Favouritism at NRL level is rife and unhealthy for the game. I'm sure that if it was a Storm, Broncos, Rooters or Dogs player, no moves to introduce such rules would be in motion.

Greenburg feels free to act now because the suspension rule does not effect the favoured Clubs or his beloved Canterbury.

I say if it is deemed that something dramatic must be done now to set a standard, then the NRL must transfer all responsibility for such a decision to itself; including all financial aspects and salary cap adjustments to the player's club.
I dont think Dogs supporters or club would agree with you since the media went out of their way to climb trees to get a photo and suspensions handed down from their mad monday celebrations.
The other 3..well friends in high places including some media

The two players had plenty of time to get their story straight prior to presenting themselves to police. So it is not so complicated at all. The only problem will be if at the end of the trial, it is believed the players or the girl are telling the truth.

There's an assumption there that the two players colluded and are continuing to collude- we can't make that assumption. All we have is De Belin's not guilty plea- nothing else

While I fully understand the passion involved with all this, when we talk about the victims, depending on which side of the fence you are on, we could mention JDB, the girl concerned and Jack’s partner, but the one victim few mention too much is the Club. I do understand that the individuals involved are suffering terribly but the Club is suffering as well. Membership numbers will likely decrease and current sponsors, let alone anyone considering sponsoring our team in the immediate future will likely walk away. Not to mention the morale impact on our team. Natural justice may mean that Jack should be free to play until he is found guilty or not, but I fear if that does happen the Club will play a high price indeed.

Don’t you love the NRL’s “tough stance” on JDB. We “will give the Dragons the chance to stand him down”......so we carry the legal ramifications because we are the ones who stop him fulfilling his contract. So we carry the legal can if he is found guilty.......
gutsy call Todd and Mr Beattie.

Exactly, if the NRL want to change policy and see De Belin stand down, they chould include in their policy the NRL's willingness to take full responsibility to announce the decision and cover all financial aspects relating to that decision.

NRL meeting Dragons today and announcement expected on Thursday. All of this will be academic- with JDB likely being stood down -

Jack de Belin has refused the NRL’s offer to stand down as the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) gets set to decide his fate on Thursday.
De Belin and Dragons officials on Wednesday met with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, who attempted to convince him to stand down of his own accord while he answers a rape charge.

AAP understands that de Belin declined the opportunity and the Dragons will instead wait for the outcome of Thursday’s momentous meeting of the independent commission.

It’s gonna get messy
of course it will, when you make up rules as you go it never works out, they want him to stand down, so they don't get sued, i mentioned this a few weeks ago, Dragons want the NRL to stand him down, because who ever does will be facing court action, people seem to think if they stand him down with pay its ok, but people forget that financially he is potentially missing out on more cash, then there is the whole legal issue around innocent till proven guilty etc...

That is why the NRL or ARLC should assume responsibility both for issuing the stand down order and for any financial compensaton to JDB and SGI.

Where i think this went off the rails was when the allegations against him were read out in court and became public information via the media. I was shocked by them but feel that not only in his case but in all cases this should not be made public as it goes right to the basis of innocent until proven guilty. Basically mud has been thrown and some of it will always stick.

Courtroom showdown: Dragons serve ARL Commission with legal papers over Jack de Belin

February 27, 2019 7:12pm
Staff writers FOX SPORTS

St George Illawarra has reportedly served the ARL Commission with documentation on Wednesday, advising them that if Jack de Belin is stood down the club will take legal action.

The ARLC will hold a landmark meeting on Thursday to decide de Belin’s immediate playing future after the NSW representative was charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman.

De Belin has pleaded not guilty to the charge with the court case to resume on April 17.

According to a Channel 7 report, the Dragons believe there should be a presumption of innocence and that no decision should be made until the court proceedings are complete.

Channel 9 reported De Belin met with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg, Dragons CEO Brian Johnston and player agent Steve Gillis at St George Leagues Club on Wednesday where the player “strongly protested his innocence”.

Greenberg reportedly tried to convince de Belin to voluntarily stand down, but the Dragons lock refused the offer.

The Dragons will now wait for the outcome of the independent commission’s meeting where an announcement will likely be made regarding a crackdown on players who face serious criminal charges.

It is expected de Belin will be forced to stand down on full pay with the Dragons to receive salary cap compensation up to $600,000 which will allow them to sign a replacement player for the upcoming season.

De Belin was left out of the Dragons’ Charity Shield squad on Tuesday because of player welfare concerns.

ARLC chairman Peter Beattie spoke to Channel 9.

“That was all about player welfare and looking after Jack,” he said.

“Above a certain line, based on the severity of the offence and we have to determine that yet, but say for example an offence that brings a penalty of 10 years, then above that if you’re charged with that then it’s an automatic stand down. No fault, no presumption of guilt. A presumption of innocence. Below that then Todd still has the discretion. But we’re still to finalise that.”

When it was put to him that things will become murky below that line, Beattie said: “Well that is a matter for the discretion of the CEO. We have a good CEO in Todd Greenberg.”

The move to stand down players before court cases are over has already been opposed by the Rugby League Players Association.

“They’re absolutely right and that’s why this will be no fault,” Beattie said.

“That is, we’ll make no determination about a player’s guilt or innocence — that’s a matter for the court. As far as we’re concerned, they’re presumed to be innocent. This is a no fault provision.”

I’ve asked before and I’ll ask here again - can you give a single example where spmoeone, from any industry, was stood down on full pay while serious criminal charges are tried, and they successfully sued their employer? Standing people down on pay in these situations is quite common, surely someone had had a go at suing?
