Silly. We can have both Origin and regular internationals for all teams. It's just they won't do it. And this is every damn nation, not just Australia.

There's also no point harming the game in Australia in an attempt to strengthen it in NZ. Origin is still our most popular event and one of our keys to spread the game to other parts of the country.
State of origin has become a behemoth. The bigger and stronger it gets the weaker international RL gets with player workloads coming more and more into effect and players opting to represent either NSW or Queensland before other nations.

I disagree. Origin is just a scapegoat. Origin becoming bigger has nothing to do with player workload. It's always been three games. The NRL and the RLPA have far more to do with the lack of internationals than Origin does. Origin's biggest problem is the ridiculous player payments.

Players can represent tier 2 nations as well as play Origin. They only clash one weekend a year. Doesn't affect the end of the year at all. It affects NZ with a few players but that isn't Origins fault entirely - are we supposed to just get rid of Origin altogether because Ponga chooses QLD over NZ?

Easy fix, allow players to play Origin and NZ. If Origin is the pinnacle of the game, then let ALL eligible players play even if they want to play for another nation.

But ideally, NZ should have its own 3 games to line up with Origin anyway, making it impossible to rep both.

I'd like to see Aus v NZ 3 times every year too. They could factor it into the existing and upcoming tournament structures.
Never going to happen unfortunately. Just look at the shoddy treatment the ANZAC test use to get.

Origin one off game annually followed by a 3 test trans-Tasman series for me. Get these tests played in cities like Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch.

And that's similarly never going to happen.

As a rugby league fan of nearly 30 years I sadly know this all to well.

You're barking up the wrong tree mate. Slashing the sport's most watched, most valuable property is no way to build anything.
All rep footy is valuable. The club game needs to step back an inch or two to give more representative rugby league room to breathe.

When the biggest RL game on the planet is a match against 2 rival states and not 2 rival countries like England v Australia or Australia v NZ the sport has and will continue to have problems.

Correct, but you're blaming the wrong thing.
The lack of proper attention given to the international game can't be blamed on Origin.
While it's true that Australia's administrators prioritises Origin too highly, there should be room for both.

There are a lot of reasons why they have gone in the direction they have, and a major one is the typically lopsided results of a small international scene resulting in audience apathy. Origin disappearing wouldn't result in England beating Australia, France and Wales having a resurgence, or the World Cup having more than 3 or 4 nations who could realistically win it.

If you cut Origin, the direction the sport would go in is towards AFL, not towards Rugby Union or Soccer. The biggest game still wouldn't be between 2 countries, it would be between 2 suburbs.

Unless Origin is bigger than England and NZ's national sides in their own country, the World Cup Final should be the biggest game in the world. Origin is the biggest game in Australia, but there should be more fans in the rest of the world that see their national side as bigger than Australia's state sides. If not, then other countries' apathy towards the sport is just as much to blame as Australia's is.
