Junior Development and Reward for Clubs

When is the last time you heard anyone say anything about flegg at all? Not least because flegg was replaced by the 20s nearly a decade ago. And the point I was making was that IF concessions existed for u18s it would encourage clubs to do it.

Ffs dont get pedantic, you knew what I meant when I said flegg. There's a salary cap in place for under 20s and, again, young kids rarely move clubs.

But they would if you gave clubs more incentive to sign them while they were u18. Did you miss that point both times? Not that it's about moving clubs it's about clubs signing other clubs' juniors. Not exactly the same thing.

Yeah I read that and chuckled...

I wonder how much he cared about the years of development the Warriors put in to Elijah Taylor before they trumped the Warriors offer to get him to go to Penrith.

How about the years of development the Sharks put in to Tyrone Peachey before Gus offered way over what Cronulla would pay an U20's player.

I get the feeling the whole article is Gus having a giant whinge because the RTS deal just raises the stakes when they have to do a deal with Matt Moylan.

All his talk about the percentage RTS will take up of the Warriors cap is nonsense... And quite frankly none of his business... The Warriors are effectively giving RTS the money Tomkins was receiving... Which I don't think many Warriors fans would actually mind...

The Warriors develop more talent than most clubs... Surely if they want to go out and spend money to bring in a key player they can do so without being criticised by another clubs quasi-CEO

Jabba is virtually defending the right to buy a premiership without the hassle of nurturing more players than necessary. He's defending not only poaching of established NRL quality players but just those that may become elite

In a distorted fashion he almost gets my vote, I'd rather see players like DCE whom most people see as exceptional sell their bodies, test the water or secure their future. I'm only interested in clubs who introduce players to the NRL having an advantage if they desperately want to keep them.

All that matters imo is the Roosters should be allowed to pay RTS 25% more than any other club without penalty in the cap, if another offer is outrageous so be it. Most clubs with a proper coaching regime would be satisfied with a 25% head start, RTS would probably be worth a 25% pay rise to Robbo but he doesn't need him that badly to match the Warriors offer . . . the Rooster's coach is far more adept at nurturing talent

The best clubs know how to find talent, nurture it to the standard required and should be allowed a concession to keep doing it . . . unless we think 16 Gus Goulds is the answer . . . then how does the talent appear, by stork

NRL should fund clubs u18 and u20 programs.trade off would be a national draft players could nominate for at 19/20. Let's see how happy Gus would be then lol.

The issue I have is RTS was the hottest property in Auckland Rugby Union/League.

He had already been playing in the Blues development squad and was a star for the NZ Schools Team in RU.

The kid was well and truly already destined to be a superstar in either RU or RL... The Roosters trumped Auckland Rugby and the Warriors by offering to move his father over to Sydney and get him in to work. I'm not going to argue that they haven't put time and development in to the kid... They clearly have... But he was well integrated in to the NZ rugby system.

But the kid is moving back home after 3 years.... It's hardly like we're talking about a kid like Taumalolo who's been at the Cowboys for nearly a decade...

I see waqa blake had a good game for the panthers yesterday. Gus doesn't sem to mind picking up players from other development systems.

So it's every other club's fault the Roosters decided to set up shop in an area with no kids playing league?

What does that have to do with anything . . . besides the fact in 1908 every club was within a train ride of the bridge

Does Parramatta have the right to every youngster born within its boundaries and deny those they don't have room for to anyone else

Clubs want top echelon players? . . . go and find them wherever they be before anyone else grabs them . . . one day the NRL may reward the effort and clubs that are better practiced at it will prosper

Would Gould have written that article if Taumololo signed with the Warriors?

I say no

Or maybe those kids will be developed by AFL, given they are the one's devoting MASSIVE amounts of resources to the area, whilst our ARLC leaves the Canberra Raiders to try and fight off the war chest of the AFL on their own...

Our development officers in the Riverina are being out numbered 5-1, minimum, the Raiders are being out gunned by the AFL war chest... and the ARLC are seemingly doing nothing about it.

you think you are on your own at penrith we are up against AFL soccer and union with no help at all from the nrl

What career path did he have before the Panthers stepped in? Who loses out from him signing with Penrith?

I bet that will just happen to be emailed to Moylan a few days before he starts negotiating his new contract.

It's got nothing to do with Moylan. He's recently extended his contract a further 2 years after this year. Gus may not even be at Penrith when renewal time comes.
He's a journo FFS. It's what he gets paid for, opinions and words.

That's the whole point though... He's not just a Jurno... He has a senior position at a football club.

Like I stated earlier... He talks all this rubbish about the years of development clubs put in to players... Did he stop and think about the years of development the Warriors put in to Elijah Taylor before Penrith came in and offered a bigger offer to Taylor??

And he talks about the percentage of the Warriors cap RTS takes up,.. What's that any of his business?? What the Warriors do with there cap is there business... How would he like it if Wayne Bennett came out and started commenting on how much cap space Trent Merrin is taking up next year?? He would be pissed...

Yeah na. I doubt that Gus would give a rat's if Bennet wrote a column about the Merrin situation. Everyone else has had their say.
Yeah, he had to import some players (Taylor, Segs, Sowie etc.) to get Penrith out of the deep shit they were in, but he has a genuine plan to concentrate on producing first graders. Even if they don't win another comp for 30 years, his real legacy will be a top 25 made up of mostly Penrith juniors. It'll take time, but he's not just talking rubbish. The systems are already in place and will continue post-Gus.

Edit- I think Gus does a pretty good job of keeping his media and club commitments separate.
