It seems anyone with links to a clothing manufacturer and screen printing is producing unauthorised retros now.

makes me wonder why classic don't expand their retro range.. I for one would be more than happy to throw money their way for giants/seagulls/chargers/ sq crushers jerseys for the collection

At least this one the guy selling it isn't trying to mislead the public by saying that it's an original, it's obvious that it's not an original jersey. I don't have an issue with this kind of fake jerseys, it's the other guy who just prints them off, probably overseas for next to nothing and then sells them off as originals.

As I recall, Gold Coast-Tweed were backed by a syndicate of Brisbane businessmen plus a Sydney hotelier by the name of Stephen Larkin who owned a heap of hotels at the time, with his most notable being the Oz Rock Cafe at Kings Cross. The logo of the Oz Rock at the time was silver and black in colour.

The original Gold Coast colours were Silver, Black & White and the original jersey was sponsored by Oz Rock Cafe, who had their logo plastered all across the front of the jersey - was essentially a map of Australia with the words written across it.

Larkin was responsible for putting up monies for some of the then Sydney based players to jump ship and head north - notably Ron Gibbs, Billy Johnstone and Glenn Burgess. However his hotel empire was almost on the brink and I think he ended up bankrupted in the very early 90's. When Gibbs was signed he was paraded around in the Oz Rock sponsored jersey but I am guessing they didn't pay the bills, hence Seagulls club stepping in. I also presume that is why the Seagulls sponsorship is just in block lettering in the first year whilst it is more stylised logo is used for subsequent years.

Anyway to cut a long story short I am only guessing the original Gold Coast jersey colours were chosen due to a combination of the Tweed Head Seagulls club and the then main sponsor who turned out to be a dud.

Interesting. Tweed's colours aside though, black/white/silver is terrible for the GC.

There's probably a reason why Classic haven't expanded the range and it's probably due to there aren't that many people out there that would spend $120 on a Giants or SQ Chargers jersey, in saying that, I would be one of the few...

Not to mention it's a bit of a minefield with Retros and old sponsors gaining renewed visibility from Retros being made up again and don't think the NRL are all that keen on them if I remember correctly as they devalue the current jerseys.

What if Classic were to be licensed by the NRL to sell a range of retro sublimated jerseys, printed "as ordered", sold only online and released for a limited time?

That way you could have limited runs, and new "retro" designs offered each year.

As for the sponsorship question - if a club has issues with old sponsors being on them, there's 3 other options:

1 -They could be offered as cleanskins (hell, shirts before the late 1970s were that way anyway)

2 - Have the club name, nickname or initials in that spot (eg Cronulla-Sutherland or Sharks or CSFC in the sponsor spot.)

3 - Use the modern sponsor in the old jersey (Hang on.. isn't that supposed to be the point with existing heritage round jerseys??)

But yeah, imagine if an old design was opened for online orders between July & October, closed for orders on Nov 1, printed to order & shipped for Christmas.

THE KANGAROOS HAVE YELLOW SOCKS!!!

http://t.co/bmeIh99rQ5

Might have something to do with the fact it's being played in Canberra? GWS indorporated gold in to their jersey and of course the Raiders will have the blue and gold ACT strip later on. Maybe it's just keeping with the theme?

The shorts and jersey look terrible together although I plan on getting a pair of shorts to wear to the gym when they are released for sale...

They ask for ideas on their Facebook page and never respond to any ideas posted.

Here are my city country origin mock ups. From my memory growing up, City always wore all blue. I also remember the curtain raiser was City Firsts vs Country Firsts which was still made up of all first grade players who didn't get selected in the main teams…how times have changed with players now pulling out. City Firsts team used to wear the yellow jersey with blue shorts. I don't know why City now wear the yellow jersey when historically all blue was their kit.
