Right now it's Johns by a fair margin. JT needs to win a couple of premierships as halfback before any serious comparison can be made.

Also Johns for the fact he made Sean Rudder actually look like a first grader...

But he has dominated origin playing with nobodies like Lockyer, Smith, Inglis, Slater....

Johns could carry a shitty team in a way Thurston never has...

Comparing them in terms of their rep performances might be a different story, but in clubland alone Johns win in every single way.

It's a great debate, I think this is the first year we can actually take this comparison somewhat seriously which I guess is why the media is taking renewed interest in it, especially with Thurston well on track to his 4th Dally M. Unfortunately it doesn't take long for the bitchiness and pedantry such as claiming 1.5 premierships to come to the fore in these threads.

For me their attack is close to on par, both possess immaculate kicking and passing games, although Johns' array of kicks he was able to perform with accuracy may put him slightly ahead there. Thurston is a better goalkicker though.

As others have said, defence-wise Johns has Thurston covered pretty comfortably, although Thurston has improved in this area and has a nice round-the-legs tackle when he's prepared to use his shoulder. He can still be a liability in defence though which Johns rarely was.

Career-wise, you have to take premierships into account, even though it's so hard to get one. If Thurston seriously wants to go down as an all-time better halfback than an immortal in Johns you'd think he has to nab at least 1 premiership.

It's tight, but if I'm picking a team to play for my life Johns just gets the nod over Thurston. He's just ever so slightly the better all round player. He didn't really have an exploitable weakness.

Johns is the only player that would make me shit myself as a Roosters fan.

He was a God-like football player. Capable of destroying you single handedly. His power and running game close to the line is largely what separates him from JT. I also believe he had a much better long passing game on both sides. He was also the smartest player I've ever seen. And yes, defence is 50% of the game and he was a very strong defender.

The fact that this is even a debate amongst some shows just how easily it is to get caught up in the moment and forget how good others were. Wasn't Inglis the best in the world by a mile a month ago? 3 great games later and JT is the best ever? Fickle, very fickle.

The defence thing isn't as simple as it sounds anwyay. Johns was a great front on defender but Thurston is a fantastic cover defender and always chases to put himself in a position to get involved.

I'd take both thanks.

This is very true. In a debate between a current and a former player I think the current player is looked on more favourably sometimes just because it's easier to see what they're doing now/people forget.

Lockyer and Johns both still streets ahead of Thurston. Johns won a premiership with Sean Rudder as his partner, Lockyer with Shane Perry. Thurston has had, imo, better halves partners than either of those 2 along the way. Thurston also to this day drifts in and out of matches... sometimes never drifting in to begin with.

I feel like Thurston is an extremely good opportunist and can certainly turn a game and win it off his own bat. He's the best half going around in a very drab, unexciting era for halves in general. Like most, I don't really think he enters the conversation without winning a premiership or 2 of his own, rather than a cameo off the bench. Matty Johns has always pushed Thurston's barrow over his brothers, whether it's jealousy or an attempt to appear impartial, I'm not sure.

But Thurston has had to play his whole career with absolute plodders like Scott, Singh, Bowen, Tate, Tamou, Taumololo, et al. :sarcasm:
