To be pop, music needs to be simple and basically devoid of ideas and talent.
That's what makes it pop and it's why it is aimed at 14-year-old girls, which is the primary target market. They're the ones that will both buy the singles and also quickly move on to buy the next release too once they get sick of the crap they bought last week.
For the most part they have short attention spans and lack the ability to have any genuine thoughts about the music other than "hey that sounds cool, I like that". Thus, pop has gone become increasingly crap over the years.
It wasn't always like that, but then pop has only become it's own established genre over the past 10-15 years. Before that, in the 1980s, it was a wide range of music - much of it very good - that happened to be popular and was therefore dubbed pop.
