Everybody loves a good villain. They make the movie.

Bored and eager to do another count-down, I thought I'd try something a little bit different.

Who are your favourite villains of all time? The medium doesn't matter - TV, film, novel, comic book, or video game are all welcome.

PM me your list of villains ranked from #1 (your favourite) to #15 (your 15th favourite). If you wish to include more than fifteen, you can, but those ranked below 15 will receive only a .5 vote for calculation purposes.

Please also include the name of the movie/book/game the villain is from.

I'll be setting this thread up both here and in the Computer Games forum, but all votes should be PMed to me.

Hard to find 15. I've only got five so far.

Surprised at this. So many good villains out there.

I've had two lists submitted so far (one of sixteen) and several have included a protagonist/anti-hero rather than a traditional villain. Makes for interesting reading.

How broad a scope of villain are we talking?

I'm not going to restrict people. I've had guys who I wouldn't consider to be villains already submitted, including the main character from a very popular recent AMC show.

Shall I explain that or wait Mis?

It's up to you. I do understand your logic in voting for him, and will probably include him in there myself. You're certainly not alone in doing it - as the main character of another crime based cable television show also garnered high points.

My dad couldn't watch the original show in question because as he put it there's no one to feel sympathy for. This made me reassess the main character and certainly as the show progresses and he desensitises it's hard to argue he's an antihero.

Also from the POV of society he would certainly be a villain.

Definition of villain is interesting. I think it depends on perspective and the story being told. For example, I won't include Michael Corleone as I don't consider him a villain in that story or from the perspective the story is told from. But he is a villain in every other sense and I can see why others would include him.

Misanthrope...

Some of mine are animated characters from mainstream movies.

Hope that's OK? Four more villains to go!!

Yeah, I think it's good to give a bit of lee-way. Don't want to get caught up in semantics of anti-hero, villain and other similar descriptors.

Also, I totally forgot about that guy.

A protagonist villain basically, where the main character is a criminal or evil

Not a problem at all. Video game characters, cartoons, comic books... they're all good.

I actually like one of your animated choices. Definitely a good villain.

That's the key to perspective though, isn't it. Unless you subscribe to the notion that there is absolute right and wrong, good and bad, it comes down to perspective.

In LOTR it seems as though there is clear good and evil, right and wrong. Heroes and villains.

If the story was to be told from Sauron's point of view would your opinions change? What about if it were perceived from an Orc's point of view?

In GOT is Jaime Lannister a villain? Certainly does some villainous things. But so does Ned Stark, depending on your point of view.

I also wont include Monsters. So the Alien is out for me, as is Predator and Freddy Kruger.

But I can see why others would include these also.

I see your point, however LOTR is probably one of the most black and white stories there is in that regard. Sauron is essentially evil personified and the Orcs are created solely to do his bidding.

Almost any other story/movie/game, however, I'd agree 100% with what you were saying.

I also wont include Monsters. So the Alien is out for me, as is Predator and Freddy Kruger.

When they're monsters with a distinct personality (the Predator or the Alien) I'm going to include them in my own votes, but I wouldn't include 'Bugs' from Starship Troopers as they're essentially a force of nature with no drives or desires beyond 'body count'.

Or Sauron is a bloke who made some rings to unify the world. Some bastards stole them for their own purposes and then proceeded to spread rumour and innuendo about Sauron and his purposes. Worse still, the main antagonists riled up the inhabitants of middle earth, set them on a mission to attack Sauron and then bailed out to the ships whilst this was all going on. Sauron did his best to communicate with the antagonists, even inventing and distributing communication devices, but no-one wanted to negotiate. It was all just attack, attack, attack.

Having said that, I'd include Sauron if I was inclined as from the perspective we are presented with he is clearly a villain.

Yeah for mine intent has to matter, not just nature or someone from a background where his/her/its actions would not be perceived as evil.

However I think Krueger would count in this case.
