#50 - Emperor Palpatine (Star Wars)

palpatine.jpg

The true power behind the Empire, Palpatine ekes his way into the top fifty by the tiniest of margins, being the lowest ranked character to receive more than a single vote.

With his hooded robe, creepy face, and f**king lightning bolts from his fingers - his eventual death at the hands of Darth Vader marked a pretty huge turning point in redeeming the iconic villain.

=#49 - Gollum (Lord of the Rings)

Gollum.PNG

J.R.R Tolkien's most multi-dimensional character didn't garner as many votes as it might have a few years ago, but Gollum/Smeagol is a justified inclusion. A creepy, murderous, sad creature who first redeems himself and then ultimately, tragically falls back into his old habits - Gollum's corruption at the hands of the ring is just about the most tangible evidence of Sauron's evil there is.

Brought to life most recently by Andy Serkis, Gollum perhaps loses votes because in some ways, he's also a hero of the books and films he stars in.

=#49 - Pennywise (It)

pennywise.jpg

Arguably Stephen King's most enduring villain, Tim Curry's interpretation of Pennywise the Clown for the TV mini-series gave rise to an entire generation of coulrophobics.

There's something perverse about the idea of an evil clown - something meant to bring joy instead being murderous. While in the novel he takes many other forms, it's as Pennywise that he is best remembered.

=#47 - Newman (Seinfeld)

Untitled.jpg

From a terrifying villain of obvious evil to one of a more subtle kind, Seinfeld's Newman was the arch-nemesis of Seinfeld who developed quite a following due to his petty, gross, and creepy behaviour.

His role in the show grew as he become a popular side character, and he garnered two votes in this count down.

=#47 - Predator (Predator)

902001-product-thumb.jpg

We leap straight back into the more conventional realms of evil with The Predator who terrorised and brutalised Arnold Schwarzenegger and his band of soldiers in the movie of the same name.

While Predator's legacy has been tarnished by the awful AvP movies and a sub-par sequel, word of a reboot may yet bring this iconic alien killing machine back into the forefront.

Really surprised that the Joker missed out

Edit: Oh so the Joker that missed out was Jacks. Well I just voted for "Joker" thinking we were just voting for characters, not specific versions

I believe you were the only person not to specify, so I just assigned your vote to the majority opinion.

Reading through the list again, god damn Dolores Umbridge was a merkin. I don't think any villain has made me angrier. I mean, i was glad she got gang raped by centaurs. That's pretty bad.

Haha. I voted for Voldemort. I've always thought his whole back-story was fairly interesting and complex. I suppose you'd hope it would be after 7 books.

Decent list of characters to kick us off, much more blatant evil right now.

I voted for Quint.

The quest in Jaws is the story for me. The attacks, the town just create the setting for the quest and Quint sets himself up as Captain Ahab. Jaws is a monster - a monster shark doing what monster sharks might do. Quint is a mercenary, but also has underlying reasons to just want to kill. He also foils the actions of the heroes - The Chief & Hooper - when he smashes the radio and ultimately blows up the motor. Leaving them at the mercy of Jaws and having to take the shark on with no means of assistance or escape. In that perspective, I see him as a villain. Same way Captain Ahab is a villain, not so much Moby Dick.

I also questioned why anyone would put Quint on that list but I can't fault your reasoning. You could throw in his intro in the film as well, decidedly villainesque - ish - whatever. But a likeable villain nonetheless.

Also - more of you need to watch Blue Velvet I think.

Also - who picked the Wicked Witch of the West ? Ian Thorpe wants your phone number.

=#47 - Walter White (Breaking Bad)

th

Perhaps seen by some as more anti-hero than out and out villain, the star of HBO's hugely popular series about a mild-mannered school teacher who becomes a vicious drug kingpin after learning he has terminal cancer, comes in at a relatively low 47.

Bryan Cranston's transformation from pitiable fool to bald headed, cold-blooded Heisenberg was one of the greatest acting feats in television history, and few would argue that - hero status or no - many of his actions were straight out of Villain 101.

=#47 - Dr. Zachary Smith (Lost in Space)

th

I can't ever think of this character without recalling a line from Family Guy that described him as a 'mincing, boy-hungry pedophile'. Really, that just about sums it up for me.

As I am not 65, I never watched this show, but do recall Dr. Smith being a creepy and supercilious old merkin. I never understood why they didn't just kill him and be done with it.

#43 - Mrs. Carmody (The Mist)

mrs-carmody-the-mist.jpg

If you haven't seen this interpretation of Stephen King's short story of the same name, do yourself a favour and check it out. While the movie was marketed on the premise of mysterious monsters lurking in the mist surrounding a grocery store - the real villain of the piece was the religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody.

