Jordan Pereira - New Signing

In case anyone decided to actually use their brains, this is obviously not a signing for first grade.
We've lost KFFL next year and Dodd for this year, Pereira is just coming in for the Illawarra side to solidify our depth.
It's not a Dugan replacement, it's not an "uninspiring signing", it's just for depth. In case anyone had bothered to do any research, all clubs need to have a squad of 30 players next year, so we're obviously building towards that.
Besides, the Pereira announcement was hidden in the Nightingale extension article, so I would say that the club isn't exactly doing somersaults about picking this guy up or claiming he's a world beater.

Some of you need to stop looking for the worst in everything and making assumptions when clearly you have no idea.

I'm sure the three people who turn up for the Illawarra games will be pleased to see a new face......in the mean time there's a few U20s players who would love his spot.

Agree with the sentiment but I think the issue is not so much about the signings themselves but what the coach will end up doing with said signings.

He looks like a Peter Matautia like signing. I guess with Dugan, FaiFai Loa Glymin and Nona not being around next year we need to sign some older and more experienced backs. It seems
strange to let Nona go when Hutchison is out and McCrone is not up to the task. Where is the back up in the halves?

Like who? Garrick? He's already shifting between 20s and NSW Cup.

It's a depth signing mate, nothing more. If the 20s boys are good enough they'll claim "his" spot anyway.

While I sort of agree, I'm not sure we need signings for depth.
We need to use the juniors, a point that we all make.
We won't, but we need too.

Depth infers "possible first grade material". This bloke has a snow flake's chance in Hades of EVER reaching the NRL.

Depth signing so he will definitely play somewhere.
If he plays reggies then he will be stopping someone already within the system from playing there.
If he plays reggies and we get an injury in NRL then he is definitely inline to get a start because there are absolutely no indications whatsoever that Mc Fookknuckle will put young kids or lightly built players in NRL starting line ups.
So depth he may be but he is closer to NRL then he was a week ago and for him to be even remotely close is a sad indictment of our development system

Does anyone want to take a stab at the rationale behind signing this guy, while relinquishing Fai Fai Loa?

It's bad enough the club is retaining MacDonald.

But hey, as long as the unjustified reappointment of McGregor remains in place, everything is right in the world...right?

Absolutely agree that he is a depth signing only and as you say some people need to do research about next year's competition. There is no National under-20s comp next year and the NSW cup will have a more prominent feature. Basically we need around 36 players to fill first grade and Reserve grade. At this stage we don't know who is being let go or is seeking a release later in the year. Hutch hasn't re-signed at this point Dodds unknown as is Isaac Thompson. Dufty looks more like first grade as is Herbert, Garrick is a young Winger and we'll have a few graduates from the end of 20s from this year, but there are a few like Masters and Lomax who I very young and who are signed long-term.
Will this guy play first grade? Probably not but stranger things have happened and of course we are the dragons.

Good luck to him it's not his fault he was offered a contract and all he is doing is living his dream like thousands of other rugby league players.

Very uninspiring and troubling signing.

We currently have Levi Dodd, Euan Aitken, KFFL, Isaac Thompson, Reuben Garrick, Patrick Herbert, young Lomax, Matheson Johns and the list goes on.

Thompson has the power and physical presence to play FG. He needs to mature and some guidance from a senior professional like Flo to get his head right. Garrick, Herbert and Lomax all have clear upside.

Jordan is 24. Most first class backs make FG much sooner than forwards.

Must be merely injury cover for rest of season. No other plausible explanation.

The rationale is this bloke is on minimum wage and Fai Fai most likely wanted to leave in order to get more $$. By all reports he's been dominating in Q Cup this year and it's worth the punt the clubs taking.

Worst case scenario he's not good enough for our NSW Cup team and he asks for a release and best case scenario is he's a great player and takes someone spot in first grade. No risk what so ever, especially when you consider a second rower on Chris Lewis has been playing centre for the cutters lately.

And the rationale for losing Packer and Dugan and not signing a player in return? I'd say you're right but it's sad that even the Cutters are more proactive and competent than the Dragons.

Come on guys. Just because he's a depth signing doesn't mean he's next in line.
Have you seen Dodd play first grade yet? How about Nona? Thompson? Hind or Lewis? What about Tyrone McCarthy, the bloke we all got excited about, he's been here for 24 months and hasn't played a single game in first grade.

The standout young players will force their way up the pecking order if they're good enough. As I said before, we've lost KFFL and Dodd.. Thompson's future is still up in the air.. It made sense to add to our centre/wing stocks.

Actually Tyrone McCarthy has played 1st grade for us.....2 or 3 games last year

Shit ur right - try this

Mmmm how many try's tonight? Metres? Tackles? Missed tackles?

Johnston is an express machine that is no doubt, but he needs the right game to play it. It appears tonight was all about the forwards (sound familiar?) and so he was basically ineffective. This is exactly the issue with us signing someone like Johnston, like having a Farrari but leaving it parked in the garage, because that's the Dragons focus on the power game, block plays and pitiful kicking. Yes this may change next year, but the power game will remain.
