I would be interested to know whether they have used fake numbers to get government grants.... If so that would be fraud....

You can safely assume they follow a pattern of behaviour in putting these figures up to get access to grants and grounds. They would be relying on the ignorance (and wilful blindness) of those reading their submissions.

Whether it is fraud or not I have no idea.

The whole sacred site drama has been a beat up and I don't know how that even became part of the stories.

Seems the issue has been questioned with the council because soccer was going to be forced off the oval due to the false reporting of Junior numbers. It isn't an AFL vs NRL issue. It's a Junior Sport vs Junior Sport thing.

The BigFoody crowd are having a laugh if they think its the NRL or Rugby League driven protest in fear of the invasion of the AFL.

And a councillor protesting AFL kicking soccer off a suburban ground in Leichhardt won't get re-elected?

Dear Member,

Balmain DFC urges members to email Councillors immediately (see suggested email below) to express disappointment that your club will be worse off for weekend sporting fields in 2013 despite the re-activation of Glover Road and Balmain Road fields.

Councillors on Tuesday night from 7pm will consider Council's report (ITEM 15) on the new sporting fields - CLICK HERE

The Executive Committee requests members ask Councillors to demand that Council officers adjust the proposed allocations to reflect the needs of Balmain DFC's resident players and parents.

The report fails to provide Balmain DFC, the largest club with residents who live in the LMC, with any additional Weekend allocations.

Unless Councillors re-consider, Balmain DFC - which has 1,940 members including 1,450 juniors will be forced to turn away children and adult players in 2013.

The report overall delivers new allocations to both smaller codes AFL (Birchgrove Oval) and Baseball (Glover Street). It leaves Balmain DFC will less allocations than 2012 despite the club's additional 210 players this year, and projections of a jump to over 2,300 by 2016.

Balmain Road will be shared between Leichhardt Saints and Apia Tigers each weekend. It is noted Apia received an allocation at Balmain Road despite the report showing Apia did not even lodge an expression of interest for either Glover or Balmain Road fields.

WEEKEND ALLOCATIONS
The report proposes all Balmain DFC allocations at Birchgrove on Saturday are moved to the proposed new 2 fields at Glover Street to accommodate AFL at a ground where soccer was first played in the 1890s.

On Sundays, Balmain DFC is to be allocated 9am to 12.00 (6 hours in total) at Glover Street. There is a possibility of an alternative Sunday afternoon (12.00 to 5pm) but this is not guaranteed and Council will not commit to it.

On that basis, Councillors are asked to approve a Report recommendation that means Balmain DFC LOSES Nine hours from the 2012 ground allocations.

All other allocations at Easton and Cohen are maintained.

Balmain DFC also uses Waterfront Drive at Callan Park, Balmain Secondary College and has been forced to take weekend allocations at Wentworth Park. These fields are not under the jurisdiction of Leichhardt Council.

While Balmain DFC acknowledges the argument in the report that there are benefits in Balmain DFC consolidating to the Glover Street (and Waterfront) fields for equipment storage as sensible, it rejects the failure to provide additional weekend allocations to the club.

EXECUTIVE COMMITEE VIEW
Balmain DFC has received no additional allocations despite the urgent needs of our members and dramatic jump in player and team numbers. Balmain DFC has actually lost 3 hours of field allocation on 2012 based on the report's recommendations.

There is the possibility of another 10 hours IF Baseball agree to share 12-5pm on every second Sunday.

Balmain DFC will request Councillors review the report and commit to ensuring additional Weekend allocation for the club. We are concerned that Council is not acknowledging the needs of our 1,940 members - the reason Balmain DFC uses many Council grounds is because we are a large club whose members live locally.

TRAINING - BIRCHGROVE OVAL
The Council report moves ALL weekday training for our junior and senior teams from Birchgrove to Glover Road to make way for AFL.
The Executive Committee is aware this will anger parents of our hundreds of Juniors who live in Balmain & Rozelle. It means parents will be required to travel across Darling Street & Evans Street during peak hour each week night.

There will be an additional 1,000-plus car movements. Some members have pointed out that some Councillors are lobbying against traffic congestion on the White Bay and Rozelle Towers issues. As such, Councillors should consider the impact on families, and the environment from this training allocation move.

EXECUTIVE COMMITEE VIEW ON OVERALL TRAINING ALLOCATIONS
Overall, it is likely the club can accommodate training needs in 2013 under the overall report recommendations. But on current projections there will be a shortfall in 2014 and beyond.

Consolidating training to Glover rather than at Birchgrove has some benefits. It is noted that there are many members who may find it easier to get to Glover Street field than Birchgrove if they live outside the Balmain Peninsula.

The report also suggests new lighting for Waterfront Drive (no time-frame) as a future benefit and this is supported. But it is noted that this idea is unfunded.

