Day 9 of San Francisco 49ers training camp was the most physical to date. Sunday's session featured a live goal-line period in which both sides of the ball made impact plays.

MVP
Jim Tomsula.

Normally a player gets the love in this section, but we're going to highlight the head coach for giving us all something unique to write about in the final 10-plus minutes of practice. After a back-and-forth two-hour portion of practice, Tomsula allowed his players to go through a live, full-contact goal-line period.

The top plays included Jarryd Hayne breaking a few tacklers and plunging into the end zone from 1-yard out, Kendall Gaskins out-running a defender along the right perimeter of the field for a 1-yard score, and Kaepernick perfectly executing a play-action fake to find tight end Vance McDonald for a 1-yard touchdown pass.

Extra points
- Hayne got work on the kick-off coverage units.

Quote to Note

"With a nickname like 'Tank,' you'd think there would be a lot of those."
- 49ers defensive coordinator Eric Mangini on Carradine's goal-line hit against Hayne.

Practice No. 8 recap: Jarryd Hayne highlights goal-line drill; Reggie Bush catching on; DeAndrew White shines again

Posted on August 9, 2015 by Cam Inman
Australian rookie Jarryd Hayne bulled through five would-be tacklers to reach the end zone Sunday and highlight the hardest-hitting drill of training camp.
“That one was pretty rugby-esque, kind of lateral and bumping off people,” left tackle Joe Staley said of Hayne, who left behind rugby-league stardom in Australia for an attempted NFL career.
What made Hayne’s touchdown run even more impressive was that he was alive to do so. Hayne got leveled by Tank Carradine on an earlier run from the 2-yard line, with Shayne Skov also wrapping up Hayne’s ankles.
Outside linebacker Eli Harold thought he was going to be the one to drill Hayne first.
“I came free, was one-on-one with Jarryd Hayne. He put a move on me. It could have been a big hit, but I didn’t drop my hips and stayed low.
“But Tank nailed him and made up for my mistake. That’s my favorite play.”
Carradine’s collision with Hayne was a loud one.
“With a nickname like Tank, you’d think all those would be loud,” quipped defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.
Hayne, playing in shoulder pads for only the fourth time, overcame his first true tackle minutes later.
Following Trey Millard’s lead block, Hayne drifted toward the right side of the end zone and initially slipped out of Skayne Skov’s would-be tackles. Hayne then weaved past Marcus Rush and L.J. McCray. Still a couple yards from the goal line, Hayne’s rugby-league skills kicked in and surged past two more defenders, Steve Beauharnais and Arik Armstead.
The 49ers closed practice two plays later, on runs by Kendall Gaskins that did not produce touchdowns.
Of the 12 snaps in that goal-line drill, only three touchdowns were scored: runs by Hayne and Gaskins, and a Colin Kaepernick pass to Vance McDonald.

Good day for Hayne, showed he can take a hit and backs it up with a TD.

McGaughey wants to see more, specifically how Hayne copes with getting blasted unexpectedly.
“I want to see him get hit in the face. I want to see him get blindsided,” McGaughey said. “I want to see those different things and how he reacts to it, because you just never know until you see guys get hit in pads.”

Why are they surprised that Hayne can take a hit ?

I'm always amused when I hear Americans talking about whether he can take a hit.
The guy has been playing a professional contact sport for 10 years, and has taken plenty of hits (plus given out more than a few of his own).
Just goes to show how much Americans know about other football codes.

it wasn't that hard a hit ffs

I like how he's carrying a P plate hanging off his back

He just hasn't pulled his jersey down all the way, but it would have been funny it is was a P or L plate...

It surprises me too, the guy has been in full contact with no pads, and they think that getting hit with pads will be harder? Americans are soft..

I've seen him get hit harder by guys half that guys size.. and pop straight back up and keep running.

His TD run looked impressive though, I think he actually has a good shot at making the squad, I'll be watching the 49'ers pre-season games now to see how he does for realsies.

When do pre season games start and are they on foxtel?

You're all forgetting how superior NFL athletes are, though - they're gods among mortals.

:sarcasm:

I recall Isaac Luke smashing Hayne in a bigger hit.

Notes from OC Geep Chryst: Jarryd Hayne to Play on Offense, Special Teams vs. Texans

Posted 1 hour ago

1. Hayne to Make NFL Debut
It appears as if Chryst is just as curious as the rest of the football world to watch former rugby league star Jarryd Hayne appear in his first NFL game.
The coordinator said he expects to see a heavy dose of the running back in Houston.
“You can talk all you want about it or you can forecast all you want, but I think it’ll be exciting for him in the locker room before the game because we all know, you go to practice, then you go to a padded practice and then you go to a preseason game and that’s how you ramp up,” Chryst said. “I’m excited to see him. We’re definitely going to use him on all facets of the game: running, catching, fielding on special teams, whatever (special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey Jr.) wants to do.
“And at the end of the day, I think we’ll know more about Jarryd. … He’s been running through contact pretty much his whole life, so I’m really excited to see him play.”

I'm gonna be nervous for him! Pretty big effort to get this far!

Me too. I agree.

Couldn't help thinking today (after seeing the above photo) how long it will take him to rid himself of his RL habits.

I hope he kills it!!
I'm already proud of him for getting this far and getting the wraps he has received already.
