Jordan Pereira - New Signing

In case anyone decided to actually use their brains, this is obviously not a signing for first grade.
We've lost KFFL next year and Dodd for this year, Pereira is just coming in for the Illawarra side to solidify our depth.
It's not a Dugan replacement, it's not an "uninspiring signing", it's just for depth. In case anyone had bothered to do any research, all clubs need to have a squad of 30 players next year, so we're obviously building towards that.
Besides, the Pereira announcement was hidden in the Nightingale extension article, so I would say that the club isn't exactly doing somersaults about picking this guy up or claiming he's a world beater.

Some of you need to stop looking for the worst in everything and making assumptions when clearly you have no idea.
So are you saying that NONE of our junior outside backs so urgently signed by Millward prior to this season are not good enough to fill in a reserve grade vacany? You'd think someone like Isaac Lomax would be a least worth testing on the wing or in the centres for Illawarra. Millward's judgment is proving to be very poor on so many levels.

The rationale is this bloke is on minimum wage and Fai Fai most likely wanted to leave in order to get more $$. By all reports he's been dominating in Q Cup this year and it's worth the punt the clubs taking.

Worst case scenario he's not good enough for our NSW Cup team and he asks for a release and best case scenario is he's a great player and takes someone spot in first grade. No risk what so ever, especially when you consider a second rower on Chris Lewis has been playing centre for the cutters lately.

Exactly hes a illawarra signing not a nrl signing.

He looks like a Peter Matautia like signing. I guess with Dugan, FaiFai Loa Glymin and Nona not being around next year we need to sign some older and more experienced backs. It seems
strange to let Nona go when Hutchison is out and McCrone is not up to the task. Where is the back up in the halves?
Exactly, and Hutch still has not been signed for 2018. We have plenty of outside backs and potential fullbacks in the lower grades and so I really don't understand this depth signing.

In 2018 I expect Field to be 6 in reserve grade and maybe Payne to be halfback - re-uniting the U20s halves combination of Field and Payne.

We need to identify a fullback for first grade and a prop to replace Packer. A big no nonsense starting prop to partner Vaughan. Ah Mau and one or two of the young props in waiting - Lawrie and/or Kerr would be in the prop rotation off the bench.

On Zero Tackle only 25 of the 40 players on NRL contracts for 2017 are on contract for 2018. I would consider that there will be some external recruiting as probably not all the replacement players will come from the Under 20's which is a young team. What do others think?

One semi final appearance (for one loss) in 5 years.

Yes you're right, the club is in good hands. Need to stop looking for the worst.

Objective View

That is completely irrelevant to the discussion at hand. We're talking about a younger player who has signed to play for Illawarra.

You just proved my point.

Yes, some of our juniors will play NSW Cup next year. We will probably lose guys like Dodd, KFFL, Dee etc and they will make way for Garrick, Lomax and guys like that.

Be careful throwing around Lomax's name in that light though. You're forgetting he's actually still eligible for SG Ball. The right thing to do would be to ease him in and let him earn in, not rush him in and hand it to him on a silver platter. He's a good player but he's not quite there yet.

Younger player? He's 24! If he was any good he'd have played at least a minute of first grade by now!

24 is still very young Benny. Do you know a guy called Cody Walker? He was a late bloomer and now look at him.
We need to fill a squad of 30-36 players and we're going to lose a few of those players at the end of this year, so honestly what is wrong with this signing? He's not blocking anyone's path, in fact no-one has ever even seen him play. If guys like Lomax, Garrick, Herbert etc are good enough they will knock this guy down the pecking order anyway.

In this age of NYC and so establish reserve grade, 24 is not that young. Sure, there are exceptions but there's also a shit tonne of status quo.
The issue isn't with the signing per say, it will be whether or not he stands in the way of young players who actually have a future with St George. Nice to say that if youngsters are good enough they'll play, that's not always the case with us!

He actually sounds like an impressive individual, looks strong, NOT SLOW and very enthusiastic.
He's the type Mary would give a go to more so than one of our juniors.
MacDonald, Aitken and Lafai might be looking over their shoulders?
He's certainly served an apprenticeship.
Who knows ?

This kid will hopefully not read the crap on this forum.

He looks better than useless and it would be nicer to welcome him and wish him well instead of the bagging he has copped from some so far.

Doing so doesn't automatically condone the decision making by the club, which he isn't responsible for...

I hope he's a raging success.

I'm with you ieabread. The forum has been discussing the need for backs and the club has signed one on a short contract.

He's got some size, footwork and a pass and the clubs seems to prefer bigger wingers/centres with a some type of senior experience.

The club doesn't feel the young blokes are ready in the short term, he has been given an opportunity so I hope he delivers on what the club requires.
