Round 7 results

Sydney Bulls 40 beat Asquith 18
Cabramatta 12 beat Mounties 4
Windsor 54 beat Chester Hill 12
Wenty 46 beat Demons 6
The Entrance 58 beat Shellharbour 4
Belrose 38 drew with Erina 38

Table

12 Windsor (+107), Belrose (+79)
11 The Entrance
9 Sydney Bulls
8 Mounties (+80), Cabramatta (+49)
6 Wenty (+74), Chester Hill (-92)
4 Erina (-36), Shellharbour (-156)
2 Seven Hills (-117), Asquith (-124)

Wenty's bizarre result against Shellharbour last week has cost it 5th spot. It is a long season but the 2 points and the F/A opportunity missed could be very costly at the end of the season where there are no playoffs for teams on equal points. The table appears to be split between 7 teams in the hunt and 5 others with lots of work to do. Erina appear the be the strongest of the bottom 5, with good work in draws against The Entrance and Belrose and a competitive loss against Windsor being undone by losses to Asquith and Shellharbour.

The Belrose Eagles kept their unbeaten Jim Beam Cup season intact with their second successive high scoring draw against a committed Erina Eagles outfit in the battle of the birds at Lionel Watts park yesterday. A try for Erina in their first set, following a Belrose fumble from the kickoff, gave the visitors a 4-0 lead. Five minutes later, an Erina raid down the Rose’s left side brought another 6 points, and with Belrose still catching their breath, added another converted try to lead 16-0 in as many minutes.
Belrose needed to get into the game and in their first spell of sustained possession were able to put the Erina defences under pressure. It was a perfectly executed planned move involving Richie Plummer and Jim Curtis which saw fullback David Pangai stroll through under the posts and the Rose’s fans could now smell a comeback. Belrose were now starting to look the more dominant and were gaining the upper hand but a succession of play-the-ball infringements limited their scoring opportunities. Erina capitalised on some good field position to score another converted try and with 10 minutes to go to half time and a 22-6 lead were still in the driving seat.

The period leading into half time was all Belrose and two simple tries, one a trademark barge over from Nathan Hollingsworth, and the other to a rampaging Steve Carew out wide gave them some impetus leading into the break. Half time Belrose 14 Erina 22

Belrose seemed to gain some composure from their oranges and looked a better side in the opening stages of the second stanza. The strong running winger, Tom Joseph, in the stylings of Eric Grothe, out paced and over powered several defenders on his way to the stripe and the Roses were now back in it at 20-22. Just 5 minutes later, replacement five eighth Tim Mortimer, got around his opposite to score under the sticks and Belrose now had the lead for this first 26-22.

An intercepted Belrose pass gave Erina some respite from another Belrose raid, and the sin binning of Jim Curtis for a professional foul, then gave Erina a great attacking platform which they took full advantage to score an equalizing try. The 12 man Eagles hit back with second tries to both Hollingsworth and Joseph to take a 38-26 lead with 17 minutes left to play. Erina, themselves now reduced to 12 men for a professional foul, really took the game to Belrose and were rewarded with a converted try to their fullback to bring them back to within 6 points. With 10 minutes left to go a fortuitous bounce from an infield kick gave their flying centre a try beside the posts to bring the score to 38 -38.

The final ten minutes saw desperate footy from both teams as they tried to break the dead lock, but not even the enthusiastic Belrose crowd could bring their team home.

Tom Joseph was a stand out for Belrose and Matt Forrest had his best game of the season. Martin Cook lifted the side when he came on. Nathan Hollingsworth and Richie Plummer crafted most of the attacking raids whilst Steve Carew was a tower of strength in the second row.

Although undefeated, Belrose have conceded the competition leadership to the Wolves on points difference. Although boasting an attractive attacking record, the Belrose Eagles need to become tighter in defense as their defensive record is befitting of teams lower down the table. The propensity of this team to give head starts is bewildering but the ability to dig themselves out of tough situations is a rare quality.

Belrose hope to get back to their winning ways when they take on competition newcomers, Chester Hill, at Terry Lamb Reserve this Friday night at 730pm.