Marcia Gay Harden's performance is mesmerising, and reminds viewers that you don't need fangs, tentacles, or wings to be a monster - unwavering faith and delusions of grandeur can turn even the most harmless seeming of characters into monsters.

#42 - Alex DeLarge (A Clockwork Orange)

th

Another villain perhaps under-represented as a result of being the 'hero' of his piece, Malcolm McDowell's most renowned performance as the ultra violent Alex is one of cinema's most iconic.

When your hero rapes and murders while singing 'Singing in the Rain', it's a good indicator of what a terrible human being he is - yet viewers do find themselves rooting for the sociopath during the film due to the circumstances he's put through on his road to 'redemption'.

=#41 - Annie Wilkes (Misery)

th

Our third Stephen King villain comes into the list at #41, with Kathy Bates' chilling portrayal of an obsessed fan making up for the fact she looks every bit as kindly as your favourite grandmother.

Showing the dangerous side of obsession and fame, Misery saw a best-selling author put through torturous hell by a fan who could not let go of her favourite character. Whether you flinched at the hobbling scene or her murder of the police officer, or just found her intense madness more scary - it's hard to overlook this very ordinary, very plausible villain.

Yeah, I noticed that too  Two crazy women, a larger than life (but still crazy) guy, an out and out villain in the moral and legal sense, and a mincing, boy hungry pedophile.

HAL9000 & Annie Wilkes are both brilliant villains that I had great difficulty leaving off of my lists.

Kathy Bates is just awesome in Misery. What a f**king crazy bitch she was!

Can't believe two of my more "out there" choices made it to =43rd and =47th.

Mrs Carmody and Zachary Smith. Eight more left!!

For the record, all my choices were from movies, except for Zachary Smith. No comics, video games, book or music villains.

Unless you count Cruella De Vil and Scar as comicbook villians. :-k

 It's working on all of the PCs I've checked from (and my phone). Not sure why it isn't appearing. Maybe your PC knows about your newfound fear of clowns?

=#41 - Frances Underwood (House of Cards)

Frank_Underwood_3.jpg

Much like Walter White from Breaking Bad, Frances Underwood is more villain than hero. His political maneuvering in the well loved Netflix series have resulted in careers being ruined and lives being ended, yet you still find yourself rooting for him as he does whatever it takes to get himself into the White House.

Kevin Spacey does such a fine job of treading the fine line between being evil and being charismatic, making it hard for you to do anything but cheer when he succeeds against 'good'.

#39 - Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes)

2013-08-04-sherlock_moriarty_andrew_scott.jpg

One of the most well known villains in literature, Professor Moriarty was perhaps Sherlock Holmes' most legendary nemesis and, prior to being bullied into extending the series, the man who ended the great detective's life.

In recent years he's been portrayed by the likes of Natalie Dormer (Elementary), Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes films), and Andrew Scott (Sherlock) - there's clearly still plenty of legs in this mad genius.

=#38 - Buffalo Bill (Silence of the Lambs)

500full.jpg

While the real villain of the piece often feels like Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter (played by Ted Levine) is powerfully terrifying as the criminal that Clarice Starling must catch before he murders a US senator's daughter.

Who amongst us doesn't remember the cat and mouse scene in the dark with only brief flashes of light and the fluttering moths to break it up? Chilling shit.

Based on a number of real life serial killers, Buffalo Bill's desire to flay women's flesh and make a 'woman suit' is grim stuff.

=#38 - Tywin Lannister (Game of Thrones)

0716_tywin-lannister_416x416.jpg

The first of three George R.R. Martin characters to make the cut, Charles Dance's intimidating rendition of the House Lannister patriarch was a joy to behold.

While he did a great many evil things, such as engineering the brutal murder of Robb Stark and his family, there was a kind of likability in this fiercely loyal man who would do anything for his family. Even if it was more for stubborn pride than any real affection for his children.

#36 - General Zod (Superman)

94993-82220-general-zod.jpeg

His recent portrayal in Man of Steel was perhaps lamentable, but General Zod manages to finish above the more well known Lex Luthor by virtue of having a far more plausible motivation for his actions and his dislike of Superman.

A villain I am, admittedly, not particularly familiar. What makes him awesome, two people who voted for him?

I thought Annie Wilkes would be top 5 or 10 for sure, such a nightmare character.

Great choice Dr. Smith, I would have put him myself if I'd thought of it.

Zod ? Really ? Worst dressed maybe but not much of a villain.
