Wasn't there a dispute between the board and the players and the king of Tonga got involved too? Can't remember exactly what the result of the dispute but guessing that's why they're an "invitational" side.

from what ive learnt- the INVITATIONAL X11 is a 'rebel' team, however just this week they have been granted test status.
The MATA MA'A (official test team recognised by Tongan government) is pretty much in the bin/on hold until further notice
no idea how this affects rankings, but its pretty much the Tongan team for now
