These types of comparisons are unfair, Joey was on another level when he wanted to be most of his career to anyone I had ever seen. Cam Smith is probably the guy that would be much better in this discussion.

Thurston has some Joey like qualities and some of his own like his speed but he doesn't turn it on consistently, maybe he should do the Fittler retire from rep footy scenario, Fittler went to another level at the Roosters when he did that. Cam Smith plays like everyone else is in slow motion, the great players have time on their side and Cam Smith always seems to have so much time.

Cam Smith is the only player in the game right now that is at that level, Thurston I think we need to wait until his career is over.

Great post. Agree. Cam Smith is a future Immortal and in my opinion will be the most decorated player to have played the game when it's all said and done.

I don't know if he is as dominant as Joey was but then again he doesn't have to be. Smith is the puppet master who does what he has to do. Joey was more skillful himself but could also be the puppet master. Joey had everything but speed, but his running game was still good.

Smith has improved his running game as well, that was his one weakness but over the last season or two he has really become dangerous on the run.

I believe Smith is as dominant just in a different way. As you say, he is the "puppet master" and seems to have more time than just about anyone to have played the game. Very similar to Ricky Stuart and Andrew Johns before him.

Yeah Bunniesman is the guy you want in your corner to convince others you are right

:? Too new to "get" the post though what is there to argue there? Thurston was the catalyst for the Bulldogs premiership success that year from the bench? Nope. The post from BunniesMan is correct.

Bowen is more damaging for the cowboys than Thurston.
Bowen had more breaks, try assists and tries in 2012 than Thurston.

Take Bowen out of that line up and they wont make the 8.

Weak counter. Thurston "steered" the Bulldogs to victory?
Weak.
I just corrected your geniused statement.
Yes, Thurston has all the individual accolades, awards, rep records in some all conquering teams etc. though there is one glaring hole and he needs to get that premiership ring before his career is done.
The bolded part is 100% wrong.
He has Premiership ring.
You claim he doesn't.:lol::lol:

Oh yeah, and Andrew Johns is the best defensive halfback that has ever set foot on this planet.

Toovey was a marvelous defender, full of ticker, but Johns hit like a front rower with anger management issues.

I voted Johns.

But in my opinion the gap between Johns and Thurston is not as big as some people often state. Thurston is a class half back.

I'm really looking forward to watching Thurston this year behind that quality North Queensland pack.

My full quote:

All of the greats, especially in the modern era have steered their teams to a premiership. Sterling, Mortimer, Stuart, Langer, Johns etc have won the big one. Thurston has that lacking from his resume to even be in the conversation as a rival to Johns.

Yes, Thurston has all the individual accolades, awards, rep records in some all conquering teams etc. though there is one glaring hole and he needs to get that premiership ring before his career is done.

Yes, technically Thurston was part of a winning Grand Final side playing on the bench as I and others have suggested - did he lead his team like the great halfbacks before him did? No he didn't. Thurston was a young pup on the rise standing behind the "great" Brent Sherwin. Thurston made five or so appearances in 2004 and started only two or three times. Hardly weight to anyone's argument suggesting he was influential as any of the great halves were in their sides.

Move along Derek.
