Tigers taking risk
The Wests Tigers are on the charm offensive after being slapped with a huge fine for a salary-cap breach.
Here is a small tip for the club – you are entering dangerous territory with threats to take your salary-cap breach to the courts. We have learnt two things about the NRL’s integrity unit over the last five years. They are painfully slow and unbelievably thorough. I’ve had some direct dealings with them in recent years and they are an impressive operation. In fact, they never lose.
I have been given some insight into the Sharks and Tigers cases. It seems clear to me that the NRL has a mountain of evidence against both clubs.
The Sharks immediately accepted the decision. They shifted their focus to putting a strong team on the field in 2019. In the process, CEO Barry Russell has been described as a shining light in the game. Someone who puts integrity before winning.
But the Tigers followed the same path taken by Parramatta and Manly when they were hit with salary-cap breaches. They thumped their chests and said they would get the decision overturned.
History shows that the Eels and Sea Eagles both failed. So will the Tigers. The real question the club should be asking is who else knew about the Robbie Farah deal and why they didn’t report it to the salary-cap auditor.
Chairwoman Marina Goprides herself on her governance expertise. But I understand eyebrows were raised around the ARL Commission table when they were briefed on the integrity unit’s case against the club.
Instead of engaging lawyers Go should be asking why the NRL could not get its hands on Farah’s ambassador contract and why it was even kept from officials at the club. We are all interested to know why the club took him on as an ambassador while seeking salary cap relief because they couldn’t keep him at the club because of his “damaging conduct”.
Farah has shown considerable class defending Justin Pascoe, especially when the club was trying to describe Farah as a liability. Sometimes it is better to admit fault, apologise to your fans and move forward. Like the Sharks have done.
