Twal, Aloia, Matteson, Doolan, Dargan, Tanginoa and a few others were all spoken about as our best juniors in years as well.
There's no guarantees as we can see

And that's the thing as you've just said they were the best juniors we've had in years, that's how bad our junior system was for such a long time. The best in that lot is probably Matterson who is a decent enough first grader and the worst is Doolan who, even after a change of clubs didn't progress past the 20's. It's taken Kelepi 3 club changes for him to realise what he has. You pointing out those names only strengthens the argument that our junior system didn't have a leader.

No coach is to blame for that either. They probably all had a type of player they wanted brought through the system. Then when they got their plan put into place they either left or got sacked. I know it's hard to not have someone to blame but that's just what's happened unfortunately.

Wake up, when

Stop clutching at straws. What evidence do you have that the development situation is in great shape now.
You're just another excuse maker
SG Ball won the comp last year and the 20s (half of them were only 18) finished top four. A year later they are near certs to make the finals again.

Lol you're telling me to stop clutching at straws? You pointed out 1 grade in 1 year, you're more delusional than I could've ever imagined.

What excuses am I making? It's very obvious that junior development works better when there's a figurehead at a club for many years. As you pointed out the penrith system now has new players coming through each year and then as I pointed out that's because there's gould as a figurehead for 7 years. There was a plan in place for many years and they stuck to it. Same with our club under Brian Smith we had juniors coming through every year because there was a stable leader at the top for many years so a plan was put into place and was stuck with.

Look at our situation from say 2010-2016. We had a lack of stable leadership at head coach from 2007-2013 and as such junior development suffered because no coach, or head of football, could put their junior plan into place and execute it. The worst plan is much better than no plan or changing plan every 2nd pre-season.

It's no coincidence that our best juniors are coming through since we've had a long term coach and a long term junior recruiter alongside them.
It’s especially beneficial for retention.

Why does that mean the system isn't broken?

What other evidence do you have to support that claim?

Perhaps our juniors where just big strong island kids who develop earlier. But when hit 20 fade put.

This is true. Talked up big time
I don't recall many on here talking up anyone as a decent FG'r except Kelepi and that was after he debuted.
There was talk Dargan and Doolan were the best young halves we had seen in a while and there was hope they would make it, but it was just hope, and it was nothing like the talk around for Dylan Brown.

I can’t see Cayless teaching the young guys the tricks of the trade to be able to advance juniors to first grade. He’s just not good enough. Nice guy though.

Think Joey Grimma has that specific role as a “Skills coach”, so players across all grades are developing the relevant skills. Think he talks about it on his interview on TCT.

Dargan talked up
Doolan not
But Dargan in last year with us was reclining.

GL also talked up big time

How many games did Dargan play as the chief playmaker for Wenty in preparation for an NRL call-up? (Honest question cause I don't know the answer).

And every time GL is mentioned as a potential NRL player, his deficiencies in defence get mentioned - that is not talking someone up 'big time'.

There's no numbers I can find for the amount of games he played in ISP last year but from memory he played from about mid-April to just before the finals. So at the most he played 20 games in reserve grade, but he definitely didn't play that many. In these games he had either Fogarty, who was trash, or Robson. For the most part I don't think he was the dominant half. The main thing was that when he went back to the 20's he didn't dominate like expected and for mine our best halves in the NYC last year were Dylan Brown and Joe Taipari.

You probably know more than any of us about how our juniors are travelling in relation to NRL readiness. Did you ever see Dargan as being someone who was getting close to NRL?

My recollection of Dargan is that when Nolan looked over our junior halves back in 2014/15 there were none and the only 2 he recognised as being possibles (not probables) were Dargan and Doolan. That's why they were given some attention, not because they were seen as the next P. Sterlings.

I did in 2015 and a bit in 2016 when he played in the NYC and in previous years before that in lower grades. He had an unreal kicking game and running game that I thought he was for certain going to be an NRL player. There's still no reason, talent wise, why he can't make first grade. He needs to work on his defensive positioning and mindset even in attack he wanted to go for the miracle play to score a try when he needed to play percentages.

I reckon Greg Louganis will still play NRL. Yeah his defence is pretty shit but not really that much worse than Semi, Vatuvei, Uate, Nofoaluma, Rapana and any number of less memorable names, but his offensive potential would put him within reach of top 32 wingers in game. f**k if he just marks his man, he'd be a better defender than any of our other wingers.

That said salary cap rules could also work against him ever playing NRL
