To those saying that RU has much more stringent rules and would never debase the international game, Lesley Vainakolo, Shontayne Hape, Henry Paul and Denny Solomona say hi.
And which National Rugby teams did they play for? I will give you a hint.. it was only ever one... do try and keep up.

Why do people get so bent out of shape about it, we'll never have a point where we have like a Thurston or Cronk declaring for someone other than the 'big 3' from the get go and nobody else.
This doesn't even happen in the Olympics.

So.. to summarise. Rugby has a one country for life rule... now. But they didn't always, e.g Stehpen Bachop in the 90's. And that one country is only for rugby union, not other forms of rugby. Got it.

Can you explain this rule? I don't understand. Is it because he wasn't born in NZ?

In order for a player to qualify under residency, the said player must have held their primary residence for the preceding 60 months in that country.

Hurrell was born in Tonga. To play for the Kiwis he has to live there continuously for 5 years before selection. He's broken his continuous residency in NZ by moving to Australia to play for the Titans.

That's right, and since the original question was which sports allow the same country switching that League does, Rugby is not one of them.

If plans were actually in place they would know who's available in advance. Tonga will be able to build off this. Kiwis are paying for their lack of professionalism and complacency.

Of course all countries would have plans in place but the problem is no country knows exactly what players will be available for them. NZ would have had Taumalolo as a huge part of there plans untill he opted for Tonga the day before there squad was announced. This goes for guys like Ma’u and Fusitua aswell. Fiji would have hoped to have RCG in there forwards only to have him available for them, then taken away in the space of two days. This is common for all the second tier countries and now the first tier aswell.

I wish them all well as they are working within the rules of the game but imo opinion nations swapping is rubbish

They are supposedly professional organisations. The fact that NZRL didn't know Taumololo was going to jump ship the day before is an indication on the quality of the NZRL not the rules. Baffling.

Its painful listening to the knobs on 2sm absolutely butcher the eligibility laws...almost as painful as listening to that damn newsreader that can't read!

They probably should have had their suspicions but when the player in question refuses to answer calls, texts and emails there's not much more you can do except have a plan B ready to go.

If we aren't concerned about players swapping nations every time there is a World Cup, why do we have a Cup involving nations. We might as well have 14 teams, call them anything you want, then toss up the names of top 200 or so players in the world and let their be a mad scramble for players.
