The defence in 1st grade was already disgusting as was the attack

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that many supporters would have been prepared to have a player with the pace of Tamale irto score a try out there instead of the slow poke poor tackling Feagai’s etc.

Now you’re telling me that Lawrie was a better option than R Couchman or blooding Tuitavake or at least seeing if anything further could be done with Fafitta ?

Ffs Anybody was an upgrade on Feagai’s and Lawrie
So its true, you obviously did not watch KOE Cup. Alec and Fifita has less of a motor than mud guts for 1st grade. We had little to replace 1st grade, both Couchmans played late last year and Yes i would prefer them but Toby is not yet a current middle as bit slender and Ryan developed his game to get a shot but he is not a walk up starter like Toby.
This off season will sort them out.
We are trying to get rid of mud guts but the club extended him a while ago thinking he was a fringe NSW blue..or so somebody thought (probably journo) and the club fell for it and so did Lawrie.

You seem to contradict yourself a bit re Toby C
“Toby is not yet a current middle”
“Ryan is not a walk up starter like Toby”

Regardless of what happened in KOE cup it was blatantly obvious that 1st grade received plenty of beltings and had several woeful second half collapses and a message should have been sent early to say it was unacceptable.

The fact was players should have been dropped the unknown was how the replacements would have gone.

So to say the assumption they wouldn’t be better so don’t pick them is a better outcome than the fact that the incumbents were pitiful is not how I think nor is it how I think the coach should think especially when on the few occasions the pitiful 1st graders did play KOE Cup they didn’t dominate their either.

Anyway new season coming up and the 3 senior signings will bring much needed stability and professionalism and fingers crossed for a half and a prop that compliments them.

Unlike peptide Shane
You seem to be a little sensitive to criticism of Ryles. Is it bcs he has not only never coached an NRL side, he has not even coached NSW Cup? Or under-fives. He has no premierships in any grade of football. He is best known not for his footy acumen, ability to recognize and develop talent, or man management - he has shown no sign of any of these - but for his dopey, on-field brain explosions.

Yet you have signed him for four years.

Four years. Your pain is only just beginning.

Jason was a warrior for our club and the criticism of him is mightily unfair. He was a passionate, elite front rower and unfortunately the refs watched him like a hawk. I think he will be a good coach. Time will tell. He is a true Dragon, regardless that he has earned his coaching stripes under Bellamy, and Robinson. Always gave his all for this club.

Expertly put.

I wish we had one like him now.

Well, the visitor said he was here for banter. But Ryles was in fact a penalty magnet and my criticism of his potential as a novice NRL coach still stands. He has no experience, no achievements and zero qualifications for the job.

I do not know why on earth Parra chose him - can anyone explain it? - but from my point of view as a dragons follower, they have made the perfect choice.

Ryles was the JWH of his time except the refs were tougher and tbph even more biased

Tough, uncompromising, skilful and put the opposition pack on notice.

If Bennett had of been coaching then we would have won 2 or 3 comps with Ryles a centrepiece of the team.

Parra picked him because he is the obvious choice of all that is available.

Ryles is no dummy otherwise he wouldn’t have held the jobs he has under the best coaches going round.

I loved him as a player (sure he was more than capable of a brain fart but all the best players have that in them) and I wish him well as a coach.

Agree with many of your posts maestro but can't agree on your love for Ryles as a player. Was dumb as dog poo and was always good for a game changing penalty or dropped ball. There was a reason Bennett was happy to let him go and sign someone better and smarter. To me Ryles was so very representative of the reason why those star studded teams in those years never went on to win a comp. They were all very talented but very dumb when it came to footy smarts and crucial moments.

Here's a quote from the man himself after losing us a game against the Sharks in golden point back in 2008.

“One penalty all game and it stood out like dog’s balls and lost us the game.” St George Illawarra villain Jason Ryles summed it up perfectly after he gave away a soft penalty in just the second minute of golden point extra time that led to Luke Covell’s 41m goal and Cronulla’s 18-16 NRL win at ANZ Stadium.
Ryles was penalised for lying on Sharks fullback Brett Kearney too long in the tackle and Covell duly slotted the long range effort from in front of the posts.

Considering- we’ve done real well so far.
Including getting rid of Hunt.
We need to get a halfback - one who has a few good k’s under his belt.
Then we need a few forwards to put into rotation.
We are in for the right in 25.
Sloan will do some time on the wing then he’ll start to blossom.
Su and Holmes are the only marks for origin
Gutho missed that boat. - sorry
8 yeah - any further will decide on the dogs and the storm.
Panthers have to turn a bit around
Parra nah.
Roosters bubble is about to pop.
Souths nah walker has past his best.
Too many new ways.
We’ll be in amongst the QLD clubs.
Broncos will come home with a wet sail as Madge stamps his authority
We are looking okay.

Agree he was a warrior , but he also did a lot of dumb things, some of which you cant cloak under the banner of passionate. As for being a good coach time will tell, I know we have a good one in Flanno and if someone is going to come into this forum from another club sprouting about peptides then expect no mercy.

I have no idea if Ryles will be a good coach or not, I’m sure he has potential after his apprenticeship.
But one thing is for absolutely sure, he was one of the dumbest and most frustrating players to ever don the jersey. Brain snap after brain snap. He was a coach killer, couldn’t stand him.

Because of his brain snaps and giving away penalties, I can remember Ryles playing in a Charity Shield game and after all of his snaps, fumbles and penalties he was taken off and he got such a booing off from the Dragons fans. He rightly deserved it.

Agree, but would you have done if he ended up being our coach ?

I'm glad we have Flanno over Ryles as I believe Flanno is in the top 4 coaches in the NRL. However, even though he did give away a lot of dumb penalties, he was a powerful alpha that meant our pack was always in every battle and we won more games than we lost. I'd love that sort of pack again. Willie Mason trash talking our pack was probably the most embarrassing thing I have witnessed as a Dragons tragic. Never would have happened in Rylesy's era.

How many on here wouldn't welcome a Jason Ryles type into our team right now.? JWH did just as many dumb things as Ryles if not more. NAS probably does more dumb things. Same with Hertherington and Horsborough. Tino also does a lot of stupid things, but I'd suggest, every one of the ones I have mentioned waltz straight into our team and become crowd favourites. Michael Weyman was similar as was Neville Costigan and Beau Scott, but we all love them. Every successful team needs a JWH/Ryles/NAS type.
