Funny, isn't it. A footballer aspires to be the best his or her country has to offer, and ends up representing the best humanity has to offer. That's the strength I find in the Konami Cup.

OMFG!

Konami Cup XV has kicked off. The biggest installment of the great competition yet. A record 15 teams are competing this time for footballs ultimate prize. Returning as always are Jamaica, Switzerland and Greece. Spain return as the reigning Konami Cup champions, while Nigeria return as the holders of the Benson and Hedges Cup. Argentina and Paraguay represent South America, whilst the Middle East has a strong contingent with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates all set to battle. As well as Switzerland, Greece and Spain, Europe is bolstered by the presence of Denmark, Scotland and Slovakia. Nigeria are joined by South Africa and Tunisia as the African sides competing for glory this time around.

Pre-tournament favourite status this time around falls to Switzerland, Spain, Jamaica and Nigeria, the sides who featured in the last 4 at the previous tournament. Greece for the first time ever drop from this list after a sh*thouse tournament last time.

After the first few rounds Saudi Arabia have shocked all by surging to the top of the table with 3 straight wins. The Son's of the Desert have not only been winning games, they've been winning them quite comphensively. Jamaica, Switzerland and Greece are all well placed. Scotland, and Paraguay have both been solid thus far. At the otherend of the spectrum Nigeria and Spain, the previous tournaments finalists, lie near the bottom of the table, only proped up by the hopeless Slovakians, who are yet to score a goal, and yet to attain their first point.

The most shocking result of the tournament to date was the UAE's stunning 2-0 triumph over Switzerland, a result that brought back memories of South Korea's amazing triumph over Switzerland, 10 Konami Cups ago. The Koreans surged into the playoffs after this result. Can the UAE do the same? The UAE were beaten next up in their big derby with Saudi Arabia. This match was played among peaceful, yet emotional, scenes, with fans of sides crying out for world peace.

There is still a long way to go yet before the playoffs. It's hard to say yet, but I'd be thinking 18 points would be necessary to ensure qualification. Even Slovakia have 11 games left, plenty of time to get back into the mix. Last time, Portugal seemed destined to crash out early, but they then won their final 3 matches to qualify for the finals. Perhaps the Slovakians can draw inspiration from this emotional tale?

tbh, there's an error in that post. Tunisia aren't in the competition, Germany are...and they've already suffered a shock defeat to Iran.

firstly i'd like to pay homage to the konami cup's legion of fans for their patience. i think a fan's website can't be too far away with a forum that might match this very forum.

second, the football is back underway. nine man argentina beat the uae 2-0. south africa shocked jamaica 1-0. switzerland and greece seem to be the pace setters. yeh. can't be bothered adding to this right now. stay tuned friends

Konami Cup XV

Switzerland 15
Greece 14
Saudi Arabia 9
Paraguay 9
Jamaica 8
South Africa 8
Scotland 7
Slovakia 6
Denmark 6
Argentina 5
Iran 5
Spain 5
UAE 4
Germany 3
Nigeria 3

Here's how it stands as we head into another hectic, yet arduous day of KC football. Worth noting it's going to be a 10 team finals series like the 1998 NRL, so everyone is still right in it.

1 Switzerland 30
2 Greece 23
3 Jamaica 20
4 Argentina 18
5 South Africa 18
6 Paraguay 15
7 Slovakia 15
8 Germany 12
9 Denmark 12
10 Iran 12
11 Scotland 11
12 Saudi Arabia 11
13 Spain 9
14 UAE 8
15 Nigeria 7

Most sides have completed 10 or 11 matches. I'm not 100% about this table, but its pretty close.

Switzerland have been unstoppable. No one has come close to matching them yet. Since their shock 2-0 defeat to the UAE they've scored 31 goals, only letting in 2 in 10 matches, winnings all 10. Pretty frustrating watching this tbh. Assmaster and Cole just can't seem to stop raining in the goals.
Greece have been in good touch, and had been keeping in touch with Switzerland until they were undone by South Africa. Still M. Denyer at the moment has been in fantastic goal scoring form. They have a game in hand on the Swiss, but will surely be hard pressed to challenge for the Minor Premiership.
Jamaica were slow out of the blocks but made good progress until they lost to Germany. Have not enjoyed the form of Greece and Switzerland, yet, are still the third best side running. Will need Bobbins Henry to start taking control of he midfield instead of continually hitting the post.
Argentina are in excellent touch. The goals from Gabriel Batistuta have been invaluable, and have lead them to thrilling come from behind wins against Slovakia and Denmark. However, they've failed to challenge the top sides. The inspirational team theme song of Aerosmith's classic I don't want to miss a thing, or whatever its called, seems to have also inspired the side. If Aerosmith continues to fire out the hits, then I'm sure Argentina have got plenty of goals left in them.
South Africa stunned Greece and Jamaica, whilst they got hammered by Switzerland. Being competitive against these sides is always useful. They're achieving this. Surely they've done enough to secure an important top 6 spot with some easier matches still to come.
After losing they're opening 3 games, Slovakia have won 5 of their past 7. Ujlacky has been inspirational in defence, and his skills at the back can only help but stregnthen their playoff claims. Could have been even better but some awful keeping costing them all 3 points against Argentina
Germany have been a real mixed bag. But the 2-0 win over Jamaica looks like a turning point for them. Spurred on my Christain Jancker's goals, they look set to cause havoc among the top sides.
Denmark have been up, down, up and then down some more. Beat Germany 2-1, but the Copenhagen Calamity against Argentina hurt them. Peter Schmeichel has been inspirational in goal, if he can inspire this side, Denmark may make the playoffs yet. Denmark must be praised for not receiving a single booking so deep into the tournament.
Iran have been on the end of masive hidings. They have the worst for and against in the competition, yet have done enough to find themselves in the top 10 for now. Daei has been inspirational. A side who've had no problems creating chances, they've just been let down by the finishing.
Scotland, have only taken 1 point from the last 12, and are sliding fast after finding themselves 7th. Colin Hendry's defending has been as stoic as ever, although some have critisised whether the team is living up to their Braveheart label. Must start winning. FFS
After topping the table after 3 rounds with 3 wins, Saudi Arabia have drawn 2, and lost 5 of their last 7 matches. Its been a horror run, when they had promised so much. Despite the passionate support of the Snake Charmers, affectionately now known as the Charmy Army, they've been unable to arrest this shocking slump. If the Charmy Army can charm up a storm, perhaps it'll lift them to better things. Lets hope so. We love the Charmy Army.
The Konami Cup champions, Spain, have been sh*thouse. If they start scoring goals, they may scrap into the playoffs.
UAE come from behind win over Scotland breifly moved them back into the top 10, but since those heroics from Muhammed the 'human jihad' as the fans refer to him, there has been little to cheer about. more wins are needed from the battles out of dubai, but few expect much to happen here.
After entering the cup as finalists last time, Nigeria have only 1 win in 10. Its more or less a case of win win win win to make the playoffs. Given the poor form of Babangida, I doubt this will happen this time around.

Word, Azkatro. tbh I think it's Greece's time again. Jamaica are due, but I just don't know if they're the force they once were. Watch out for the darkhorses Slovakia.

Sides ranked 7th-10th can't win, surely. I know that they say never give up on sport, but surely its impossible. Darkhorse? Gotta be the Danes, f-ck Slovakia.
