Knock-on Effect NSW Cup - Eels Team

I reckon he might be our first choice backup fullback but has slipped a rung or two as a backup winger. And I'd say the most plausible reason for him playing in the halves is that the club thinks he might have potential there. Injuries happen, as we've already seen with Brown. I'm sure they don't want to move Guth from fullback and Salmon isn't an established half either. And what else are you gonna do with French anyway? Worth a shot and he's still young. 17 I believe.

I believe that French would be 2017 French more than 2018 French in the current side, if there was need to call on him.

Small players with his skillset often fare the worst in a well beaten squad

Luke Burt was a perfect example.

Sure but a large part of the reason that the current side is going well is because the blokes in his positions are doing the stuff he couldn't or wouldn't do.

He did it ok in a 2017 side that was going forward, though.

He's never going to be Blake Ferguson with his carries, but he's a lot better than he showed in 2018 for a few reasons. Guys his size work off others, and there was no one to work off in 2018 even if he had been as fit and confident as he was in 2017.

If he's not happy to stay as a second-string fullback/utility you'd probably let him go, but almost all of the vitriol that's been aimed at the kid by others in the last 12 months-ish is very unfair.

I reckon most of the “vitriol” is based on the fact that we’re assuming he is taking up far more of the salary cap than a back up fullback should. I think it’s a fair assumption as well.

Well if that's a justification for (some) folks literally wishing injury on him last year then I think that's reasonably shit

Really? I don’t remember that. I don’t want him at the club unless he’s on 100-150k but I don’t wish harm on the merkin. I hope the Cowboys grab him and he plays 1st grade for them.

Yeah I remember calling it out at the time. NFI who said it, probably total numpties to be fair. Still. that's more what I meant by vitriol. Not really called for.

The kid can certainly play, when he's fit, in form, and in a good side.

Yeah fair enough too. I think there are plenty of players in NSW Cup that would perform pretty well in the NRL if they were fit, in form and in a good side. However, genuine 1st graders don’t need that perfect storm to be able to play consistently at the top level.

I wouldn't be that fussed to lose him, as I've said.

I do think there are players in most top 17s who fit the same bill in some way though. Whether that's something we want to carry, and whether that's a role he's willing to play, all that remains to be seen really.

As hiney said, Luke Burt made a fair career out of it. Although to be fair he had more ball skills than French and was a gun goal kicker, which helped keep him in firsts.

French is in the spine though and that’s not what you want to be relying on for such an important position.

Last week Bevan was a class above anyone on field imo.
In 2016 he was a class above everyone in the NRL.

He is worth persisting with - he obviously has talent -; the question is where does he play?

Moses and Brown are our halves, and deservedly so.

He's hot going to displace the King at 1; Sivo and Ferguson are on fire.

He's not a better centre than Michael Jennings, and he provably does not make a better centre than Taikarangi, either.

He may be best off heading to greener pastures...

Bench option? He isn't good enough in one position to oust anyone currently in the 17 but if there's a few injuries he can cover quite a few positions. Would like to see more of him in the halves before fully forming that opinion.

Quote from 60s guy

In a match where all Wenty players produced good performances, best on the field were French and Stone.

I like this Stone. Reckon he deserves a chance soon.

You talk like you're the only one who can see anything in the kid, but others have "liked this Stone" for about three years.
