Ken Irvine set to be dethroned?

Messages

If he played on the left wing back in 2018 and 2019, he'd be a lot closer. Robert Jennings scored 20 odd tries in that Seibold year FFS. AJ probably could have got 40

Really? A bit of hyperbole there mate.

Considering Dave Brown set the first grade record for tries in a season in 1935, which is 38 tries (from 15 games I might add) no one has even come close to it since let alone during the NRL era when more games are played.

AJ is a very good winger no doubt, but 40 in a season? LOL.

Here are some stats regarding try scoring:
PositionNameTriesGamesTries Per gameGames to Score 212 at Current RateAdditional Playing Years to Top List (Assume 20 games per season)
1Ken Irvine2122360.902360
2Bill Slater1903230.593612
3Steve Menzies1803490.524124
4Brett Morris1762760.643333
5Andrew Ettingshausen1653280.504225
6Terry Lamb1643500.474536
7Brett Stewart1632330.703044
8Alex Johnston1591850.862474
If AJ plays 20 games per season and scores at his current rate, he should topple Irvine by as early as late in the season of 2025, or early season 2026.
BTW- AJ's strike rate (tries per game) is unbelievable, and second only to Irvine. For a reference, Nathan Blacklock had a strike rate of 0.85.

All the above are FG games only in the Sydney/ARL and/or NRL comps.

Thought it was quite Clear hyperbole to point out how average Robert Jennings is vs AJ. Of course he wouldn't have scored 40 tries.

Maybe 38.

AJ's strike rate as a winger is 1.10 - 136 tries from 124 games. If he maintains this rate, he'll reach 212 tries in game 234.

NRL Leading Try Scorers - 2020-22*

1. Alex Johnston - 76 tries (63 games)
2. Josh Addo-Carr - 54 tries (62 games)
=3. Maika Sivo - 41 tries (50 games)
=3. Kyle Feldt - 41 tries (55 games)
=5. Ryan Papenhuyzen - 39 tries (47 games)

It's an absolutely ridiculous run he's on.

Where did you get that from? It was well-publicised over the week-end that he drew level with Hasam El Masri and Matt Sing over the week end when he scored his 159th try, and NRL.com (https://www.nrl.com/players/nrl-premiership/rabbitohs/alex-johnston/) lists the following:
1659921076587.png
159 tries in 185 games = 159/185 = 0.86 tries per game. I've looked at the average over his career so far, not what he's scored in his last 124 games.

Agree he's on a ridiculous run, and if it continues, he'll break Irvine's record in about 44 more games, or 229 in total. The last one is a big "if".

Click on the 'Position' tab at the bottom

136 tries from 124 games on the Wing
22 tries from 59 games at Fullback
1 try from 2 games on the Interchange bench

Right. Didn't see that you stated in your original post "AJ's strike rate as a winger is 1.10 - 136 tries from 124 games".

Wow. Even more impressive.

Thanks for the corrections.

Only thing is the type of winger AJ is, once he loses that touch of extra speed the tries will dry up quick. Happened to Merritt overnight

For AJ it's about getting the record before that happens. Probably before he is 30

Cody going off the cliff form wise is more of a worry.

A nuffy like Rennings scored a ton of tries and he's a career reserve grader.

AJ has the footy nous to position himself well like Brett Morris did for the Roosters.

He already lost his top shelf speed after his last hammy tear. Merritt finished his career in the middle of wrestle mania which didn't help him. AJ is a different player in that it's all timing and positioning, whereas Merritt was pure instinct.

I do hope AJ gets to 200. Not since Hazem have I cared so much about an individual career statistic.

I've had my criticisms of Cody but he is such an instinctive player he will be making it work for a few more years to come, even if he is altering his game to do it. Low injury rate and a late debutant means he still had the legs in him

Cody is an interesting one because of his late age debut he is really only just getting into the mature years of his NRL development where it all comes together for a half. He has been playing 2 years less than Munster, Mitchell Moses

Alex Johnston is now up to equal sixth all-time, on 164 tries.

He is in his 9th season of first grade. All 6 players equal or above him played at least 16 seasons.

He only passed 100 tries in the final regular season match of 2020 - he's scored 64 tries in his last 48 games. 81 tries since the start of 2020.

Ridiculous, unprecedented numbers.

I won't have Bmoz derided for any reason. He was a wonderful winger who scored a thousand tries he had no right to.

"Unprecedented numbers"?! Really?! Brian Bevan with his 796 career tries in 696 games across a 18 year career in Australia and the UK (when UK league was head and shoulders above Australia) laughs at that. Bevan scored 44 tries in his first season in the UK playing for Warrington. Bevan was the best try scoring winger ever, and is the only rugby league player in both the Australian and English Rugby Leagues Halls of Fame.

Alex is a darn fine winger, no doubt, but go easy on the hyperbole mate :)

Where's the derision? I stated that after he lost his speed his positioning and guile kept him a top class winger.

Unprecedented numbers in the Sydney competition/NSWRL/ARL/NRL... you know, the competition we are talking about.

I’ll raise you a Nathan blacklock

1998 played 22 scored 20
1999 played 26 scored 24
2000 played 26 scored 26
2001 played 28 scored 27

That was an amazing run. And way more fun to watch than Johnson’s.
