This is a very weird forward pack. You could mount a serious argument that there is players in the NRL 17 worse than every single one of those blokes, but do any of these 6 deserve to be playing in the NRL team ahead of them? Is it really just a fact that we've only really genuinely got NSW Cup level forwards this year?

I'll excuse both Hopgood and Williams from the discussion.

One can only assume the forward pecking order - given Ryles' selections last week and this week - is based on off-season training stats and observations, and that Ryles may have started with an absolutely clean slate in terms of who in the contracted ranks gets rewarded with first grade spots.

It's very different to what we've been used to - when guys could get selected based on reputation, past peak performance, lazy expectation etc.

How do we know that Matterson wasn't ruled out last week by the club's medical team and actually pulled out himself?
Matto left the Tigers because madge was training him too hard. And he didn't like playing through injuries.

And its not like Matto has pulled out of a game in the last minute before. It happens 2 or 3 times a season

Ryles saw this first hand last week for the first time the stunt Matto pulls.

If matto is not quite 100% he won't play history has shown that.

I applaud Ryles for the stance this week it may cost us a win in FG but it's setting a standard and foundation moving forward.

Very valid points.

But if you were Matterson - given his injury history - would you risk playing if you weren't at 100%?

It's one thing to push through if you have a small niggle - but a lot of what Matterson is reporting as reasons why he's not playing are mechanical issues (back issues), or concussion-related (he withdrew before a game last year because he was light-headed during the warm-up).

I understand, and respect, that he puts Eels fans offside.

I dare say that he might need to seriously consider retiring - I think he is genuinely suffering from post-concussion syndrome after that act of foul play by Kaufusi, and it has probably contributed to Matterson feeling a little more gun-shy than usual.

Doubt there is much to the Matterson dropping except a reward for Tuivaiti.

Appears Ryles bench is hooker, edge option, 2 middles.

Guymer was our edge bench player last week and Kautoga has taken that spot.

Matterson is probably seen as a middle and no longer an edge option (unless there is a few injuries). He is named at prop in NSW cup, while Lane was name at edge after being injured.

So really it was between Matterson and Tuivaiti (he came in for him last week) for a bench spot. Tuivaiti did enough to stay in the side.

You really beleive after we leaked 50 odd points that we left probably our best defensive middle out for no reason bar giving Sam a run?
Highly doubtfull

Yep, Tuivati doesn't deserve to be dropped (according to Ryles). So Matterson is the odd one out. That's pretty much it. Smith and Doorey did ok. While Kautoga (edge) always appeared to be in the running for a spot, thus Guymer misses out (and he did ok).

While the starters probably are getting a second chance...except Kelma who was very poor and hooked.

Have to agree Matto had the jump on Sam and Doorey for a middle bench spot in round 1 but pulled out through injury. Those 2 didn't deserve to be dropped.

That's simply false. Matto playing edge or middle walks into our 17 if attitudes right. You reckon Doorey and Kautoga have become better players? He is on par with Hopgood id say
