I am a FLY with above average language skills (still, I do feel inferior at times so don't post very often).

I was on the wall (or virtual wall as the case may be) at the overnight judiciary committee meeting and heard this:

"Fellas, there was nothing at all in that Vaughan tackle and the officials got it wrong. However in the current climate we could never admit that so let's charge him, impose a nominal fine that the club will not risk fighting, preserve the purity of the NRL's new stance and move on. Win win for all involved. All those in agreement, look into your webcams and say "aye". (unanimous "ayes"). Next......"

Ben Hunt says NRL’s illegal contact crackdown is ‘all over the shop’

Dragons skipper Ben Hunt says the new high tackle crackdown is struggling for consistency as the Red V count the cost of a brutal local derby that has seen their already depleted squad take another massive hit.

The Sharks left Kogarah with a gripping 13-12 win in golden point, but all the talk was on the head-high blitz as three more players were sent to the sin bin, while another eight were placed on report.

Paul Vaughan was the only Dragon sent to the bin for a glancing blow on Sharks centre Will Chambers, while Cronulla duo Josh Dugan and Mawene Hiroti spent 10 minutes off the field even though their tackles appeared more forceful.

The stop-start nature of the contest frustrated the players, but Hunt was more concerned with the high tackle interpretations as the NRL tries to enforce black and white rules for a very grey area.

“You hear the ref and you think ‘geez, what now?’” he told NCA NewsWire.

“It’s a bit confusing out there because you’re guessing half the time.

“You hear a whistle and you don’t know if someone is going to be sent for 10 minutes, sent off or not sent at all. It’s pretty hard at the moment and I don’t actually know what to say about it because it’s pretty confusing for everyone.

“They are really enforcing these rules, and it’s up to the NRL to find consistency because we’re not there yet. They have to find a way to make it more consistent because to me, it feels like it’s all over the shop.”

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin fired up at the fact Hiroti wasn’t marched for his shot that knocked Cody Ramsey out of the game, saying the hit would have been a send off under the interpretations at Magic Round.

And as Hunt says, simply putting a label on a tackle won’t clear up the confusion when every hit should be judged on its merits.

“As far as I know, if it’s a direct shot to the head then it’s 10, and then if they deem it’s direct with force then I think it’s meant to be sent for the game,” he replied when asked if he understood what constituted a sin bin.

“But how are any of our tackles not with force? You’re using force in every tackle you make and there were a few shots that seemed pretty forceful and direct to the head (against Cronulla).

“We lost Cody for the game but their player only spent 10 in the bin. It’s confusing.”

The crackdown has already seen the Red V hit hard with Josh McGuire, Mikaele Ravalawa, Tyrell Fuimaono and Tariq Sims suspended last week, and they have more concerns with three more players placed on report on Friday.

That’s on top of a shoulder injury to Matt Dufty, who could be joined in the casualty ward after St George Illawarra had three players fail their HIAs.

The setbacks come at a horrible time for the club who would have been banking on six competition points given they face the bottom three teams over the next three weeks.

“The first thing we’ve got to do is work out who’s available and then try to assemble a team. We’ve got to get on with life because this is rugby league and we’ve got to do a job, no matter who gets picked,” Hunt said.

“It’s frustrating, but we can’t make excuses because everyone has injuries and suspensions, so we just have to get on with life. Everyone who comes in just has to do their job.”

I'm itching to watch a roosters, souths or storm game and see how things are interpreted. Last week they all benefited from the rules and were all complimentary. Griffin and Hunt making some noise but will be interested to see if someone they actually care about speaks out against it and how the NRL reacts.

I for one am happy to see him speak out about the new rules. Probably makes us even more of a target but it's a matter of principle.

"You hear the ref and you think 'geez, what now?'"
- Ben Hunt

That sums it up. We're not talking about the game anymore, it's all about the officials.

And "confusing" is the new buzzword. Pretty sure we know what that's code for.

Yep,

Its beyond a joke now.

I watch games and wait for that stupid screeching sound of " 6 again ".

The refs and the bunker, as you say, are the centre of attention.

I really don't know what was so wrong with our game, that it has come to this .

The bias against the Dragons is unbelievable at all levels of the game everyone here can see it, but it is awful quite elsewhere funny I can hear crickets

Let’s watch Latrell tonight and see what the grub does and if anything comes from it. Vlandys who I admired for last years efforts during covid has totally ruined the game. Some of the penalties like Vaughan’s were ridiculous. His big talk was it’s what the public want. Well Peter let me tell you. The public want a game of rugby league. Not a game which I can’t even describe other than being rubbish. How about you listen to that instead of your yes man Abdo giving us false stats. It’s not about you and your voice buddy. Like you said the game belongs to the fans who pay via subscription or Gaye money to watch and enjoy.

You just know the finals will be marred by this. Imagine a Suali or a Cleary or a Munster go high in a prelim. The twists and bends of the powers that be will come out in force to make sure they aren't suspended just like Slater a few years back. And that will be when I switch off forever.

Problem solved:

Allow me to unveil the new playing strip for the "Extremely Northern Melbourne Dragons".

New club motto: no suspensions, no salary cap, no worries.

Would you believe me if I said a certain ex bulldog who once played for us did the review of our game before a game of golf this morning.

This certain person should not be allowed anywhere near our club.

The NRL has made a big PR deal about head-contact crackdown - but has no real desire to enforce this against its protected species clubs Storm/ Roosters/ Souths/ Broncos etc.

Hence, the NRL has to find itself an easy-target club, and use them to set an example - both for on field dismissals and judiciary suspensions. Cue the Dragons, who's mgt never offers any resistance to NRL. True to form, we perpetuate our subservient status by not fighting any charges and taking early guilty pleas.

Our season is decimated more than any other club from this NRL "initiative". We will be the NRL's whipping-boys for the rest of this season unless we put our foot down.

Two shoulders to the head from Radley. Rava got three weeks for one to the head and then two weeks more for a shoulder to the waist.

Hope someone keeps him honest. Last time Radley got let off completely.

Radley's head shot on Pengi Jr every bit as bad as Foui's. let see how the NRL handle this.

It is so hard watching footy at the moment.

I hate both the Broncos and Roosters, but even as a non-fan of these 2 teams I’m frustrated watching this.

Don’t think I have it in me to watch the Raiders/Storm.

I know that I have said it before , but the NRL and their new crackdown is being run by a pack of fools and what is worse - as one could imagine - is that it was thought up by a pack of A-holes .

Trumpeted by the rorters coach Robinson and his sidekick Tedesco . E- gad ! A thought has just occurred to me , you don’t think that this perhaps was the NRL’s response to stop the rorters from squawking ?

A-holes the lot of them !
