the question is, can he tackle? As it seems no one else in that league can.

Spoiler alert: He cant.
It's why he didnt last at canberra. Let more tries in than he created

Otherwise he had a great short kicking game, decent to good long kicking game but only an average passing game. And his running game was horrendous.

It's been a long time since he left the NRL so he could have easily improved in the areas that let him down. Be interesting to see how it pans out but i wouldnt be confident tbh. Just read it was a 1 year deal, which makes it a good signing, if he doesnt pan out, you lose almost nothing.

How long do we have Gower for? He was bought basically as a back-up but seemed reluctant when interviewed about playing next year.
I think this will put Roberts back a notch. Might laso make him step up this year if he knows he will be contested next.
The signing places doubts on Gidley ever going back to 7. It's 9, the bench or the road. Might be the latter seeing as how many injuries he has had and the time of his career.

In 2012 Scott Dureau was the best scrum half in Super League (he has played little this year because of recovery from his brain tumour).

Dobson was number 2 or number 3, depending on how you compared him with Craig Gower. Salford's multimillionaire new owner, Marwyn Koukash, tried to sign Dobson but Hull KR would not release Dobson to another Super League club. Dobson was at the centre of everything Hull KR did in attack. Hull KR fans will be gutted by this decision.

This is a terrible decision from the perspective of Craig Gower.

As Misanthrope correctly asked: why did Newcastle sign Gower if they were seriously considering Dobson?

Gower must feel that he has been shafted. I am very disappointed for him.

Given Gower's age and the fact we have no rela hooking options, it could be that he is being used as gap-fill measure and plans to retire.

Gower had a contract with London Broncos that was scheduled to last until the end of 2014. He felt that he had another year of football left in him after this season.

He took a gamble by leaving London for Newcastle because he wanted to play with winners. He even said at the beginning of 2012 that he wanted London to win some silverware. People laughed at that aspiration because London didn't have the player roster to achieve that. Nor did they have the coach. Yet that statement indicated the kind of competitive player he is. He will be deeply disappointed at Dobson's signing. His best prospect for 2014 is St George-Illawarra, or possibly Penrith again? But given his age, he will have to play the house down at Newcastle this year to get a one year contract in 2014 at another SL club. On the other hand, if he does that, he may get another year at Newcastle, perhaps as sub hooker off the bench.

Interesting signing. Not much left to say that hasn't already been said. Hopefully this Tyrone reacts to this in a good way and really aims up.

Didn't we lose Will Smith to Penrith? Tyrone really only has the remainder of the reason to prove his worth and while I'm not fully clear on Gower's contract with us, I do believe he's been brought in to teach Tyrone because if he can simply take off the pressure of structuring our forwards from Mullo, then there really isn't any need to drop him.

At this point, I believe Smith's vacancy will be filled by Dobson. If Tyrone doesn't step up and improve his game, then I think Wayne will switch the two. As for Gower, I'm not too sure.

Interesting signing indeed. He seems like he'll really complement Mullo with his passing and shorting kicking game.

I think Gower still has a role to play at the club. With Bedsy gone there is a veteran spot left in the squad. With Tyrone still being young and inconsistent, on top of the fact that Kidley and Mullen will probably be playing for the Blues next year, he should get at least a half season worth of games. He can play hooker or in the halves or even come off the bench.

Wow, I don't think anyone but Wayne saw this coming, last I heard was there were no funds for a known signing but I guess after Naiqama, Costigan, Hilder, Buderus etc leaving we've found a little room.

Top signing, Dobson has a great short kicking game which Mullen lacks, well is getting much better at, he's got the leadership and creativity, the 2 should go hand in hand. Gower will be gone I reckon but it wouldn't be bad for him to stay and be a backup hooker/half.

6. Jarrod Mullen
7. Michael Dobson
9. Kurt Gidley
14. Adam Clydsdale/Tryone Roberts/Chad Redman/Craig Gower/Travis Waddell

We could punt the last 3 there and try get a quality hooker

He is going great guns for HKR. The club Patto plays for. He can play. Like Jeff Robson he is a reliable and competent pure halfback. I know many people want us to sign superstars but I am a pro quality depth sort of supporter. If we had Gower, Dobson and Tyrone Roberts on our books next season then the options for us are always there. And he is only 27. Hoorah!

Now that I've had time to think about it I can now see that this is a good signing. There's sweet f**k all on the market for next year in terms of halfbacks, and as Gower is 35 and unlikely to go around again we needed another half badly. Whether that's to play halfback or cover for Mullen and Roberts it doesn't matter. With Gids most likely to play hooker next year we have absolutely no depth in the halves. I don't rate Davis in NSW Cup at all.

This wouldn't be an issue if we still had Kelly.

We would have the best halves in the competition right now and more than likely be higher up the ladder right now.

Whoever made the decision over a broken a light needs to be shot as obviously cannot see extraordinary talent.

Trust me, it wasn't over just a broken light at Fannys.

Hindsight is wonderful when it pertains to Kelly isn't it. That bloke up till now has been a disaster. Let's see how he goes when his form inevitably slumps. Half a season of decent football and he is the one that got away. Great work by Cartwright and credit where credit is due, however this is his fourth club. It is more a case of why Kelly let us down after we gave him a chance. Very easy to simplify it as Bennett could not straighten him out.

Yes hindsight is a wonderful thing but we didn't give him much of chance.

He was with us for 2 months and maybe have a bit more patience.

And yes I don't know the real reason for his sacking other the official reason of breaking a light but the kid always had oozes of talent
