A few facts to consider.

As of now there is no telecast of French domestic competition matches in France

and that's the point at which any hope of this idea ever had in the first place should have been extinguished (no offence intended to anyone).

Albert says Toulouse televise all their games, this gives us some hope, one game a week would be awesome. Then all the other clubs will likely start to organise some sort of broadcast as a result. and while we're at it, Albert, why have the French RL not negotiated some sort of a TV deal? It's an absolute must for any decent competition, and i'm surprised they haven't considering how crucial these next few years are for French RL.

Toulouse have all their home games televised, but not all their games, by local Toulouse television. That is a local channel only seen in the Toulouse metropolitan area. And they only have one camera, parked in the stand near half way. So it is not a very great production, in fact it is a poor production --- with the view being partly obscured at times by the support columns of the stand --- and it would not meet Australian standards. So the only chance for French broadcasts being relayed (by post) to Australia would be if Sports + did it with their multiple cameras.

I think the answer to your question is that the commercial TV companies are only interested in telecasting professional sports, not semi-professional, except for the finals. French rugby league only got a proper TV deal when Les Catalans became part of the fully professional Super League.

However in earlier times, before Sports Plus, its precursor Pathe Sport would televise one game a week of the French domestic semi-pro competition on its cable outlet. I don't know much about that because I never saw it. Pathe Sport was eventually sold to Canal Plus and became the specialised unit Sports Plus. Sports Plus channel is part of the same corporation, but different from the channel Canal Plus Sports. If you are ever in France you will see them in the TV guide, and in most decent hotels.

Here is a report about the acquisition of Pathe Sport by CanalPlus from 2002, when it took place:

SportsPlus launches in France
By Sotires Eleftheriou

French media giant Vivendi Universal's TV subsidiary CanalPlus is to launch a new sports channel, SportsPlus, on October 26. It will be available on the basic package of the Canal Satellite platform and via, "all the cable networks that ask for it," said Xavier Couture.

The channel will be available to over two million households at launch. It replaces the existing Pathe Sports which Canal acquired earlier this year and is in fact the result of merging the sports team of Canal Plus and Pathe Sports (see Advanced Television archive). Couture pointed out that this is the first channel to have a 'Plus' in its name since the launch of CanalPlus itself in 1984, and that the channel really is a little sister to the main channel.

The annual budget of the channel is E34.5 million and it has a staff of 120, who will supply sports material to both Canal Plus and to Sports Plus. Michel Denisot, head of sports at CanalPlus and head of the new channel, emphasised that the new channel will in no way take away from the sports content on CanalPlus which will continue its sports coverage exactly as at present. SportsPlus will cover only live sport and on exclusive basis, "We will never show the same match as any other channel," said Denisot.

The line up of sports channels on Canal Satellite now comprises Eurosport France, Equipe TV (sports news), ESPN Classic, Equidia (horse racing and betting) as well as Pathe Sports which is to be replaced by SportsPlus. There are also some channels with extensive sports coverage, such as Motors TV, occasional channels such as OMTV (the channel of the Marseille football team) and extensive sports coverage on PPV.

Your better off creating a petition that demands New Zealand having a state of origin series to combat Kiwis playing for Australia.

Have they ever been shown on Fox?

Anyway, I thought that you wanted some rugby league to watch during the Australian off season. The Challenge Cup is on during the Australian rugby league season. Only the French domestic competition is played during Australia's cricket season, to fill the boredom gap. However if that French domestic competition were ever televised and contracted, it would have to run well into the regular professional rugby league seasons, because the French competition finals are now held at the beginning of (knockout Cup) and end of (Championship) May.

But as I pointed out before, apart from the technical problems of getting it professionally telecast, the standard of play of the French domestic competition is at best only at the UK's National League 1 standard, and then only for the top four or five clubs.

I have absolutely no doubt, that the French comp, if televised properly would rate decently (compared to many sports currently on foxtel including some of the low profile union games and many others). I think a magazine style (1hr format with wrap ups covering highlights from France and Russia would be brilliant). The low standard means nothing. Cth Bank Football rated decently for years on Free to air and it was a low standard. The Qld Cup when promoted gets sensational ratings for the big games and good ratings at any time. Some of the low standard Mid week cup games that used to be played always got good ratings. But, Unfortunately, Foxtel doesnt need ratings, it needs subscribers and the NRL already gets all the subscribers and it would not bring in any new subscribers. IMO, this is why we rarely see UK league on Foxtel.

There is little to no chance that Fox would actually pay for the production of the games, however I think Sports + in France would not be too far away from televising a match a week. WIth the Catalans in the super league, there is a little more pressure on them to televise rugby league as well as a free to air channel to televise it again, so if Sports+ lost some Catalans matchs to France 2 for example, then they may be tempted to increase their own league content. If so, it would come down to what is better for their channel, to pay for the rights to an NRL match or another SUper League match, or to produce a French Elite match of the round. With the frenchs' love of everything french, there is more than good possibility they would opt for their own.

If there was some support coming from Aus, Eng, or EuroSports that would pay even a nominal amount, it could be enough to persuade Sports+ to go ahead with it. The regular SL and Catalan matchs have already started making a difference, at least now, when I talk with a union bloke over here, he has some idea of league and if he has seen some of the matchs, he will usually have an appreciation of it. I started playing union this year (a long story) and I was surprised that one of my first conversations was about the Tri Nations final and what an incredible game it was. I would like to know what the ratings are for Catalans matchs and the Trinations (which are not generally given good time slots).

For Aus viewers, it would be worth watching a few French games because they play a different style to Aus. Aus are better athletes and this comes across in the style of play in aus. IN france, its a little bit more like the old days. Also, because union is so strong over here, it influences a little bit, the game of league just as league influeces union in aus. It makes for a different game, not necessarily better or worse, but a different game to watch.

Rugby League does not exist in the french media coverage, until now the french federaton has to pay if they want to be broadcast.

A better petition will be to ask the NRL to give a free royalty acces for a french tv channel to the NRL competition.

Here, in France we can see NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB and we can't see the greatest championship of the greatest game of all, it's a shame.:x

If you want to see some french game like That this is on http://www.planete13.tv/

Thanks for that, do you have to sign up, or is it like NRL.com?
So far it's in free access, it's not made in a professionnal way but by an "amateur", so some time it's not updated but that has the merit to exist .
