P.S, Thanks for the link.

In terms of the quantum, I don’t know about the easts ceo but the titans chairman pointed to NRLs drop in the Net Promoter Score:
He seems to have approached it in a fairly simple way...

From: https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/ga...-sponsors-go-cold-on-nrl-20190216-p50ya3.html

"It all goes to the brand," Watt said. "In this last little while, it’s dropped by 13 points. A point is apparently equivalent to $500,000. That’s us measured against soccer, the AFL and the rest.

Just reading that quote, he doesn't seem 100% sure. But happy to give benefit of the doubt.

Let's look at the Souths CEO (Blake Solly) quote...

"It's been more difficult to attract new sponsors," he said. "It's slightly easier to retain existing sponsors because they see all the positives about the sport because they're already in it; they can see 95 per cent of the players in the game are fantastic and great role models.

Quite frankly I think we need more of this, it's a more positive approach to highlight these "fantastic and great role models". In any case, even Solly says that existing sponsors are standing behind the Clubs and the game.

My argument has been at directed at those posters who claim that 'sponsors are walking away'. There has been no evidence of this. At the very least, it is an overstatement.

De Belin, Walker, May stood down after NRL invoke new rule

The NRL on Monday announced it has added the no-fault stand down policy to its rules, with Jack de Belin, Tyrone May and Dylan Walker informed they have been prevented from playing until court cases involving them are concluded.

On Thursday de Belin will resume a legal challenge to the implementation of the policy at the Federal Court in Sydney, just two days prior to the Dragons season opener against North Queensland in Townsville.

The new rule was added to the NRL Rules on Monday, giving effect to the February 28 policy announcement of the Australian Rugby League Commission.

Dragons season preview - NRL Teams

The rule will see the automatic no-fault stand down of players charged with serious criminal offences and grant the NRL CEO discretion to stand down players charged with other criminal offences, particularly those involving women and children.

In a media release, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said the new rule had been notified to all 16 clubs.

With de Belin now needing to be successful in court to be permitted to play, Dragons back-rower Tariq Sims said his brother Korbin looms as the long term replacement if de Belin is unsuccessful.

De Belin trained with the Dragons in Wollongong on Monday.

Australian Test forward Tyson Frizell moved from right second-rower to the middle in place of de Belin during the Charity Shield against South Sydney and is expected to play there on Saturday night as Korbin Sims is unavailable due to suspension.

The new rule was added to the NRL Rules on Monday, giving effect to the February 28 policy announcement of the Australian Rugby League Commission

However, the switching of Frizell created defensive issues on the right edge as Rabbitohs rookie Corey Allen scored a hat-trick of tries.

Sims believes the inclusion of Korbin after his two-match ban could be a long-term solution if de Belin is unable to play while he defends sexual assault charges.

"We get Korbin back after a few weeks ... he plays the exact same game," Sims said.

"He hits through the middle, he ball-plays really well, takes some smart options defensive-wise and he will be a really good player for us."

Besides Frizell, the other most likely option for the lock spot would be prop Blake Lawrie, who played 55 minutes of the 36-24 Charity Shield loss to Souths in Mudgee after a HIA sidelined Blues front-rower Paul Vaughan early in the game.

Lawrie made nine Telstra Premiership appearances for the Dragons last season, including two finals matches, and is expected to become a more regular fixture in the top squad after the departure of Leeson Ah Mau to the Warriors.

"Jack is our starting lock, he played for NSW last year and has become a leader in our forward pack so if he is not there it is certainly a big loss," St George Illawarra captain Gareth Widdop said.

"We are not going to pick up a player like Jack but we just have to adapt to that. We have got no other option."

Sims said the St George Illawarra forwards were determined to leave their mark on opposition packs irrespective of who fills each role.

"We have got myself, Paul Vaughan, James Graham, Jeremy Latimore, Tyson Frizell – there are some pretty handy players who do bring a lot of spirt, and pride and passion, in their games,” Sims said. "If that means we all have to lift another 5 per cent then so be it".

While the immediate focus is on the make-up of the Dragons side to play the Cowboys, the players and club are concerned about de Belin's welfare.

"We need to make sure we are there for Jack. Obviously, his welfare is the most important thing but he seems to be OK," Widdop said.

"It’s there but it is not going to be a distraction, we can't let it be because we have got a job to do."

