Even though a premiership would make me elated beyond words a small part of me would be shattered for Gids and Snowy. Snowy shouldn't even be suspended and Gids would want a premiership more than anything.
Anyway, the game. I was GOBSMACKED at not just the quality but the attitude of our start. We were flying into everything. We actually looked like a top team such was the quality of everything we were doing. We were even throwing it around from inside our own half! And it was working! Probably unlucky not to get a try before Uate scored even. We had a good plan to stretch them on the edges and wow did we look dangerous doing it.
The McKinnon penalty was a disgrace and an embarrassment to the sport. You could quite easily blame their first try on that call but you could also counter that by saying we should have defended a bit better on our line on that occasion.
Houston's try was lovely work from Mullen and Scott. Even in the tenseness of the match at that point I couldn't help cracking up at Uate blowing kisses to the crowd and we were only 12-4 up .
Hilder's try was opportunistic and not good work from Slater but it's still 6 points and you take it. At 18-4 I was getting pretty confident our defence would be good enough to hold them but they scored that freaky try to Waqa and suddenly I was shitting myself again
I actually think we played some average football there in the second half. Our attack was pretty uninspiring in patches TBH and it just looked like we were trying to close it out. A lot of Mullen's kicking was actually sub-par also.
But we held on and our defence was mostly outstanding. Scott and Smith, I just love those two so much. Houston chipped in with a great knock and McKinnon and Rochow were their usual selves.
Our backline, just wow. Boyd was actually the quietest of the lot but was still fine. Uate and Naiqama were explosive and excellent. Gagai and especially Leilua made such a massive difference for us bringing the ball out from our own end. He was huge. Roberts came of age as a genuine quality first grade 7, brilliant stuff.
How refreshing after so long to see our boys celebrating at the end having won a meaningful game. The way all the players embraced Bedsy, almost brought a tear to the eye.
