IF Tallis had picked NQ he would have almost been a nobody. He could not have been affored the luxury of playing small minutes and being the "impact" player. He would have had to to a lot more work and I am not sure he would have coped with that week in week out.

As for commentating wankathons, it's easy to say Thurston wins here but he's fresh in the mind plus commentators sensationalise the royal f**k out of every thing more and more these days. It's a tough one when you consider official communications. Joey supposedly called Matt Cecchin a f**king merkin but it'd be rough to hold that against him. Thirsty Thurston is more touchy touchy than a potty mouth although he's had his fair share of going ballistic at the ref... without penalty.

It was funny to me that of all the games Gus could have chosen to make that tweet it was a game that was scrappy as buggery for 60 minutes with no one really standing out. Then the Cowboys had a nice comeback and Thurston steered them home through a FG. A nice performance but by Thurston's own standards probably about a 6 or maybe a 7 out of 10 from him.

I used to laugh when this topic was brought up a few years ago but now Thurston has taken a couple of steps up since then and cemented his spot as one of the greats. I think we can at least admit that he's in the ballpark. I personally don't think he as good an all-round player as Johns but he's probably the closest one to him of anyone in the last 20 years.

I will add that of all the arguments you could use to support a player, from what we have seen from NSW selectors over the years as well as some truly special international coaches like Tim Sheens, using rep selections as a reason why one player is better than the other has got to be close to the bottom of the list of legitimate arguments.
