Well that escalated quickly.

I never said those other records were irrelevant, in fact I said they were and advised you to use them to support your argument.

I've already made my position clear, chances are we'd agree.

Resume sulking.

I hate the Broncos as much as the next man, but they would have wiped the floor with Newcastle and anyone else in the ARL in 1997.

As I said in another thread recently, if SL didn't happen, Brisbane don't get Mundine and Tallis, Manly don't lose Roberts, Cunningham and Ridge. Manly would have annihilated Brisbane in 1997.

Mundine's contract was up and he signed with the Broncos in 06 didn't he? I dont think SL had anything to do with it. Remember they paraded him mid-season on his 21st birthday, which back then was un heard of.

Tallis on the other hand was a different story, but the Broncos, SL or not, have a history of getting the player they wanted (Lazarus, Hodges, Hannant) by any means.

As for Cunningham, take it from a Cowboys fan, by that stage of his career you weren't really losing much. (he was our POTY but in a wooden spoon team full of junk )

Mundine and Tallis didn't make the difference for Brisbane in '97. They were far too strong a side before getting either of them. Hence Brisbane thumping Manly (and just about all others) in '98.

Manly in 1998 weren't close to the same quality as 95-97, hence scraping into the finals as opposed to minor premierships. Hardly a valid comparison.

Which is why I pointed out that Brisbane thumped just about everyone else in the league in '98 as well.

Your claim that Manly would have annihilated Brisbane in a '97 comp not split is a bit far fetched.

Gordie's transfer is debatable. Super League certainly presented him with the opportunity but transferring to the Broncos was always something he wanted to do as he admired Langer & Walters.

Mundine just followed Gordie. Originally he was supposed to be a Bulldog but he hated it there and so he just went to Brisbane.

Neither played crucial roles in our side. Gordie was underdone having taken the year off and Mundine missed the bulk of the year and was played out of position to fit him in.

The emergence of Lockyer, Webcke, TC, De Vere & Thorn was what set the Broncos apart that season. A Broncos/Manly clash would have been very interesting and a great match to watch.

That's the one thing that shits me with Tallis, you hear him bang on constantly about NQ and how proud he was of his heritage and when presented the opportunity to come up here and play for us during SL (it's in his book from memory) he refused to and instead went with Brisbane because of is admiration of those above mentioned players and Bennett. I just think that if he did come up here there would have been other names from around the place follow so we could have at least tried to have a competitive team instead of the deadbeat also rans we had during 1996-1999. We were promised a heap of decent players from the defunct SL teams but as soon as Melbourne got created all the good players signed with News went there instead to bolster the frontier team whereas they knew regardless of the crap trotted out up here, footy starved fans would still show up regardless of the results. Would have loved to have had Kimmorley and Hill and Rodney Howe in Cows colours..........

He was told he could pick which club he wanted to go to and he chose Brisbane. Super League went back to him and offered him higher money to go to any other club but Gordie being Gordie he was adamant about sticking with the club he was a fan of growing up.

I don't think Gordie would have brought the changes the Cows needed. 97 was shaping up to be a good year for them on paper but they were such a rabble off the field the recruitment didn't translate to any meaningful success.

And Firey, losing Ian Roberts was no loss for you guys mate, OJ maybe but as said earlier, the only reason he won cow of the year was due to the utter trash up here playing at the time (except for Bowman).

Nah were still shit on paper mate
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_North_Queensland_Cowboys_season

and you will see what I mean, they were either very young local boys or long in the tooth has beens (Martin Locke went alright though)

Tyran Smith didn't even last the year out with us FFS!!!!!

I just think with Gordys few years with St george and the type of guy/player he is, he would have inspired the other local boys in the team and showed them what was expected in the big time and perhaps given the older guys a kick in the ass they needed. Anyone who was living up here at the time will attest to this, it was known that alot of the players up here would be out partying all week and footy always seemed to be a second concern for them.

Cows were actually expected to make the semis that year with the arrival of Sheens, Roberts, Cunningham, Walters, Lomax, Ferris, Mahon & T. Smith. Instead they went backwards, in a split competition no less.

Club was still playing catch-up in a lot of key areas, an underdone bench player wasn't going to provide the fixes the club needed. I can understand why you would be cross with him because it would have been nice to see the prodigal son return but it wasn't as if he lead your club on or anything.

Oh yeah, totally agree mate, but when you watch NRL on fox or the footy show, he always dropped the 'Im from NQ' in pretty often and seems to be very proud of being from up here, just blows me away he never wanted to be a part of the cows, considering Sheens standing in the game it's not like we had a nuffy in charge (well it took 4 years up here to figure out he was a nuffy with us ol' Teflon).

We were a massive rabble though off the field in most areas so I guess it is no surpirse Gordy was against coming here, one of those things I guess I just gotta get over and deal with .......... Hehehehe.

It's amazing really how the Cows managed to survive back then. The Knights are generally known as the people's club but judging by the stats. the title should well and truly belong to the Cows - the people kept them alive during their darkest years.

It's a shame that circumstances have prevented them from being able to support the boys now that they're so close to winning their maiden title. Hopefully that changes in 2013 because they're very very close.
