby team.

But the fact that it is a 3 year deal is all in favour of the club. They have the option to terminate, the player doesn't. Theoretically, they can stop him playing elsewhere for that time period (if they include him on the relevant rosters).

So why would Hayne sign a 3 year deal all in the club's favour? Presumably the other clubs were offering the standard contract, so why tie yourself down?

Well, I *think* he said it was about the fact that SF were prepared to guarantee a decent amount (i.e. the 100k) , whereas the others weren't. In reality they are unlikely to hold him for 3 years if they have no intention of using him, as there are limited spots on the various rosters.

Ah, OK. I'd forgotten the guaranteed bit. So a standard futures contract can be as little as a week or something, and a few grand?

And just now I came across this: http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/03/04/san-francisco-49ers-announce-jarryd-hayne-three-year-contract/

Hayne’s management explained to The Roar that the deal is not a traditional three-year commitment to the franchise, in the sense of an NRL or AFL contract that is signed by the player.
Every unrestricted free agent has to sign a three-year deal, if it’s not a futures contract. Hayne is on a rookie deal, and will be training for the next 15 to 20 weeks with the 49ers. The three-year element of the contract is standard for all players in Hayne’s position, and he is free to leave the 49ers for another club without breaking his contract.
The situation is still completely in Hayne’s hands – with a deal with the 49ers squad on the table if he impresses in the coming months.

Was driving back from San Diego today and they mentioned Hayne in a news bulletin.

So weird to hear any reference to Australians while in the US.

It's also been on the NFL website and NFL Network's Daniel Jeramiah (former scout for Ravens and Eagles) gave him a wrap on Twitter for being a PR/KR based on his highlights.

Also on Hayne's comments about the Storm, in 2013 on Twitter Hayne tweeted something about the Storm losing to which I said something along the lines of the cheating scum deserving it cheating us etc. and Hayne actually responded to it with "lol" and he copped a lot of shit about it from his followers (Melbourne supporters, female mostly). It was quite amusing. Anyways I knew back then that he thought they were scum........nice to see that he has spoken up and let those merkins know they cheated us out of a premiership!
