I expect Bud will play this weekend, he has been training with the team for 2 weeks.
The club has not wanted to rush him back.
The injury is not the same as last year, this is a small tear in his left leg that was giving him a sharp pain when he stepped. Its early in year and his career and there is no point risking him. Also he did not have a calf injury as some have posted on here.

Cheers George! Your insight is a welcome change to drip feed scripted and benign club commentary that we have to put up with. Couple that with random commentary posts from supposed game experts via social media that rarely tell us anything new.

Can't wait to see Bud back in the squad. Play him at 9 and he can swap throughout the game with Hunt in the halves.
We haven't really got our spine comfortably sorted in these early rounds . When we have the benefit of four fit and ready 1, 6, 7 and 9 who are deemed to have been planned for this year, we might get a roll on from the middle of the comp to the end. We have to wait and see. The Sloan, Amone, Sullivan and Hunt combination has to be put into place sometime this year. If Hook likes to move some players around like he has with Mbye and Bird, he should try the combo I have suggested at least when Sullivan becomes match hardened after a few games in reserves. If he doesn't try it, it will be something that I feel we will all regret. He would have nothing to lose.

On the other hand, he is the coach and if the guys he has picked for the next round succeeds and continue to do so, then the other combination can be put on ice. Am I fantasising here?

Dragons spine suffers another blow with Sullivan sidelined as Amone faces court

St George Illawarra’s playmaking stocks have suffered another blow with Jayden Sullivan suffering a pre-season hamstring injury in the same week Talatau Amone faces assault charges in court.
Sullivan, considered a long-term halfback successor to captain Ben Hunt, is expected to miss the Dragons’ trial match against touring Super League champions St Helens and the Charity Shield clash with South Sydney, costing him game time and the chance to push for a spot in Anthony Griffin’s first-choice 17.
An early six-week recovery prognosis has Sullivan touch and go for the Dragons round two clash against the Titans after a bye in the first week of the season.
His injury blow comes with fullback Cody Ramsey still unavailable for the long term through illness and Amone appearing in Wollongong court on Wednesday.

Amone has been charged with causing reckless grievous bodily harm in company, damaging property and stalking from a November 15 incident in which he is alleged to have attacked a roofing contractor with a hammer.
Allegedly armed with hammers, Amone, his father and another unknown man “followed [the victim] onto the roof before the 39-year-old man was allegedly pushed, causing him to fall two metres,” according to a police statement issued last month when the Dragons five-eighth was first charged.

The incident stemmed from a dispute over where the tradesman had parked his ute near Amone’s family home, police said at the time.
The reckless grievous bodily harm in company charge carries a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment, meaning it meets the threshold for the NRL’s “no-fault stand down” for players charged with serious criminal offences that carry more than 11 years’ jail time.
Neither the Dragons nor the NRL have commented on Amone’s immediate playing future given his case is due for mention in Wollongong local court on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old has trained as normal since his arrest in late-December.
Tyrell Sloan shapes as St George Illawarra’s fullback with Ramsey sidelined indefinitely as he recovers from a debilitating bout of ulcerative colitis. The 22-year-old has left hospital but there is no timeframe for his return to play.
It has been a tumultuous summer for the Dragons bright young stars given both Sullivan and Sloan requested formal releases from the club - which were later withdrawn - as they sought more regular game time at NRL rivals.
Moses Mbye and Sullivan are the leading options in the halves should Amone be unavailable.

I love how these so-called journos (and I use the term loosely) like to include all recent negativity and dramas in any new story. In other words, taking every opportunity to remind and rehash misery onto the club. It doesn't take much intelligence and shows classic cheap easy shots from less than credible sources which is why they're successful.
Rant over but FMD I am over it!

Thanks Snowy.

For the past 2-3 years, we have banked our future on the likes of Amone, Sullivan, Sloan, Feagai brothers, Treigh Stewart etc. These kids as we know were premiership winners in the 2019 S G Ball Comp.

I'm wondering if during their "apprenticeship" years if they were properly conditioned and developed and mentored for on and off field situations. These kids just don't have the luck going for them somehow and they need tons of it to go with their great potentials.

I know that injuries can happen at any time and some more serious than others and also suspensions can be lengthy. Amone's situation could have been avoided if the head of the Amone family had a sensible head and was able to understand the difference between right and wrong and to pass it down to his 9 kids. It's like John Hopoate and how his hot headed nature has been passed down to a couple of his sons. The same for Manase Fainu who was jailed for stabbing a church leader. These guys are of Tongan heritage. Is this just a Tongan trait or it is just a co-incidence?

But back to Sullivan. It is bad luck that he again has another injury. Is he just injury prone? We have not been able to see him play in a regular half position in first grade at all so we still have to wait to see how he will go a lot longer now. Sending him to the USA for the treatment like Mitchell, Turbo and Papenhuyzen is something I cannot see happening as the 3 mentioned are proven "superstars" worth spending money on whilst Sullivan has not reached anywhere near their status and stll is an "unknown quantity" in my opinion.

So we have some serious problems with Sullivan to add to the other problems we have with Amone and the playing strength of our 2023 squad.

Sorry to paint this picture - just had to get it off my chest for today.

"Moses Mbye and Sullivan are the leading options in the halves should Amone be unavailable" ...... Why would Mybe be even considered if Sullivan was not injured for the halves ...... Mybe should only be used as a backup ......

Calm down and take a breath. Robson and Hutchinson had injuries as youngsters and we filled the roster and let them go. Stick with the youth and they will (eventually) come good! Lots of half’s and backs coming through, just have to work on forwards, skill development and conditioning. Looking forward to when we are on the paddock.

Clearly they are not managing Sullivan's workload effectively given his previous hamstring issues. They have to be stupid not to manage him differently. This all but guarantees Mbye will be starting the season at 6, and hook's love for older and more experienced guys will most likely mean Sullivan struggles to take the jersey off him. What a year this will be....

Clearly you think that anything that goes wrong is the clubs fault..

LOL what do you say about Manly & Turbo then?

Some people just have a propensity for certain injuries that become a recurring problem and it takes very little to trigger it.

No, I don't. If you've read my posts on the forum over time you'll note I give the club credit when credit's due, even when others do not. If you look at the evidence of Turbo's latest hamstring injury, you'll probably come to the conclusion it was Manly's doing most likely. Tom has not injured his hamstring for the last 18 months. The medical guy managing Turbo's hamstring has moved on to the dogs this pre season. With a new coaching staff at Manly, and a new medical staff, it's fair to assume they did not fully understand how to manage his hamstring issues. Whether they gave him too much workload, or had him doing things he shouldn't have been doing and wouldn't have been doing under the old medical staff's watch is unknown. But it is entirely likely they mismanaged turbo's hamstring, hence the injury. Remember, last season he did his shoulder, not his hamstring. His hamstring has been successfully managed for more than a year and half, and is it a coincidence that when new coaching and medical staff come in he re-injures his hamstring? I doubt it. Fair play to Manly though, because they have since acknowledged they don't know how to deal with the issue themselves and sent him to the US. So that's what I say about manly and turbo.

With Sullivan, of course it can be bad luck. But, I feel as though he has likely been mismanaged and overworked given his previous history of hamstrings. As a player so young, these injuries will hamper his career and potentially destroy it if it is not sorted out now. He needs to be managed correctly.