The Executive Committee acknowledges the concerns expressed by many Balmain residents about the proposed move from Birchgrove Oval to Glover Street, and acknowledges the high number of parents and junior players affected. On that basis, we accept Balmain DFC will request Council consider keeping at least 3.30pm to 5.30 training at Birchgrove oval for U6s-U11s.

SUMMARY
Balmain DFC appreciates the argument to provide new allocations to smaller sports like AFL and Baseball. However, it is disappointing that smaller codes by sporting activity choice and resident status are set to secure large Weekend allocations immediately new fields are available. Balmain DFC and other clubs have waited for decades for fields in Callan Park to be re-activated. Our campaign for additional fields for the last decade was not supported by many current Councillors and opposed by the Friends of Callan Park. Two Greens Councillors - Deputy Mayor Michelle McKenzie and Daniel Kogoy - in March voted against funding for the Balmain Road field. Members wil recall Balmain DFC secured immediate State Government support in December 2011 to develop Balmain Road for the 2012 season, but this was opposed by Greens Councillors and Independent John Stamolis.

Balmain DFC's preliminary analysis - to be confirmed - shows both Apia and Leichhardt Saints have received significant new Weekend allocations compared to Balmain DFC.

It is also noted that Balmain DFC will make it clear to Councillors that all 2012 arrangements are maintained for 2013 unless both Glover and Balmain Road are completed to schedule including lighting.

The EC has provided the following suggested email for Members to send to Councillors. It is also important that members attend the Tuesday night Council meeting at 7pm (Leichhardt Town Hall) to show support for the club's position.

While some members attended the critical meeting on Balmain Road in February, your club's goal of providing sporting activities for local residents for 2013 and beyond is now at risk and we need a strong showing at the Council meeting.

Please assist your Executive Committee on this important matter.

Yours sincerely,

Brian Frankham, Balmain DFC President on behalf of the Executive Committee.

COUNCILLOR EMAILS

SUGGESTED EMAIL

Dear Councillor,

I note the LMC report in response to the EIO process for the Glover and Balmain Road fields.

It is very disappointing that Balmain DFC has not received additional Weekend Oval allocations despite the number of LMC resident members of the club.

And this means the needs of our 1,450 junior players . Balmain DFC will on the current tabled proposal be worse off than in 2012.are not met.

Balmain DFC will be forced to turn away local resident players in 2013 and future years unless Councillors show support for their local residents and increase the allocation to Balmain DFC for weekend games.

Our club is the fastest growing club in the LMC. It should receive ground allocations that reflect the number of residents involved in playing football, and not be penalised for being a large local community based club. Balmain DFC needs at least additional allocations on alternative Sundays at Glover Street.

In addition, the proposed move of Balmain DFC from Birchgrove Oval to Glover Street raises a significant issue. It means over 500 children will need to switch ovals for week night training.

This will add to traffic congestion. An expected 1,000-plus extra cars across local roads each week. This contradicts the current position of many Councillors on local road congestion.

Please review the LMC report and take into account the needs of your local residents. I would recommend that your consider deferring a final decision until the July Council meeting to allow additional time ton consider all options. And Councillors should conduct a post code audit of each sporting code's local resident player base as a major factor in their deliberations.

I urge all Councillors to support additional Weekend allocations for Balmain DFC.

Yours sincerely

Anyone who has spent any time living in that areas knows its a Soccer dominated part of Sydney. The idea that the greater proportion of Juniors would be playing AFL was laughable to begin with.

it's not a first time they've been caught fudging figures http://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary...=rrat_ctte/afl_tasmania/report/c02.htm#c02f46

2.52 In what becomes somewhat of a circular argument, the AFL stated that a Western Sydney AFL team is necessary to consolidate grassroots efforts in a growing market:

We looked at the absolute size of the Western Sydney market and the need for the AFL to have a presence in a market that has the second strongest growing LGA in Australia. Blacktown and Baulkham Hills have significant support from migrant groups ... We are very aware of our challenges in growing that market, and ultimately we need an AFL franchise to continue the work we are doing at the base. The participation in the greater west of Sydney was of the order of 20,000 participants in 2008. We continue to invest in that region and are building a base to be a team at the top.[46]

the real number
Information on the public record, attributed to the New South Wales Minister for Sport suggests that actual participation in Western Sydney is fewer than 3,000.[47]

oops

only out by more than 17,000

Some of these Councillors certainly know how to sign a death warrant.
The people of Leichardt and surrounds will not let this one die because they know the AFL has the money and can bring many benefits to a local area.
The kids that do play AFL in that city have parents with deep pockets and influence and there is no way known they will cop their sport being treated as a 2nd rate citizen in any part of Australia.
You kick footy in the guts and it's like burning the Aussie flag.

