#50 - Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars)
![palpatine.jpg](http://www.theforce.net/kids/coruscant/probe_droid/palpatine.jpg)
The true power behind the Empire, Palpatine ekes his way into the top fifty by the tiniest of margins, being the lowest ranked character to receive more than a single vote.
With his hooded robe, creepy face, and f**king lightning bolts from his fingers - his eventual death at the hands of Darth Vader marked a pretty huge turning point in redeeming the iconic villain.

=#49 - Gollum (Lord of the Rings)
J.R.R Tolkien's most multi-dimensional character didn't garner as many votes as it might have a few years ago, but Gollum/Smeagol is a justified inclusion. A creepy, murderous, sad creature who first redeems himself and then ultimately, tragically falls back into his old habits - Gollum's corruption at the hands of the ring is just about the most tangible evidence of Sauron's evil there is.
Brought to life most recently by Andy Serkis, Gollum perhaps loses votes because in some ways, he's also a hero of the books and films he stars in.
=#49 - Pennywise (It)
Arguably Stephen King's most enduring villain, Tim Curry's interpretation of Pennywise the Clown for the TV mini-series gave rise to an entire generation of coulrophobics.
There's something perverse about the idea of an evil clown - something meant to bring joy instead being murderous. While in the novel he takes many other forms, it's as Pennywise that he is best remembered.
=#47 - Newman (Seinfeld)
From a terrifying villain of obvious evil to one of a more subtle kind, Seinfeld's Newman was the arch-nemesis of Seinfeld who developed quite a following due to his petty, gross, and creepy behaviour.
His role in the show grew as he become a popular side character, and he garnered two votes in this count down.
=#47 - Predator (Predator)
We leap straight back into the more conventional realms of evil with The Predator who terrorised and brutalised Arnold Schwarzenegger and his band of soldiers in the movie of the same name.
While Predator's legacy has been tarnished by the awful AvP movies and a sub-par sequel, word of a reboot may yet bring this iconic alien killing machine back into the forefront.