BELROSE 38 (Tries Joseph 2, Hollingsworth 2, Pangia, Carew, Mortimer Goals Plummer 5) drew ERINA 38 (Tries Roberts 2, Peak, Enoka, Karena, Shaw, Townsend Goals Karena 5)

WOUNDED BULLS BREAK MONTH LONG DROUGHT
They hadn’t won a game since before Easter but Jim Beam Cup Premiers, the Sydney Bulls, had little problem dispatching competition cellar-dwellers, Asquith, with an uninspiring 40-18 win at The Crest Stadium over the weekend.
“We’ll take the points”, reflected Bulls coach David Bayssari, who would have been perplexed by a second half performance that saw Asquith stem a points hemorrhage- limiting much of the differential catch-up the Bulls camp were looking at to beef up their mediocre for and against record.
From the kickoff, when Bulls bruising prop-forward, Fred Briggs broke the rush line for a first up 30 metre run, it looked like being a long afternoon for the Asquith visitors. With stand- in pivot, Nathan Wynn, calling the shots, the Bankstown boys shot to a quick fire 18-nil lead inside the first quarter of the match thanks to two tries by Wynn and plenty of ball-expression from the home side. At least three times in the opening period, however, the Magpie defense held their highly fancied opponents up over the line, saving what could have been a truly ugly first half blow-out.
Long serving Bulls flanker, Sam Rakabu, celebrated his return to the game after a six month absence, with a trademark four-pointer, only to be buckled in an awkward tackle, a chronic knee problem seeing him carried from the field and joining an epic injury list that has seen the Sydney Bulls patch working frantically to come up with positional solutions.
On the half-hour clever Magpies half, Chan Ly, gathered a toe-through to put his side on the ledger but that man Fred Briggs tore through just on the stroke of halftime to plant the ball under the Asquith crossbar, taking the Bulls to a 24-6 lead.
Two more Bulls touchdowns just after the break looked to break the Asquith resolve but a succession of penalties to the Pies put the pressure back on the Premiers, pressure that saw the Bulls concede a couple of annoyance tries before they slapped on a late Steve Jolly touchdown.
In a predominately disjointed game, the Bulls were best served by classy utility, Nathan Wynn, who has been a godsend to the depleted Bulls squad and backrower, Kaleeb Deeb, who now has to step up to spearhead a lot of his team’s roll after the severe, season-ending injury to gun running forward, Dean Vicelich. Commiserations also to long-serving Bulls club man, Samer El Masri, whose year has been shattered by a serious pectoral muscle-tear that threatens the winger’s playing future.
Our congratulations also to Bulldogs Flegg who played prior to the Bulls and defeated last grand finalist Newcastle 36 to 24.
This was the first in a series of Double headers to be played at the Crest and further the sister club relationship between the Bulls and the Dogs.
A good crowed was at The Crest and it was great to see prominent NRL stars Willie Tonga, Daryl Millard, Brad Morrin as well as coach Steve Folkes in attendance.
This week the Bulls travel to Erina to take on the Erina side buoyed by there surprise draw with undefended competition leaders Belrose.
On Friday, 18 May 2007 the Bulls return to the Crest to play St George feeder club Shellhabour at 7.30 pm with Bulldogs under 20s playing Cronulla at 6.30.
This is a great opportunity to watch a game of Football and who knows, who you might meet in the crowed.
Sydney Bulls 40 ( N. Wynn 2, D. Barakat, S. Rakabu, K. Deed, F. Briggs, S. Jolly tries; N. Wynn 6 goals) dft
Asquith 18 (C.Ly, M. Curtis, B. Masters tries; S. Hales 3 goals)

after 2 disgraceful performances big changes in Demons team for this week.
Anyone fat/unfit/playing with niggly injuries has been dropped. All 4 parra players have been given a shot, Ivan,Mcphee,Tannous and Schuster. they'll do better than the slugs that have been carried the past couple of weeks.

yeah no probs, schuster has surprised me actually, the other 3 have been perfroming well in A grade, but schuster in the first couple of games pulled up the handbrake everytime he hit the line, but his last 2 games he has been ripping and tearing, played against a big pack from the new cambelltown team last week and he was all over them.

