Steve Waugh would have to be there. Averaging 75 is magnificent but it's not the same as an average of 50+ over 17 years.

I hate making comparisons like this.

I wouldn't compare Hussey to Steve Waugh at this stage, but he is certainly a better batsman than Mark Waugh. Probly didn't have the talent and gracefull style M. Waugh did, but he is far more consistent and not prone to the very loose shots Mark Waugh used to get out to.

Neither has watson. who else are you going to put there?

If I had my way i'd have

4. Martyn
5. Hussey
6. Hodge

But out of the candidates availiable I'd take Watson as he can bowl. Plus I am still not sold on Jaques' fielding ability. He does drop a few too many for my liking.

hmmm - thing is for a quite a few years early on Waugh averaged about 30
then he spent a long time averaging 60+ (those are guesses, but probably not far off)

steve waugh when he was dropped had an average of about 37,and he finished with one over 51 so its safe to say he averaged well over 60 in his second go at test cricket. not bad as it still spanned 11 or so yrs.

Not quite. What you have to understand is that a huge proportion of Waugh's matches came after he was dropped.

Hence it 'only' took an average of 55.88 over an extended period of 124 matches to lift his average to 51.06 from the 37.45 which it stood at for the first 44 tests of his career before he was dropped in '91.

Waugh really came into his own on the '93 tour of England and from that period onwards he averaged 58 over the final 10 1/2 years of his career. Not bad.

I thought his 89 tour of England went alright too.

Infact most of his tours of England were pretty sh*t hot.

my bad :D but an average of almost 56 over a decade is still more than handy.

he averaged 126 from memory. averaged about 80 in 93. in 97 he averaged a tick under 40,and in his last series he averaged about 106 so its safe to say he liked playing in england.

He deadset thrived on those pitches. I dare say we may not have lost the ashes had he played the last tour.

Mind you, we probably wouldn't have if Hussey had played either.

Yeah I saw him on the news last night.

Pressure is certainly on him for some runs though.