Dragons coach Paul McGregor is due to announced a 21-man squad at 4pm Tuesday for the trip to Townsville.

A new "no fault" stand down rule has been added to the NRL Rules. The new rule gives effect to the Policy announced by the Australian Rugby League Commission on 28 February 2019.

The NRL today approved the rule which will see the automatic "no fault" stand down of players charged with serious criminal offences.

The NRL CEO will also be able to use his discretion to stand down players charged with other criminal offences, particularly those involving women and children.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said the new rule had been notified to NRL Clubs and three players – Jack de Belin (St George Illawarra Dragons), Dylan Walker (Manly Sea Eagles) and Tyrone May (Penrith Panthers) have been advised that they have been stood down pending the outcome of their court cases.

Jack de Belin withdraws interim injunction appeal
March 12, 2019 4:58pm
John DeanFOX SPORTS

St George Illawarra lock Jack de Belin has withdrawn his application for interlocutory relief in a bid to immediately play despite the NRL’s no-fault stand down policy.

That rule was put in place on Monday by the NRL with de Belin’s case originally to continue on Thursday, just hours before the first game of the season.

The Dragons named their team on Tuesday afternoon to play North Queensland on Saturday night, with de Belin left out of the 21-man squad.

A full hearing in the Federal Court will now take place on April 16.

“In the interim the No Fault Stand Down Rule will continue to apply to Jack de Belin and he will be stood down during this period,” an NRL statement said on Tuesday.

The Federal Court has today set down 16 April for a final hearing of the proceedings brought by Jack de Belin challenging the application to him of the NRL’s No Fault Stand Down Rule.

In these circumstances, Mr de Belin’s application for interlocutory relief and the hearing set down for Thursday, 14 March 2019 will not take place.

In the interim the No Fault Stand Down Rule will continue to apply to Jack de Belin and he will be stood down during this period.

Full credit to Jack here. As hard as this would be for him and the club, withdrawing and allowing round 1 to kick off without this as it’s side show is a credit to him.

The saddest thing about losing JDB is not the fact that it makes it seem very difficult to compete for the premiership, it is that it will be McGregor's go to excuse when we start losing game after game.

You can all just hear it ringing in your ears now can't you!

Anyone watch NRL 360?

Crawley brought up the effect on the Saints in a pretty good way. Glad somebody is bringing up this issue.

As I see it,
1) NRL decides to stick with old policy after the JDB incident
2) summer from Hell for the game
3) 2 weeks out from the season start, the NRL decides they need to act ( based on more than the JDB case)
4) saints are not given support, and can’t plan with the uncertainty of the situation. In addition, Saints need to cover the costs of the NRL rule change.

Maybe it’s for the good of the game, but it’s definitely a contentious decision and we have been thrown under the bus!

Yeah, I saw it. Crawley spoke very well.

Ill conceived all round by the NRL. Definitely takes away some of my enthusiasm for the season.

Hope the Dragons get off to a good start in Townsville in Round 1 against the Cows!

B Johnston has already used this as his excuse to recommend Mary's extension.

No doubt Jack's fitness level is nowhere near nrl standard after such a disrupted pre season. So he needs to use this month to get a better level of fitness. And focusing his attention on that should be a distraction.

People do forget that the alleged incident took place on 8th December and it took the NRL many weeks to even think about changing the rule. A bug bear of mine as they did it to look as though they were doing the right thing. It was clearly not in their original plans.

Jack de Belin’s legal team has demanded details of St George Illawarra’s finances, including revenue generated from stickers and stubby holders, as they piece together their case against the ARL Commission’s no-fault stand-down policy.

De Belin and the commission are due to return to the Federal Court on April 15, the beginning of a three-day hearing that may not only have ramifications for the Dragons and NSW forward but also Manly centre Dylan Walker and Penrith pivot Tyrone May.

De Belin is arguing the commission’s stand-down policy fails on a number of fronts.

These include that it is a restraint of trade, was brought in without proper consultation with the players’ union and that the commission’s conduct was deceptive and misleading.

The commission claims in its defence that the code and its clubs would suffer irreparable financial damage if de Belin and co were allowed to continue playing while they faced serious criminal charges — the Dragons forward has been charged with aggravated sexual assault after an incident in Wollongong late last year.

Legal sources suggested the decision by De Belin’s lawyers to subpoena financial records had been done to counter the argument that the code and the Dragons have suffered a financial hit as a result of allegations against de Belin.

