Lifetime armchair league fan chooses to play rugby

I've been a league fan since I was 5 years old. Until last year I held union in utter contempt.

But upon deciding to have a go and play some contact sport for the first time in my life I chose Rugby Union over League.

And i have to tell you the blokes have been great and supported my lack of knowledge and ability :( with nothing but encouragement.

I'd like to start a discussion about the pros and cons of playing either sport at the grassroots level.

I was warned off playing Brisbane 2nd Division Rugby League by many knowledgeable people who I'm sure had my best interests at heart.

Tell me your experiences.

You're not a person who wanats to test himself to the limits of his ability, that's my view on this.

I played RU all my youth and loved it, before seeing RL on the telly. I had to play it as it was all about running, passing and tackling, tackling, tackling.

When I did play it I found that I had to test myself physically in ways I could only dream of when playing RU.

The two sports are chalk and cheese in terms of toughness and skill required to play.

RU's for blokes who just fancy a run, like yourself, RL's for chaps who want to test themeselves.

I played RL all my life as did my father and I came from a RL family. I played a little bit of RU through school. Work commitments meant that I had to give up at around 19. Around 6 years later I was able to play again and went to a few RL practice sessions - it was hard- especially not having played for the last 6 years or so. To cut along story short I ended up taking the easy route and played RU for 2 years. I will admikt that I really enjoyed it even though I initially copped an earful from my father. It is a good sport to play and I agree with Screnny's comments 100%.

I've played more league than rugby, but I guess comes down to what position you play & at what level. I was always a winger & the good thing about playing league over union was that I touched the ball more than 4 times a game. I also found the tackling tougher in league.
If anyone wants to take up a truely tough sport that will take you to the limit, try boxing. It should be available to every school kid IMO. A great character builder.

Stewbum, you've seen the light - not that rugby is better than league, but they are both enjoyable sports!

Generally speaking I think RL requires more fitness but I wouldn't agree that it is tougher.

Blues would agree with that after having 4-5 players subbed off becuase of injuries.

Carlos Spencer showed everyone that he is not a twinkie - he had a broken jaw and was abosulty pissed when he had to go off...

Like someone said, its about what postion you play. For example centres (like me) get much more ball time in Union then centre at League

The thing I find is that union has levels you can play at a fairly social level and league (tackle version) doesn't really provide that

Unlike that Pussy Son-of-bitch Merths, even Eric, his largest fan thinks hes past it...

what a f**kin joke, Instead of tackling people, it looks like hes trying to slap them

I would be happy if you played either.
Rugby - either code - is not for the faint hearted, if it is all to physical take up soccer. ;-)

At the junior level, whilst they are different, generally the same skills sets are required. Running, tackiling, kicking and passing.

As long as your putting down the play station console and doing something active outside - it is all good.

I reckon its handy to play to both codes...

League greatly improved my passing and my tackling

ive been playing both codes for the past 8yrs and i found that league helped my tackling tremendously and union helped with my passing and kicking skills. yet i would rather watch a game of union on the telly but play a game of league

Ive played union and cant take the stop start nature of the game. Playing on the wings and centres, i rarely saw the ball

No thanks

Cheers,
