Jeez that staring side is pretty strong experience-wise IMO.

Thiaday, Davico, Tanner and Brown were regulars in the FG side last season. Just goes to show the changes Smith has made so far.

Snowden on the bench is a surprise. I thought he would be in training for FG selection when a positon opens up? It is amazing how he seems to have fallen out of favor.

It certainly is good to see a Premier League side with a few guys who could (and have) play first grade at a pinch.

Thaiday, Hinton, Brown, Davico, Tanner, Young, and Snowden have all played first grade before and then there's the likes of Uate, Karawana, Tafua, Natusch, and Tupou who I wouldn't be surprised to see in the team in the next year or two.

I wouldn't read too much into it. I think a lot of the 50/50 first grade selections for round 1 have been based on where players are at in their preperations. The ones who have had the best off-seasons -- injury free lead up, good fitness, strong training and trials form -- have been given the edge. I don't think it tells us how Smithy rates the players in the long term -- and I suspect he'd be keeping an open mind about that anyway.

Yes, I totally agree.

But it just goes to show Smith doesn't play a bloke on his past permances or experience level. He will play blokes on their current form and how disciplined they were in training.

Don't get me wrong when I say this, but Smith has the knack of making selections that will get fans tearing their hair out. If Smith doesn't like a bloke, he will not be in the team. And if he wants another bloke in the team, he will be there, you can guarantee it. Smith makes decsions because he can, he has last say on who runs out onto the field.

Blast me if you want, but it is true. There will be times when we just shake our head and think, "what has gotten into Smith?"

The thing about Smithy is that he works harder and puts more thought into selections than just about any other coach. When he comes up with a selection that seems a total surprise it's because he knows more than we do... he will have watched about million times more video than the average fan, will have specific knowledge about where players are at in their training and with niggling injuries, and will have ideas about how each player is to fit into specific match tactics.

There are already a few little gripes around about Reynoldson being in the run on team. But I can guarantee he hasn't been selected for his good looks. Smithy won't always get things right. He will, however, make his decisions for the right reasons.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

That shiny bald head is quite the eye-catcher.

Personally, I would rather Reyno be in the run-on side than off the bench. His better games were usually when he started with Simmo and Newton.

I know people are going to disagree with me sooo bad here, but technically care factor towards that is about zero. anyways seeing that really sh*ts me, i can see the whole aku case evolving into one similar to that of jarred hayne last year for the eels. smithy wouldn't play him and when Jason Taylor came along and played him he turned into a superstar. another thing that sh*ts me is the fact that thaiday is playing premier league. I could bet my own house that if smithy played kidley at lock and thiaday on the wing and hinton fullback our side would be a major contender for the title. not saying the side he is playing on sunday is a bad side i just think we could of picked alot better a side then the one.

We will just have to wait and see...

But I DO think Aku will get a solid run in the topgrade sooner rather than later. He is just too big a talent to not give the opportunity.

Thaiday should be at fullback.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Kidley at lock, making loads of tackles and running angles off Joey's hip. I'd be glad to see him in the centres, but I think Carmont and Tighe will go well there, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm not willing to say whether or not Uate should be in 1st-grade yet until I see how McManus goes. Surely there's a reason he's impressed Smith so much.

Tell me, if you want Hinton at fullback, Thaiday on the wing, and Uate on the other, who do you want to drop? I assume McManus is one, but which of Carmont, Tighe or MacDougall would you drop as well?

Carmont, i have never enjoyed him much in the centres he is much like polglase a solid player but not a premiership winning player where as hinton and thaiday certainatly have the potential. carmont has had plenty of time to prove me wrong and at times has impressed me, but i just think its time to try something new. afterall the only reason carmont got a run in the first place was because of a horrid injury run to us in 03.

Doogs is pretty injury-prone anyways, touchwood this year is different, but i certainately wouldnt bet money on it. so perhaps dropping carmont would be unneccessary.