The TV game this weekend is Mounties vs Windsor at Mounties. Should be a bit of a grudge game considering that Ghosn took 7 Windsor players to Mounties. The game has been switched from saturday night to sunday afternoon. The lights at Mounties all point at the same area so the cricket pitch area is light and the rest of the field is dark.

Considering that Mounties made a $14 million profit last year and spent $18 million on a gym, I think they have the resources to fix this problem.

Round 8

Friday

Chester Hill vs Belrose at Abbott Park 7.30pm

There are a few more unfamiliar names in the Chester Hill team this week but they have at least made a start to addressing some of their playing staff deficiences with the addition to the bench of Lafi Manua, who played 2 games in the NRL for the Roosters last year and Andrew Abounader, formerly of the Sydney Bulls, Bulldogs, Newtown and South Sydney. Belrose will looking for 2 points after consecutive draws.

Sunday

Erina vs Sydney Bulls at Erina 2.45pm

Matt Riddle is back for Erina while the Bulls substitute Naiqama, Salem and Bushby for Rakabu, Koborsi and Rokomaqisa. The Bulldogs are also playing on Sunday and Fred Briggs has been named in both teams.

Mounties vs Windsor at Mounties 3pm

The Wolves go into this game with 7 quality players to choose a bench from. Alf Betham is listed to start for Mounties but he is also named in the Parramatta team so the ultra fit and talented Lisala "Jack" Usai will probably move up from the bench.

Seven Hills vs The Entrance at Fairfax Stadium 3pm

There have been wholesale changes at the Demons with 4 Flegg players brought up from A Grade. It should be business as usual for the consistent coastal Tigers.

Cabramatta vs Wenty at Cabramatta 3pm

There is a bit of rotation occurring in the Cabra bench with Brett Rimmer getting his first start for 2007 and Craig Hodge returning after 3 seasons in Group 6. Wenty have Frost and Fluke returning from injuries.

Shellharbour vs Asquith at Ron Costello Oval 4pm

This is the battle of the celler dwellers. The Marlins have won 2 from 4 at home so the travelling could be an issue for Asquith but the visitors have 8 players that have played Premier League and that extra experience could be enough to produce their second win.

Eagles coach to give Karena half a chance
10May07
AFTER a disappointing first four years in the Jim Beam Cup the Erina Eagles searched far and wide for new talent for their 2007 side.

High on the priority list was a capable halfback who could lead the team around the park.
Coach Mark Horo, a former New Zealand international, spotted a potential candidate in the New Zealand Residents team when he toured the Shaky Isles last year with the Jim Beam Cup representative squad.
The player in the spotlight was Hayden Karena, 25, who accepted Horo's invitation to make the move from Hamilton to the Central Coast.
It is his third time in Australia after previous stints with Tumut in south-west NSW and the Central Comets in North Queensland.
Karena, who lives at Shelly Beach, is enjoying both a new lifestyle and his time on the field with the improving Eagles.
``I've been in Australia twice before but I have never lived this close to the beach,'' he said.
``I've always wanted to play rugby league at a higher level and although I might be getting a bit long in the tooth for the big time we'll see what comes out of this year.''
Karena is forming a handy combination with five-eighth Jonathon Tavinor who comes to the Eagles from the Parramatta Jersey Flegg squad.
The pair have been the starting halves for Erina for the past five games. Horo said their combination played a major part in Erina's improved performances this season.
The Eagles still sit in the bottom half of the ladder with just one win and two draws but showed their potential with some good efforts over the past month.
They drew with The Entrance, suffered a narrow loss to second-placed Windsor and last week held competition leader Belrose to a draw.
``The whole side is starting to play with some confidence and that has a fair bit to do with Hayden,'' Horo said. ``He has the X-factor and can create something when we need it.''
Both Karena and Tavinor have good kicking games, a bonus for a pack that has had to manage without several key enforcers due to injury.
``I think our six and seven can become the best in the competition within a few weeks,'' Horo said.
``Some sides have a good half or five-eighth but few have the luxury of having good players in both positions.''

