Kerry Packer gone

Kerry Packer was in life for whatever he could get out of it. As far as beating his charity giving drum, well he only donated when they/affliction directly effected him.

There are far more people in this country deserving of the tag "great Australian" than a neocon like Kerry Packer.

Chook.

People are sad, twisted and bitter because they don't agree with you? Because they don't think it's a tragedy that Kerry Packer died? Or because they don't agree with your perception of Packer's acheivements?

Kerry Packer's influence on Australia's on the television landscape is undeniable. I fail to see how that makes him a better Australian than you or I; especially given his motivation was the almighty dollar.

May he R.I.P and his family find solace.

You or I havent done for the australian public, in particular the australian sporting public, what Kerry Packer did. You or I, although we may both have donated, have not donated nearly as much as Kerry Packer did.

No millionaire is or will ever be completely cleaned skinned but IMO for all the bad he may have done, the positive influence he had far outweighed the negative, i think its bitter and twisted to hold some of those bad against him given that. But i guess everyone is entitled to their opinions so who am i to critise?

Glad to know that, unlike Kerry Packer, you spend your live giving to others.

Which shelter did you work in on Christmas Day?

Do a poll asking 20 million Australians if they'd rather have had Kerry Packer or You or I attend their birthday party.

I'd be surprised if the majority would want a corpse at their party.

The thing about Kerry Packer is, he didn't help the sporting public out of the goodness of his heart. Kerry Packer's motivation was Kerry Packer. That's why I don't classify him as a great Australian. There are many unsung heros who sacrifice far more for this country.

BS it's tall poppy syndrome. The point is, whatever Kerry Packer did for Australia, he got 10 times that OUT of it. There's no problem with that, good luck to him. However, it doesn't leave him a great Australian.

Hello? Are some of you not sure which way is north?

You say while he was helping others at the same time he was able to help himself ten times as much? That alone should start to ring a bell.

He was clever, shrewd, ruthless if need be, had a huge set of balls, basically was running Australia, exactly what does one have to achieve to be considered great?

what did he get outta this?

Nor did it obviously soften him, although he generously pledged millions to help equip all NSW ambulances with the "Packer whackers", or heart starters, that had saved his life. Less than a week after his brief death he was back at the polo again.

Geez alright you take any sporting identity and show me how they have helped the sporting public with the goodness of there heart??

he poured millions into cricket same as the ARL and a bucket load of money into polo in australia england and argentina...

Cricket would be nothing these days without him...

What he did with ambos was great, pity there wasn't more of it.

Look, i'm sorry but there is no way I will ever see Packer as a great Australian. To me a great Australian is one who makes sacrifices for this country; whether they be small or large. To me, Packer doesn't fit into that category.

I actually wonder about this statement that cricket would be nothing without Kerry Packer. It's an assertion pedalled by Channel 9 in particular that isn't necessarily consistent with reality.

Anyway, each to his own. Those who want to adulate Kerry Packer on what a fine human being he was may do so. Just don't expect everyone to join in.

well take it this way if cricket was in the same state it was back then as it is now there would be alot more soccer or netball players going around.. cricket was boring he revolutioned the way it was played... day nighters etcs..

its going through another stage now with 20/20 changing the way it is played...

so doing something great doesnt fit him into a great australian to you??

i doubt he cares if he is remembered as a great australian or not, just being remembered is enough...

To me, being a great Australian includes being a great person and ambassador for the country. I don't think Packer fits into either of those categories. But I suggest we agree to disagree.

Horses for courses and each to their own.

In the stage of world history and australian history, when we fall off the perch 99.99 % of us will be considered insigniciant little arseoles .....

The Press is mightier then the sword.

i have my own opinion of the and I will leave it at that.

ultimately he had smaller pockets than castle rupie, the good losing to scum
and by good include a massive dose of self interest
sad for the family, he did great thinks for cricket
his league leagacy to me is mixed

the greater tragedy will be if the idiot son [who now has a real reason to cry]
sells channel 9 to castle rupie
add telstra selling its share of foxtel to .........rupie?

and rugby league is still in the bush, lost and covered in mozzie bites

League is still ignored outside its heartland and Cricket is still as boring as ever.

Sorry Kez, I don't think you were were trying too hard. The landscape still looks the same to this non billionaire pleb.

I am not insulting the man or his many achievements but his "innovations in sport" were to provide a package for TV consumers.

I do take my hat off, despite the man's wealth for the thoughfulness to provide the "Packer Whackers", anonymously donate a car to some guy on talk back radio who had his stolen prior to his wedding and most of all pulling Doug Mulray off while he was on national TV....

Not many billionaires can say they have done THAT
