KK for City

THE City slickers face a play-making crisis ahead of next Friday's annual State of Origin selection trial, with no experienced halfbacks fit to play and captain Robbie Farah tipped to be unavailable because of Kangaroos duty.

In the absence of injured duo Mitchell Pearce (shoulder) and Peter Wallace (knee), the only remaining halfback candidates are tyros Kris Keating and Trent Hodkinson.

The 21-year-olds have only just risen through the junior ranks at Cabramatta together but, with just 38 NRL appearances between them, they are now joint favourites for a shock representative call-up opposite formidable Country pair Todd Carney and Brett Kimmorley.

City's chairman of selectors John Hayes was still coming to grips with the shortage when we contacted him yesterday.

"That's caught us out a bit, so we will have to have a good look and come up with something," Hayes said.

"Both [Keating] and [Hodkinson] are on our list, and there's one other [Scott Porter] who is not playing first grade."

Should the selectors not want to throw either youngster in the deep end, a makeshift half will have to suffice. Farah - named as the Tigers' No.7 yesterday - shapes as the most obvious candidate but sources at ARL headquarters reckon he'll more likely be in Melbourne than Port Macquarie next week.

We've been told Farah is an odds-on chance to make the Australian bench, leaving City with only Braith Anasta, John Sutton and Feleti Mateo as ball-players with previous representative experience.

Lachlan Coote played his junior football at five eighth, but the Panthers flyer is already a shoo-in for fullback at City.

Just having a think about it after reading this, its not inceivable to think that half of our side could be missing...without looking into eligibilities, id say the following are a chance of selection...thank god for the bye

Hayne - certainity for aus or city
FFMM- Kiwis certainty
Inu - Possibility
Kris Keating
Timana Tahu - likely
Joel Reddy
Ben Smith
Feleti Mateo
Justin Poore
Tim Mannah

id say minimum 5 of those guys get picked somewhere

I think it is certian that Hayne and Fui will make the Aus and NZ team resp. IMO Tahu is likley for a country centre spot or Aussie Wing position (more likley country spot). KK, Poore and Smith are likley for country/city teams. Mateo, Inu and Mannah are unlikley but possible IMO.

I wouldnt be surprised if Inu is picked for NZ they are missing Vatuvei so need a back and he was next in line last year, he has some good form to deserve that wing spot,

That's pretty much how I see it. I don't know about Ben Smith though, there's too many backrowers ahead of him. Mannah is more of a chance IMO.

I wouldn't rule out Hindy for a test spot yet either. He did play in the tri nations final win last year and selectors often stick with just about the same side for the ANZAC test the following year.

Your probably right on Bennys chances, I would like to think his form should be repaid. IMO Benny is the type of player that would improve playing in a rep team. He would have learnt alot off Hindy and he could learn alot off guys like Lewis, Watmough, Hoffman and Bird (if they arnt in the Aussie team).

For hindy, its the Aussie team or nothing IMO... u i hope he makes it but no sure atm.