The ACT4GWS campaign for public funding in Canberra was probably bordering on fraud or corruption. I've tried to get official information from the ACT Sports Minister Andrew Barr on negotiations between him and the AFL and been blocked (and this is public money being divied out here) - the documents are said to be confidential and can not be released publically. It would require a FOI request which costs to even attempt to see what went on between him and the AFL.

I strongly suspect that fake numbers were used in Queensland to garner support for the stadium built up there also.

Speak to the ACT Ombudsman if you want to pursue this. I used to have a lot to do with FOI in a past life. I would be surprised that such a request would cost much if anything.

The laws about FOI have changed dramatically and there are very few exemptions from release these days.

was interesting how the AFL used Ian Macdonald to reverse the decision made by Nathan Rees
AFL's NSW bid in disarray

April 29, 2009 08:03am

THE AFL's plans for a second team in Sydney are in tatters -- raising hopes for a Tasmanian team in the competition.

It has emerged that the New South Wales Government has withdrawn financial backing for the code's expansion.

The NSW Government has informed the AFL it will not help fund the $100 million re-development of the Sydney Showground at Homebush, where a second AFL side was set to be based from 2012.

News Ltd can reveal NSW Premier Nathan Rees met with AFL boss Andrew Demetriou three weeks ago to inform him of the decision.

With NSW in a parlous financial state, it is understood the Government decided pumping big money into the AFL's expansion -- right in the heartland of rugby league -- would risk a voter backlash.

Forced to abandon their ambitious Homebush project, the AFL may now be forced to spend at least $33 million to set up the showground as a no-frills home ground -- something AFL officials and key stakeholders are not prepared to do

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...government-favours-for-afl-20100523-w40j.html

Ian MacDonald and AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, saying they have jointly convinced Premier Kristina Keneally of the showground investment. They understand Ken Edwards, the former chief executive of ANZ Stadium, Sydney Olympic Park, has been advising MacDonald.

and MacDonald has since been axed by the Labor party http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/labor-axes-trio-in-bid-to-rebuild-20120712-21yyw.html

Labor axes trio in bid to rebuild

Date
July 13, 2012

NSW LABOR has suspended three of its most controversial members in an attempt to distance the party from the scandals that engulfed the former state government as it tries to rebuild after last year's election loss.

The party's disputes committee last night suspended the former senior vice-president of NSW Labor and general secretary of the Health Services Union East branch, Michael Williamson, the former NSW energy minister, Ian Macdonald, and the former Drummoyne MP, Angela D'Amore.

Each is either under investigation by authorities or has been the subject of adverse findings. They had been charged by party officers with ''conduct contrary to the principles of the party''.

The Left assistant secretary of NSW Labor, John Graham, confirmed the suspensions, which he said were necessary for the credibility of the party's reform efforts.

''As we rebuild there can be no question in the public mind about Labor's integrity. We are taking these issues very seriously''.

Mr Williamson, who is also a former national Labor president, is being investigated by police over allegations he received secret commissions from suppliers to the union, which he denies.

Mr Macdonald, who resigned from Parliament in 2010 over an expenses scandal, is being investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

He is accused of accepting the services of a prostitute in return for arranging meetings between energy company bosses and the accused murderer Ron Medich and his then associate, Lucky Gattellari, to further their business interests.

At the request of the NSW Parliament ICAC is also investigating the awarding in 2008 of a mining exploration licence by Mr Macdonald to a company, Doyles Creek Mining, chaired by a former union boss, John Maitland.

It followed an independent report which found there was ''a circumstantial case of wrongdoing and breach of public trust''.

In 2010 Ms D'Amore was found by ICAC to have acted corruptly by rorting $4500 in staff entitlements. She failed to have the finding overturned in the Supreme Court but is understood to be considering other legal avenues.

Mr Macdonald's suspension was initiated last December after his ICAC appearance, but finalised last night. While each had the opportunity to argue their case before the committee at NSW Labor's headquarters in Sussex Street, it is understood only Ms D'Amore chose to do so, via a written submission.

The scandals involving Mr Macdonald and Ms D'Amore were seen as significant factors in further eroding public confidence in the Labor government before last year's historic election defeat.

The suspensions are the first step towards possible expulsion from Labor for the trio, but the view within the party is that option should only be pursued if they are charged and convicted.

The decision comes on the eve of this weekend's NSW Labor conference during which the issue of party reform will be debated.

The Opposition Leader, John Robertson, will call for the formation of a panel to examine options for the direct election of the parliamentary leader by members.

The measure, which would transfer the power to elect the leader from the caucus to rank and file members, is being pushed by the Left in a bid to end the ''revolving door'' culture that led to the demise of the former premiers Morris Iemma and Nathan Rees.

Labor recently trialled community preselections to choose its candidate for the City of Sydney election in September and has committed to using the process in five winnable seats at the 2015 state election.