Davis out again for high tackle
10May07
EXPLOSIVE Tigers Jim Beam Cup centre Jamie Davis has been suspended for the second time in two matches.

In his first game back from one week's suspension for The Entrance against Shellharbour last week Davis was placed on report for a reckless high tackle.
With carry-over points from his last suspension he recieved a two-week suspension that will see him miss Sunday's away match against Seven Hills and the following week's home game against Cabramatta.
Tigers five-eighth Nathan Ward was also up on a charge this week after he was sent off in the last minute of the match against Shellharbour for joining the melee that broke out after The Entrance scored their last try of the match.
Ward escaped suspension with the judiciary panel deeming the send-off was sufficient punishment.
Davis' back-to-back suspensions is a concern for coach Jamy Forbes who has talked to his fiery centre about being more careful.
``I don't want to change his tackling style because I like the aggressive way he plays the game,'' Forbes said.
``But he needs to be conscious of what he's doing. Not only has he cost himself two weeks on the sideline but he is also letting down the side.''
Davis will be replaced by David Djukich in the centres while Forbes will need to make two more changes due to injuries.
Interchange forward Steve Ekapati has been ruled out with a calf injury and winger Ryan Cribb is in doubt with a strained hamstring. Ekapati will be replaced by Adrian Jones and Vita Hemmings is on standby for Cribb.

Wolves demolish Rhinos
Brendan Rhodes
space.gif

Fullback John Randall is wrapped up by the Rhinos’ defence.
IN THEIR most emphatic performance of the season, the Windsor Wolves demolished the hapless Chester Hill Rhinos 54-12 in front of a strong home crowd at the Windsor Complex on Saturday night.
It was hard to work out if the Wolves were that good or the Rhinos that bad as Shaun Laurie terrorised the competition newcomers with his class footwork, anticipation and experience to snag four tries in a best performance.
Dan Randall started the rot for the Rhinos off the very first set of the match when he scored to set up the perfect start, and the match was over as a contest by half time with Windsor romping to a 26-0 lead at the break.
Randall finished two tries, as did Joel Willoughby, who had his best game since coming up from Wagga, while Wiremu Weepu and Jimmy Baira also crossed the line in the 10 tries to three romp, with two of the Rhinos' tries coming late in the match after the Wolves had opened a 50-point lead.
Forwards Shenelle Haumono, Jason Wrigley and Tito Nuimata completely dominated the Rhinos pack, paving the way for the Windsor backs to run riot.
Winger Chris Barlow continued his good early season form and John Russell played strongly at the back after returning from a hamstring injury.
Coach Trent Rosa was finally happy with the Wolves execution as the passes stuck for the first time since the Shellharbour match on Easter Thursday, and was full of praise for Laurie's efforts.
"It restores a bit of confidence in the boys that were starting to doubt each other and themselves – it gives us faith and an insight into how well we can play," Rosa said.
"Shaun was phenomenal, he is a freak - all his tries came from natural ability and he showed some speed for his old age."
With Belrose being held to a 38-all draw by Erina – their second in a row, the Wolves find themselves on top of the ladder on points
difference ahead of this week's huge match at Mt Pritchard.
A supporters' bus will travel to Mt Pritchard leaving at 1pm Sunday, with the seats free to Windsor Leagues Club members and filling fast. Contact 4577 6488 and reserve your spot. Kick off is at 3pm Sunday at the Mt Pritchard Sporting Complex in Lina Street, Mt Pritchard – not Saturday night as previously scheduled.

Sydney Bulls 32 (D Barakat 2, N Wynn, D Gilmore, A Saleh, S Jolly tries, N Wynn 4 goals) beat Erina 18 (J Lewis, Z Jones, A Munro tries, M Riddle 3 goals)

The Bulls led 26-6 three minutes after half time and again failed to deliver the killer blows. A highlight was when benchman Charlie Nohra found the ball in his hands on the 5th in the Erina quarter and with his first kick in 8 years with the Bulls executed a perfect grubber to the corner for Danny Barakat to score.
