Knights aren't gone: Kennedy

poetic tragedy

25 July 2004

Ben Kennedy refused to concede Newcastle's 2004 NRL campaign was finished after his blunder in extra time led to North Queensland winning a controversial golden point encounter 28-24 at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

Test and NSW back-rower Kennedy spilt the ball from the restart of the second half of the 10-minute golden point period, allowing Cowboys halfback Nathan Fien to pick up the crumbs and send his skipper Travis Norton over for the easiest of tries.

Is it me, or am I getting deja vu?
I could have sworn Knights have been saying the past 5 losses that they weren't out and they still had what it takes to make it to the top 8. I say stop giving yourselves false hope and just play football. There's a reason why the Knights for the first time since 1996 wont make the finals, and that's because this past year they've been playing like a pack of rabid dogs. There's only so long you can make excuses for, and I am so sick of watching every week and seeing Danny Buderus and/or Ben Kennedy being the only ones trying to step up and do something. They've got nothing anymore and they should finish the rest of the season off with a bit of dignity instead of spouting all this bullshit that they can get there. They can't, so stop trying! (Not that you ever started...)

Give it up BK. You've only got six weeks left in the Reb and Blue...Probably less considering your injury rate.

You need to find yourself a comfy seat at brookie for all the inevitable matches you'll sit out injured.

swing low, if you take just Bucketarse out of Newcastle and we'll do just fine (as evidenced earlier this year when they thrashed Canterbury and pipped Brisbane), but when more experienced players get cut down, there's only so much you can do. On saying that, lately the boys have been a disgrace, they need to pull their finger out and get their arses in line if they're any hope of making the semis. Knights are only 2-3 points out, NOW is the time to do something about it!

They're not gone... but I wouldn't want my money on them to make the 8.

Poetic, I feel for you after first Parra's absence from the semis for a while last year (and this year ) You just want 'em to play their best footy instead of all the talk.

Why does everyone deny they are a one-man team. everyone knows they are, and they can do f*ck-all without joey.
They iunvest all their moneyin one player, who never finnishes a season, always gets injured. then they have no money for developing juniors, who are all kept out of top grade by has-beens. they then go to other clubs(melbourne, parra) become champs, but newcastle are too stubborn to believe it.
newcastle have had their heads in the clouds since 1997. and when they dont win the comp, they say "well, joey was out, so its natural we didnt win". BS. even they admit they are 1 man team.
Newcastles lower grades are shit, there top grade is worse, and i think we are seeing the beginning of the end of the once great club being table-toppers.

Hmm a lot of clubs have a 500,000 dollar player.. We didnt invest all our money on him.

Who did they invest it all on.

Who have the Knights signed.

Knights are gone for 2004. Do the maths.

At best you can win 4 of your last 6. Effectively putting the Knights on 26 points. Not enough to make the top 8. Best start thinking about 2005.

I don't think there are that many Clubs with 500k players?

These Clubs probably do
Knights, Panthers, Roosters [but he's retiring at the end of the season]

Maybe the Dragons have a 500k player? Bronco's might, but then with South East Queensland all to themselves the star Broncos players could afford to be paid less by the Broncos. Tallis could probably play for free next and still earn more than most players, because he'd be big value for individual sponsorhip. Remember, as long as the sponsors aren't also sponsoring the Broncos it wouldn't count under the salary cap. (and thanks to the 'Keep Joey' campaign, the Broncos can now go out and orginise such sponsorships for their players [as can all other Clubs :)])

maybe 5 teams out of 15 have $500k players, maybe-probably less.

There would be a few Clubs with 400k players but there would be a few where their highest payed player/s wouldn't be getting that much.

With a Salary cap of just over $3.5 million, paying an individual player $500,000+ is a big risk. You lose just a little too much in depth (in my opinion ;-)).

Total Crappola. Utter Shite. If you look at Newcastle's results from this season, they have lost most games by a low margin (bar games against the Dragons, the Roosters and North Queensland). If you were to take JUST Bucketarse out of the Knights, with all other players fit and fresh, Newcastle would carry on fine. But every time the Knights have lost Johns, other key players have fallen, too, and that's where the spiral begins. There's no way that Johns is everything- a "one man team" doesn't beat table toppers the Bulldogs and Brisbane without him, do they?