The Australian has obtained a copy of the subpoena to produce documents that was lodged with the Federal Court late last week.

Addressed to the St George Rugby League Football Club Pty Limited, it requests they supply monthly or other sales reports, revenue reports, data analyses, spreadsheets, graphs, charts, comparisons, management accounts and other documents recording revenue. It then details the specific areas of revenue covered by the subpoena, including money made by or on behalf of the Dragons from jerseys, other apparel, badges, stickers, stubby holders and other merchandise bearing the club’s image.

De Belin’s team have also requested evidence of revenue from memberships of the club, sale of corporate entertainment and hospitality packages, sponsorship income, and the sale of season tickets and other tickets for attendance at the club’s NRL games.

Finally, they have requested information of other revenue derived from the club’s NRL games for each month as well as other identifiable periods of the 2018 season. The Dragons were initially believed to be considering joining de Belin in taking on the commission but it is understood they had a late change of heart and left their star forward to fend for himself.

They have until April 10 to provide the information or risk being found in contempt of court.

In the commission’s defence, lodged with the Federal Court last week, they make specific reference to the new rule assisting in maintaining and protecting the reputation and revenue base of the game of rugby league in Australia and New Zealand.

They also say the rule assists in protecting the commercial interests of the ARL Commission. De Belin has been sidelined since the new rule came into effect prior to round one, although he continues to train with his teammates as he eyes off a victory in court and a potential return in coming weeks.

Powerbrokers at Rugby League Central say that would have dire consequences for the code and its corporate support — it is understood chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo has provided an affidavit detailing the financial damage that has and could be done to the code by the publicity surrounding de Belin and other players facing criminal charges.

The Dragons have struggled in de Belin’s absence, although they have also been without back rower Tyson Frizell for the past two games. They finally broke their duck last weekend with a win over the Brisbane Broncos.

De Belin’s absence also has ramifications for the NSW side and their State of Origin defence. He is long odds to be back in time for Origin I, let alone be in contention for the NSW side, and Blues officials are believed to be considering other players.

While Brisbane forward Tevita Pangai Junior has dominated the headlines, Melbourne forward Dale Finucane and South Sydney lock Cameron Murray are also in the mix.

Finucane has been knocking on the door for several years and has started the 2019 season in flying fashion as part of a Storm side that has won three straight.

Murray has been earmarked as a future Blues player for some time and appears ready to make the step up after forcing his way into the Rabbitohs’ starting side under coach Wayne Bennett.

The actions against De Belin are retrospective, reactionary and unfair. Read Brett Stewart's heartfelt interview in the Daily Telegraph this morning. He talks of only being prevented from playing in a relatively small number of matches before being found innocent but the emotional pain of that ban still sticks in his craw ten years later. He had to move to Melbourne to find anonymity and peace.

De Belin's case is more complicated than Stewart's due to the nature of the charges and the alleged presence of a third party so he stands to miss way more matches. By asking for this paperwork, De Belin's lawyers may be trying to blow a hole in the NRL's argument that the NRL and its constituent clubs are taking a financial hit as a result of this and other high profile cases. A before and after forensic examination of the Dragons income from merchandise etc may be part of this exercise.

Melbourne Storm back NRL on de Belin, Eels contract delay revealed

THE Jack de Belin case has taken an interesting turn with a rival club boss providing an affidavit to support the NRL’s case in standing down the St George Illawarra lock.

We understand Melbourne Storm owner and chairman Bart Campbell is the author of the letter which will be presented when the case returns to Federal Court on Monday.

Part of it contains a chronological order of how the game’s poor off-field behaviour had impacted the Storm.

Campbell was the most vocal club boss to hit out at player behaviour during the off-season train wreck. He was scathing of the NRL in February, writing to rival club bosses telling them the game needed to take a stand.

Storm boss Bart Campbell is taking a strong line on de Belin.
“Standing around while Rome burns is not good enough,” Campbell said in February. “As a game, we need to do something.”

Campbell also said de Belin would have been stood down immediately if he was a Storm player. We understand NRL boss Todd Greenberg and chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo, among others, have provided affidavits.

De Belin will challenge the new NRL no-fault stand down policy at a three-day hearing.

A bit rich coming from the club that cheated the NRL cap rules and introduced f.cking wrestling into the game to gain an advantage. No wonder I loath that cheating hypocritical arsehole club.
