I actually think that this has a bigger impact on the game than most realise. Players seem to have less loyalty than ever and it makes the fans totally detached from them. I think it also stops the fans from getting as attached to the clubs and reduces fan passion in a lot of ways.

Some of these player managers have seriously damaged the game and the NRL needs to wise up to the impact that it’s having. Though I’m not sure what the solution is.

I can’t tell you how deflated I feel as a Raiders fan right now towards the sport as a whole.

Is this all we get now? We basically have to roll the dice on a whole bunch of roughies and hope we hit the jackpot on the first go, otherwise they’ll just piss off for more money the next year?

I thought after years of mediocrity we were going to be a top club for at least two or three years. Nah, sorry, not happening. Who’d you think you were Canberra, the Chooks?

If Isaac Moses is deregistered here and Bateman signs a deal in the ESL, does Moses still get his commission on the new contract?

I’ve always considered player agents to be at the forefront of destabilising and agenda driven behaviour. I rated JB and felt he could have done a lot here in the NRL but it is what it is.

Would or could it have been different without a parasite running his contractual terms and conditions, IMO, yes.

We could keep John & sit him on his arse for a year in reggies or sitting out like Tallis all those year ago- but it means we have 650k or so cap (raiders reported offer to Bateman) sitting twiddling thumbs for a year, whereas if we cut him we can spend that money immediately to get another forward in.

So there is a pretty strong reason a club in that situation needs to let a player go- well *most* clubs do. But of course, it may be difficult for some to understand what this "salary cap" we speak of is & how it works...

Lol, no. I fully understand given we walked through literally the same situation with Latrell and decided to let him go BECAUSE of salary cap management. I was playing devil's advocate.

If you're going to have a go, have a proper go. Next.

Watching segment on NRL 360 tonight discussing Bateman and player manager tactics to get the player out of a contract by moping around the club..

Paul Kent mentioned a Manly player was advised by his agent to do that so he could released by manly and a better contract elsewhere. Trent Barrett was the coach and they didn’t want to let the player go, but in the end they had no choice as the guy was such a negative influence on the group.

Anyone know who the player was?

I’ve had a look at the manly rosters under Barrett and while there’s a few I think it might be, can’t be sure.

That is was happens when the LEADERS of the game allow this to happen.

There was a great thread in here years ago about this very topic and potential problems managers like Moses would eventually cause. You know, managers having too much power and controlling the show. Stackibg playets/coaches to certain clubs to hold said club over a barrel. Many in here argued pro manager system and that it would not be a problem.

Yeah, ok.

Todd needed to care of business while he had the big banner next to his name... you know, derigister the dodgy managers involved after the Parra cap problem.

Yeah, right.

That would be Blake Green - Moses wanted him out of Manly & at the Warriors on a 3 year deal.

Ricky Stuart is spot on - Isaac Moses is a cancer on the game. The situation at the Warriors & Broncos can be traced back to his dealings with players & remember Seibold & Kearney are both his clients. That said, the leadership at these 2 clubs by various CEO's & Boards are been poor. Wayne Bennett may have been pushed aside - but the reality is, he dodged a bullet.

Whole situation is hypocritical, easy to blame player managers whom, it’s their job to get players as much as possible , it’s clubs job to screw players as much as possible In terms of contract price .

but hey it’s ok to get rid of BJ when he signed up Scott

Also even them signing Bateman, they perused a player who was under contract in England , So they made him break contract (albeit England are smarter and they charge transfer fees) but when Bateman wants to finish his contract early at Canberra , oh no poor us we getting screwed by everyone .

If the clubs , coaches , nrl , rlpa were not so selfish the players and player managers wouldn’t do what they were able to do

not that I’m a fan of Moses , but can you lay the blame on him

when clubs f**k around players to get them off the books it’s ok

you use Seibold and Kearney as examples, they are head coaches and if they are playing to the tune of a player manager it says more about them than Moses.

players managers role is to get as much $ for their clients as possible , that is their core function.

a coaches function is to try win a premiership , coach players and keep healthy rosters etc , not to make money or support a player manager . If these coaches have their clubs playing the tune of the player manager they are at fault and no one else. The only benefit I can see a coach stocking up a roster with a player manager stable is because that player manager has a ‘in’ with the management of the club to get them a gig , which again implies the management of the club is not working for the benefit of the club.

Good player. The raiders should’ve moved mountains to lock him up. This is on them, not him.

eggs in one basket - an injured one at that. and then pissing off the rest of the squad in the process. yeah, would've been a good move.

good work raiders. players can improve a club, but they don't run them.

If he's considering Bulldogs for around $650k then you'd have thought it would be worth Canberra offloading someone to upgrade him. A rare attacking talent at second row is worth a lot.

that hasn't been the raiders approach to building their current roster. so why should they all of sudden go full genius like the bulldogs have been the last few seasons.

raiders have stuck to their recruiting principles. well done I say.

and the bulldogs would do well to go back to what they used to do well. get folks back into the club who had the nous for scouting and recruiting good talent on the cheap. they can't buy a squad for shit.

DT saying we offered 750k and it was knocked back. Looked around and couldnt get any bites at the 950k he wanted. Came back asking for the 750k and got told the money was spent.

So he's dragged his reputation through the mud and has to leave the club all for 100k less than we offered. Lol good work for your client there Moses.

It's all business. I think Stuart was particularly perturbed by Issac Moses and who can blame him? Everyone who has ever dealt with the man says the same

In terms of JB leaving and not fulfilling his contracts, i dont really care. This became a business a long time ago and the clubs started the war on contracts, can hardly blame the players for realising they actually hold the power and using it.

In this specific case, from the reports, Moses looks to have made an absolute meal of this... the Raiders offered 750k, JB management we're of the belief they could get an offer of 850-950k... they asked to go to the market, the Raiders agreed and that offer has never materialised... so they come back to the table wanting the 750k, except the club has already reallocated that money in other directions, that offer isnt there anymore
So now he's looking at deals reportedly lower than the 750k offer we made.

JB and his manage assess his market incorrectly and here we are.

Very good post.

I would say that managers do still have strong roles to play in our game to look after the players who get the most screwed by their nrl club. In many instances, NRL clubs stuff around local players with the view that 'they will never leave this city (so let's pay them peanuts),' but then pay overs to everybody else to move to, or stay at the club.

For years, the Cowboys were criminally underpaying Matty Bowen because they knew he had family connections to the region, and wouldn't leave. If his extended family drove to all the home games from Hopevale (already 8 hours by car), then they knew it would be logistically a nightmare for the Bowens to drive to Brisbane or Sydney. His management team offset some of it, but overall, he was still ripped off by the club.

So Raiders encourage Bateman to break his contract by throwing a bag of cash at him.

Then they're outraged he wants to break contact for a bigger bag of cash.

But its not good for the game, is it Stick?
