Not looking at membership or dollars but the club has expressed their reluctance to tell the media anything because they will twist the story. Wouldnt SM be the perfect platform to tell their stories personally & bypass the media all altogether?

Not to mention the fact that email open rates are probably around the 20-30% mark, I guarantee that link to the letter on the sharks fb page was more successful than the email.

This social media platform tells lots of stories, and feeds the mainstream media. But this one is preaching to the converted.

I'd say other social media tools will have a trickle down effect financially, but the basis for more $$s will always be a well performing team, or at least a team that carries reasonable expectations of winning. The social media will be useful to reinforce that message, once the team starts producing some good news stories on the field.

so no $ value. Add to that , they are more than likely, to be preaching to the converted away.
So a figure of effectiveness or conversion, is probably in the low percentile.

SM is 95% lies, selfies, promotions for junk, pictures of cats & a playground for trolls.

Television is king because it gets to 100% of the audience. It is then repeated via media/social media.
I don't consider a web site social media. it is the business hub & can be measured in dollars & effectiveness.

Lucky most sporting brands and clubs worldwide don't share that opinion. The current generation live on social media. Its not going anywhere, its only going to get bigger and more influential. Digital advertising is the future. The club use it now but in a pathetic half arsed way. They should improve it once the cash starts rolling in purely to up the professionalism of the joint.

I will tell you right now it is this simple.
Paul Gallen will reach more peole, via ten minutes on teh Footy show, then ten years of social media will ever reach.
The sporting clubs are not doing it becasue they want to. They are doing it because everybody else is doing it.
I couldnt give 2 flying phucjjkkss if the club is doing half arsed or 1/4 arsed.
As long as they arent spending a cent on it.

Full dinosaur approach. It is the future of marketing. Do it right and reap the benefits in the future.

Can anyone explain to me how a sharks Facebook page will make any money?

I am assuming the only people who would join are fans and freaks who want another thing to join.

Possibly the smartest thing you've ever posted.

The social media as an effective marketing tool thing has been done to death.
There is far too much "noise" on the plethora of platforms the gain any sort of lasting traction.

Gen Y may love it at the moment, but the generation behind them think it is a gross waste of time.

I give it 5-10 years max.

Directly it might not make any money, maybe extra ecommerce sales through an online store. But it engages fans, gives them a voice, access to players, access to the ceo, etc. We do it properly and the numbers rise and then we can offer our sponsors interaction through the page (if they are active on social media having access to 50k+ accounts is gold).

This can be done so easily, it only takes one switched on person to run all the clubs social media. The club has a captive audience that businesses dream of. Utilise it.

I knew a bloke from school. Nice enough sort of dude.
Bumped into him up the pub.

Next week or so he "friended " me on facebook.
so ( against my best judgement ) I did it.

24 hrs later I had to piss him off.
He turned my facebook account into his own f**king advertising page for his real estate business.
video's of him at auctions and open houses etc etc.

I only joined the thing for a school reunion and to check comp dates for a few clubs I'm in.

It is just utter shit on there for the most part.

I work in Marketing, and Social Media is fine at keeping top of mind with whoever your target is and interaction.

Imo the rule is simple, a like doesn't not equal a dollar, almost ever.

Should they beef up their social media activity and make it more polished? sure.
Should they do it at cost? minimal
Will it help with growing revenue and gaining sponsors? No, very unlikely.

If they want to properly grow revenue and gain sponsorship, they need to look like an attractive brand, that's what they need to focus on.

Get some good PR, do some top line advertising, CTA the general public.

SM can help support the message but that's it.

I would say hiring a person to look after this is a minimal outlay.
