Oh FFS. Thurston isn't close to him.

He hasn't had a lack of talent around him. He should have had multiple premierships as a starting half by now if he was on the same level as Johns or even Lockyer.

I'd have Cronk before him as a #7 now.

Great player, but he's no where near being an immortal contender.

Has never dominated week in and week out and year in and year out at club level the way Joey did.

This shouldn't even be a question.

Maybe it was rhetorical?

Before we even entertain this question, Thurston needs to lead his team to a NRL Premiership or two.

Perhaps if Thurston had a whole team of cheeleaders on channel nine shooting 8 ropers across the room every time he even looked like touching the ball telling all in sundry how wonderful he is just like Johns did people would think Thurston was the ducks nuts too

I am sure Joey is better on the pingers though

All of the greats, especially in the modern era have steered their teams to a premiership. Sterling, Mortimer, Stuart, Langer, Johns etc have won the big one. Thurston has that lacking from his resume to even be in the conversation as a rival to Johns.

Yes, Thurston has all the individual accolades, awards, rep records in some all conquering teams etc. though there is one glaring hole and he needs to get that premiership ring before his career is done.

This guy is better than Thurston, he's won a premiership whilst wearing the number #7.

So the thread should be, 'Perry or Joey?'..............

Weak counter # 2. You want to put Shane Perry in the conversation of great halves be my guest. Stupid comment. Again, if Thurston wants to be in the debate with ANDREW JOHNS - AN IMMORTAL - A TWO TIME PREMIERSHIP WINNER - he has to steer a team to premiership success. Thurston failed in 2005 and the window is closing.

Weak count #3? You have no counter so come up with an average to good halfback who has won a premiership that Thurston hasn't been able to do. It doesn't really help making a case for Thurston does it? If I was going to go as weak as you opted, I would have went for Craig Wing or Ben Hornby. At least they played Origin right?

If you want to put any halfback up against Johns' tag as the "greatest halfback" in my opinion only that halfback better have steered his team to a premiership. I am not saying Thurston isn't a great halfback, he is, though he ain't going to challenge Johns for the tag of "greatest ever halfback" without a premiership ring that he was the catalyst for.

The end.

These types of comparisons are unfair, Joey was on another level when he wanted to be most of his career to anyone I had ever seen. Cam Smith is probably the guy that would be much better in this discussion.

Thurston has some Joey like qualities and some of his own like his speed but he doesn't turn it on consistently, maybe he should do the Fittler retire from rep footy scenario, Fittler went to another level at the Roosters when he did that. Cam Smith plays like everyone else is in slow motion, the great players have time on their side and Cam Smith always seems to have so much time.

Cam Smith is the only player in the game right now that is at that level, Thurston I think we need to wait until his career is over.
