Honorable Mentions
#5 - Gus Fring (Breaking Bad)
Originally imagined as a replacement to a villain who had to leave early due to getting a role elsewhere, Gus Fring became the iconic bad guy in Breaking Bad as a seemingly mild-mannered fried chicken franchise owner who just happened to be a murderous sociopath.
#4 - Lex Luthor (Superman)
One of the most iconic villains in comic book history somehow managed to only garner a single voter in proceedings despite having been immortalised by such talented actors as Kevin Spacey, Gene Hackman, Michael Rosenbaum, and now Jesse Eisenberg; it's a bit of a shock to see Superman's most well known villain riding the pine with the other also rans.
#3 - HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey)
The sentient and rampant AI from Stanley Kubrick's legendary science fiction film somehow managed to miss the cut, despite managing to make a single red light seem like one of the most intimidating things in cinematic history.
#2 - Jaws (Jaws)
An entire generation became afraid to get in the water after Stephen Spielberg's adaptation of the popular novel introduced the fearsome great white shark to the world.
Joined by the man who would hunt him (Quint) in missing the list, I guess it's a sign that we're due another horrifying shark flick sometime soon. Preferably more Jaws than Deep Blue Sea.
#1 - Satan (Various)
The original big, bad guy has been immortalized in countless novels, comics, songs, video games, and films - but managed to pick up just the one vote for any of these incarnations.
Whether you picture him as a goat horned demon, Liz Hurley in a tight red dress in Bedazzled, or Gabriel Byrne getting it on with a mother and daughter - the fallen angel with a thirst for souls has inspired so many villains now that he's virtually the unofficial winner of the countdown.
--------------
Obviously, this five will be my own opinion, so feel free to suggest your five surprises from the list of omissions.
